What became the longest women's semi-final in grand slam history, Serena and Elena gave us a match for the ages. Brutal rallies, brilliant ballstriking by both players, this match was truly out of this world!! Serena even made a huge comeback from match point down!
The Best WTA Match for me!

Serena's serve is just a work of art and it saved her SO many times in her career. I remember watching this match live - It was so good that I ended up being 10 minutes late to my summer class! It was a true grand slam moment. You could hear a pin drop in the audience because the tension was so high.

Still amazes me how Serena pulled this off. She was off balance, out of sort and was playing defence this whole match and Demienteva was playing arguably her best match in her career.

This is how close serena was of loosing this match 5:40. I remember while I was watching this match live, I thought it was long and then the electricity went off in my home. So I was not able to see the hawk eye decision. I continued to sit on the same spot with the same posture for around an hour and was praying for serena. Then the electricity came back and I heard commentators of star sports saying that serena played 60 to 70 percent of her ability in this match and still won. That's when I knew the Queen has won that match. Those were the days!

Well done Tennis TopShots👍 A great match! It's been on my DVR for years. Serena showed her true greatness, Dementieva (who played a great match) Threw EVERYTHING at Serena,and it still wasn't enough. I want to give you all an example of what Great commentary is, I have the ESPN version of this match called by Mary Jo Fernandez and Cliff Drysdale as this dramatic match went on into the 3rd MJF said- "Dementieva must be thinking how much better do I have to play to win this match?(Her words give Serena the absolute credit,she doesn't often get, though deserved for withstanding someone playing an A level game but still losing)CD would repeat what MJF said after that,that is the only example I've heard,of a commentator being truthfully observant during a match and accurate in regards to what they are seeing,this match is a prime example of what Serena has said and what fans of SW have known is 100% true the vast majority of these woman Are Not intimidated by Serena they very often play way over their heads to try(sometimes successfully) to beat her,commentators tennis writers,non fans put forth lazy disengenuious tropes about supposed intimation,fear,them letting Serena beat them,and weak era players. This match and many others depict the absolute falsehood of these anti Serena agenda filled lies. Dementieva served out of her mind, she was known for a weak first and 2nd Serve,with record setting double faults, but served at a whole other level,many players wouldn't have beat her that day but again it shows how deep Serena can,will and does dig and how tough she is. GOAT/ QUEEN 👑/ICON👏👍

@@co9971 I get that, but without injury she had a very good chance to win the French the following year. I think Stosur could have won the final, but Elena wasn't losing to Fran in the semi without the injury. I truly believe in any other era Dementieva would have been dominant, it's unfortunate she played during Serena's! LoLLL To me Dementieva is one of the best bell strikers womens tennis has ever seen - and thats why she would give Serena a lot of trouble - her balls had pace, spin, she was very good at picking her targets...unfortunately not having a reliable serve let her game down. But you always knew you were in for a treat when her and Serena would face each other!
@regulusarcturus
@regulusarcturus 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. Dementieva wouldn’t have won a Slam in any era because she had too many exploitable weaknesses. Her serve was her Achille’s heal sure, but she was also mentally frail and was not a good strategist. She played cross-court 90% of the time and her BHDTL in particular was quite weak and attackable. She maxed out on her potential in the era that she played and I very much doubt she would have won a Slam even now.

I liked Dementieva a lot... I remember her mother watching... Though she never had a quite good serve among other women Serena is out of comparison of course overall she was playing very nice... At 15.53 Serena runs with left hand like punch and right with the raquet hoding it like a sword very high like she plays on Gladiator... xaxaxa very funny.

It's not the Serena can't be beaten, (most of the time she loses, she beats herself). It's that she's so darn HARD TO BEAT.😊

@@carrerau7138 are you serious? Court played mostly during the non-open era. She did not have to play as many players then as they do now to get to a final. She was given byes. Also, when she played many players would skip those tournaments as they were not majors at the time. As far as Steffi Graf, she and Serena are nearly evenly matched. Some give Graf a slight advantage. I don't because of the serve coming from Williams' on a good day, as many as 22 aces in a game. She is the more rounded player overall.

@@carrerau7138 I've seen how they played back then. It was Steffi who started with the power play. To compare those ladies (even Graff) to the more powerful hitting players now is like comparing apples and oranges. They (even Graff) did not possess the serve of many of the players now, and not just Serena. With Serena, I'm not just talking speed (not the fastest), but accuracy. Steffi did have a good serve too, but Serena's is better.

@@carrerau7138 yeah, at that time. I did not say Serena had the fastest serve, her return can be even faster. I said the speed was not as important as accuracy. Of course they do go hand in hand. Guess you didn't read the part where I said Graff had a good serve. It just was not as accurate as Serena's.
