Anycubic reached out to me a couple of weeks ago and asked me to check out the Anycubic Photon S. I have to say that I was highly impressed by the performance and ease of use of this machine. I was able to take a really busted 40k Ork army and do some serious work to rescue it! I hope you guys enjoyed seeing this army come together as much as I did saving it. I am going to be painting it soon so I hope you'll stick around and check that out!
A HUGE thanks to Anycubic for sponsoring this video, this rescue would not have been possible without your support!

I love that so many people are becoming more aware of how powerful and useful a 3D printer can be for the hobby. Even GW has been CAD designing their sculpts and 3D printing their masters. eBay Miniature Rescues In terms of speed I would agree. That said there’s a world of difference between painting something sculpted by someone who actually paints minis vs. something sculpted or designed by someone who does not. Sometimes you can really tell when a mini was simply not designed to be painted easily.

I got my 3d printer a few months ago. A buddy of mine was wanting to get into 40k, but he was broke. I was able to 3d print 2300 points of orks for him offa the thingiverse (some pieces straight off the site but most kitbashed). He's playing the warband of tuska daemonkilla so his orks have this khorne taint look to them. I put mechadread torsos on 6-legged defiler chassis, used scaled down brass scorpion claws as power claws on guys, tuska has the blood prince's testicles mounted on a banner post on his back, one of the big meks is half ork and half a very small defiler, i converted age of sigmar chaos chariots into war trukks.....replaced the horses with bikes (also mounted those same turret grots you used...that model is rad). I found various grot/goblin/snotling/gremlin/etc models to kitbash in for decoration including a little goblin chugging a bottle of booze (my buddy is quite fond of the drink...thought it fitting). I found a bunch of ork arms that are giving rude gestures and pointing etc, so one of his nobz is very obviously flipping the bird to someone. Some of the models have khorne axes. Result was a very custom army that unmistakenly tells a story of a group of orks that have been hanging out in the warp. Not a single piece of GW plastic. Nothings painted yet, but when i get some of it painted, i'll gladly show some of the pieces off.

I've seen a lot of gatekeeping and hostility from the Warhammer community regarding 3D printing before. Super glad to see someone who feels this way about it, as well as all the positive comments. 3D printers are not a cheap and lazy way to get minis, especially if you're modeling stuff yourself. They're a tool, just like paintbrushes or clippers. I just upgraded to a resin printer from FDM and I still haven't had a chance to print anything yet, but I'm itching to print some models I've made that my old printer just couldn't handle.
@beyond_hope
@beyond_hope 3 жыл бұрын
I think the hostility isn't against 3D printing generally but how it's used. Printing bits, such as @ebay Miniature Rescues has done, would be accepted as it's no different to buying a resin piece for a conversion from a retailer such as Kromlech. From the reactions I've seen, It's more likely that the community is more vocal against those who print whole models or minis which are almost copies of GW pieces.
@fishnoggin5319
@fishnoggin5319 3 жыл бұрын
@@beyond_hope Precisely. And I'd like to think the people I have been exposed to were the vocal minority in that regard. I would pin a lot of the blame on people who did make low-quality proxies with their printers as well. I remember specifically an article about someone making some eye-bleeding green unpainted Caladiuses on cardboard bases, and winning a tournament with them. This was also what most people pointed me back to when voicing their objections to 3D printing. It was poor etiquette on his part and a lot of people tied that to the 3D printing itself, rather than the lack of paint and bases. A Spikey Bits article said "this player went with a 3D printed route that took 0% hobby effort," and while he may not have put the effort in himself, a lot of care went into designing those models at some point. Arguably much more than just going to a store and shelling out for some GW plastic. (ABSOLUTELY still support GW and your FLGS though.) I write all just so you know where I'm coming from when I say that I appreciate the opinions of you and other people here. I've been excited about the applications of 3D printing since I read a PopSci article when I was 12, and seeing other people get as excited as me about it instead of calling me a cheat is, well... exciting. Casey is setting a great example on how to 3D print Warhammer stuff in a way that helps the hobby instead of hurting it, and I can't wait to see how all this goes.

Just being able to print a single part is so invaluable for me. I think printing models is great and all, but I already have a ton of models I will probably never get to, so it makes perfect sense to use it as a bits machine. :) The regular photon is like $150 these days. The entry point into 3D printing is getting lower and lower. I imagine that over the next few years they will be even better, and the prices will be too good not to get one.

At first I was a bit skeptical about 3D printers and did not want anything to do with them, as I had heard that they're really slow to print, super expensive and the quality of the prints wasn't that good to be honest. But over this spring and summer what I've seen people do with them and the current price range for quality printers (Thanks, Goobertown Hobbies! ), it seems that 3D printers have come a long way from their early days! The only thing that keeps me buying one of them is the possible smell from the resin. I don't have a good workplace for hobby stuff that can be ventilated easily, so I still have to wait a bit before getting a printer of my own.

I recommend that you unplug the small filter fans from the board, they are a design flaw and with disabling them your room smells a lot less of resin. Also i recommend using elegoo abs-like rapid, i use it for minis, it gives them more flexibility and they are more durable, also it smells less than anycubic resin.

@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 3 жыл бұрын
Actually the going rate for tournaments is that the model has to be 80% of the original. I think for orks that’s stretched a little bit because some of the models don’t actually exist as a kit, like the big Mek on bike that I built for the video. But generally it’s that 80%. The only thing I would argue as not being possibly allowed would be the trukk, mostly because the driver and gunner are printed, if they were original GW plastic, I would say that the trukk could have as many 3d bits on it as I wanted and it would still be fine.

Your models will look cooler than everyone else’s. Introducing technology that is important to humanities future into the lives of loved ones. The bigger pieces feel real sturdy. The blades on the Deff Koptas are a little fragile, but after I made a couple I tried another one a little thicker and it feels much better. I've been told that it depends on the resin you use too, some of the stuff is brittle, while other stuff has a bend to it more like the plastic we are used to using.

Just curious, would you be willing to let me know how long it took to get yours set up (calibrated, testing, etc) and how much resin it took ( in terms of bottles 1, 1/2, etc) before you felt confident that you knew you had it down? I know this might be different per person , just trying gauge potential time investment before jumping in. Thanks for your videos, you've been a big inspiration to me since I jumped into the hobby.

The printer comes ready assembled and the only calibration needed for a basic print is to ensure the buildplate is flat against the LCD screen in the base. This takes 5 minutes and the instructions are in the manual that comes with the printer. As for confidence levels, that is more of a personal judgment. The printer is pretty user friendly. You need to use an additional program called a slicer to prepare your model (STL file) for printing and this is what will take the time to master as there are a lot of variables you can change to improve your prints. But there are a lot of KZfaq channels covering resin printing and slicing to get you the best results fast.

Been looking into getting a resin printer recently. This is looking like a good one to get. And affordable-ish. Around the $250 Aud or $500 for a larger version.. Did you use anything to the bits after printing? Did they require any other prep work before you used them? Payday next week........🤔

I cleaned them with isopropyl alcohol and cured them on a window sil. They make curing stations, and there are UV lights you can get for pretty cheap to cure the models. There's also a code and link in the description of this video for $30 off of this printer if you're looking into getting one soon.

The regular photon is a bit smaller than this one, but the quality is supposed to be the same. I can't imagine it would be a disappointment. That being said, Anycubic just gave me a $30 off code that i put in the description if you're interested. There are some seriously sweet minis out there to print. I've already signed up for a patreon 3D print company and I'm pretty happy with it :)

I have a Photon and have been fixing up an Ultramarines force from different sources. I have a question. Where do you draw the line on how much a model can be made up from resin? I imagine 100% printed is not cool, but do you think you should still have the torso? What if you just have some arms and find the file for a torso? What if you have a full fig, rip the arms off it, print pieces to make each arm and torso it's own figure? Where is the line? These are the questions that keeps me up at night.
@CrimsonTusk

There is no line, technically. I think G-Dubs implement 80% GW components vs "other" components for tournaments... But that's about it.

It really depends on the resin you’re using. Some of them have stronger odors than others. Honestly I haven’t found it to be too bad. There’s a little bit of a smell, but it’s not making the whole place smell either.

So casey, you can print ANYTHING almost? I have a predator tank I got for cheap at a yard sale, it's only distinctive feature was the side sponsons. It's missing the turret, side guns, and hatches + a proper paint job. The side sponsons are magnetic, which I found to be unique. I was wondering if you could rescue this poor machine, featuring your new printer for a video maybe? I don't want to keep my hopes up because I don't have a ton of money. How much would a restoration + a paint job of my choice cost USD? My custom chapter needs some armoured support and I don't want this tank under anyone elses boots either...

I've watched a ton of videos about 3D printing for miniatures but I feel one important info is always missing: How much leverage can you expect out of one resin "bottle"? (I assume all are in the 0.5L range...). I mean, you have to fill the tray up to a certain point and as far as I know you can't just reuse the excess, so, assuming a regular GW size miniature, how many can one fit in the usable printing space and how many times can one fill the tray with one bottle? I'd really like to know to see how viable it is for the average mini painter. EDIT: P.s. if it wasn't clear, thanks for the video, I really liked it :D
@beyond_hope
@beyond_hope 3 жыл бұрын
Resin is available in 500ml and 1l bottles. Resin isn't wasted after a print, you can carry on printing after the last and just refill as needed on top of existing resin. I've had prints that have almost used all the resin I put in the vat and have simply poured more in during the print to ensure a complete mini. As for how many you can print on the buildplate, it really depends on the model(s) you're printing and how you align them on the buildplate. So far, the maximum I've been able to put on is 12-15 standard 28mm minis on my plate and still printed successfully (without refilling the vat). That was around 60g of resin. So for a 500ml bottle, I could reprint that plate 8 or 9 times. Again, how far the resin goes depends on model size, mass, whether it's a hollow model and additional variables such as supporting material.
