@genericscout5408 weird, but definitely possible people will climb overhang walls with invisible holds, so a slab wall with pretty noticeable grips is doable. I figure the climber used a backpack or maybe pulled the pumpkin up with a rope after reaching the top.

It was actually really easy, I was an engineering student there at the time and was friends with the group responsible for this prank, though I didn't take part in it. All they did was us slightly modified rock climbing gear. The main climber put a pulley on the spire and then winched the pumpkin, which was held in a harness, to the top.

There was a similar prank that happened at one of the colleges in Cambridge (King’s College I believe) where two students free hand climbed one of the two spires of the college chapel at night and placed a traffic cone on top. A lot of construction crew with scaffolding came to get it down, but couldn’t do it before night. That night the same two students climbed the spire, took down the cone, and placed it on the other spire.

I went to Cornell as a Freshman in 1999. Tales of the pumpkin were common. Around 2003 or so, stories that seemed credible surfaced that the prankster was a rock climber and had climbed out of the tower windows and onto the roof with the pumpkin strapped to his back. This would not have been a long climb, but it would have been a high one. There also may be a hatch, visible in the picture, that they climbed through instead of the window. The reason it wasn't removed was because they expected it to fall off quickly, saving the difficulty of bringing in the crane. But it freeze dried and stayed until it thawed in the spring. Also, avoiding the bells would not have been difficult. They almost certainly had helo from a chimesmaster (one of about half a dozen students with keys who play the chimes each day). There is plenty of space to avoid those ropes. They take students passed them to see the top of the tower on tours all the time. I've been up there myself. First time I was up there was touring the college in 1998 as a high school senior, probably about 6 months after the pumpkin came down. It was a big topic of the tour. As a prank, though, I do think it got beat by the group at (I think) MIT that disassembled a police car and reassembled it in the roof of a building.

The only thing I can think is that, just for giggles, somebody engineered a catapult with an adjustable ballast. One weight of the pumpkin, one exact measuring of weight, distance and height, one "quick" calculation, aim the thing just right- - bam - Perfect trajectory to spear a pumpkin on whatever tower you have the exact dimensions of (height, distance away from, weight of object you wish to hurl)

I was a student at Cornell from 1999-2003. Each year a pumpkin was placed upon the spire. We had a talented group of professional rock climbers on campus during that time and they regularly free-climbed buildings. That building was a particular favorite... as long as they avoided detection by campus police. As far as I know no one ever got caught.

@@linkfromzelda1002 a parachute isn't going to help you from that height. Usually it's someone's car that ends up hundreds of feet high on a uni roof. That's always done with a crane though. This one's a real headscratcher..
