I always used the basic stick with a notch in the front. It's always worked and this is what dad would use. He was an industrial arts teacher who specialized in wood working. I was visiting the Technology Education department (the name has changed) and one of the younger teachers showed me the push stick that you like. He showed me a scar on his hand from the older notch style blowing apart from hitting the blade. He explained to me that the piece made out of the plywood was safer because the plywood won't blow apart like that. He also likes the design of the newer style because he feels as though there is more control. So dad, I moved to the newer style stick.

Depends on what the piece I'm cutting is like. I have both types of push sticks and use the one or two that is best for the application.

I use the Matthias approach of 2 push sticks. It is like a pair of wooden hands that can get clipped my a saw blade and be swapped out! Better control with 2... but 1 is better than none!!

I use John Heisz style, definitely already the "best". To me yours looks like a souped up version of his lol, so yours is the bestester one!

Actually, mine is. It's very similar to yours, but has a partial finger ring. It's won't trap a finger, and allows me to pick up the next piece of stock while letting the stick dangle from my 3rd or 4th finger. It also has a magnet to keep it handy on thesaw cabinet.

I use a homemade push stick similar to yours only with 3/4” plywood and a little different grip and of course I have one in 1/2” plywood. And hey you can always make another when they wear out. Awesome video

A year or two ago I printed out both John Heisz's and Mathias Wandel's patterns for push sticks. Previous to that I had been using a dual stick of my own design. I used both of them for a week or so until I finally adopted John's design full time. So, yep, I agree.

I agree... This design will keep hand far above the peak height of the blade in all sawing configurations.

I have one that I made that surrounds the fingers but I don't love it because I have a tendency to want to stick a finger out for support. I took your push stick plan with a grain of salt after you crosscut that piece using the fence. I've seen that end badly and it still terrifies me, especially because it seems so innocuous.

I use both, depending on the situation. You should publish a template so others can re-create it for themselves. I like the ability to use the tip to push as well as the "shoe" on yours. Good idea.

I prefer to use two push sticks. I use the kind you made between the blade and fence and the straight push stick to the left of the blade. I make the first from plywood and the second from solid wood.

I use a similar 2-in-1. Trianglular with overlapped forstner through-holes for the grip. Rear tab plus front fishmouth.

I use the style that you just made. It's not quite as fancy....but I think it's a lot better than the other kind. I did use that other shape for a long time.....with few problems.

I use ones like yours most of the time. I also have a rounded stick shaped one with a nail point to grip the material.

I use one like this but it's cut from a 2x8 rather than plywood. Feels super stable and the thicker handle is more comfortable. Kind of sucks that these get eaten up when you cut thin strips though.

I use a combination of a microjig and John heisz' push stick. I tend to reach for his more often but sometimes I think it is worth taking the time to take out the microjig.

I'm making one. I've been known to use both kinds but prefer the kind that's not like the one that came with the saw.

I often use scrap plywood to make push sticks, but never take the time to cut handles onto them. They either large rectangles or long sticks similar to the plastic manufactured versions. I like what you've done her.

I use the Gripper(s). Won them in a contest, otherwise I would be using one like you made. That design makes the most sense to me.

Good video! suggestion for a new one could be the stool seen around 1:40, looks like something I would build to use in my shop.

I came here expecting an epic video that would change my life when it comes to push sticks, and absolute pure excellence... I was not disappointing.

I use the other kind. I have one that I bought for my old saw and one that came with my new saw. I use them both as extensions of my hands to push the wood through with one and to either help hold down or hold the wood secure to the fence as I'm cutting. I really don't like the one you made because it gives you less reach, which encourages you to put more pressure on the wood as you are leaning further over the table saw, which would be really bad if you slip. I'll admit that the changes are small that anything bad would happen, but they are there and I don't take any chances with safety that I don't have to.

Dang.. Board with some dovetail/t slot grooves and a pair of Matchfit clamps is a really really good idea.

Great push stick. Suggestion is to add a rare earth magnet to the side and stick it to the side of your saw. Out of the way yet always within arms reach.

Good one & "Best" is relative. As long as it keeps your fingers/hand away from that spinning blade, it's the best to use............. :)

I never used the second stick you showed, I don't like the possibility of the piece riding up on the blade. I prefer the style where you keep pressure on the piece against the surface all the way though the cut, like your design.

I use the plastic pushsticks often supplied with the machines. I like the design, but would prefer it to be made from timber or plywood so that it doesn't send plastic chips everywhere when I clip the blade with it. One day I'll run a batch of them.

I've been struggling along using scraps and whatever was laying on the off side of my table saw, but now I have hope. I truly can have The Greater Push Stick of All Time. Bless your soul man. All kidding aside, nice job an fun video to watch. Your editing is getting pretty sic. And BTW, how do you like that Rigid combination sander? I was looking at the Wen version of it. Is the belt portion worth the extra $$? Anyone else have a thought on that unit? Cheers!

The push stick looks fine, but your table saw technique needs an upgrade IMO. I would never use the rip fence to cut anything that’s wider than it is long. Or make a through cut without a guard or Irving knife in place.

I have a 1x4, with a birds mouth cut in the end. I don't want to have a second thought about pushing the stick into the blade if I need to.

That's one way to hide an unsightly knot. :) Myself, I use whatever scrap of wood is handy as long as it is of reasonable length and kindof skinny.

Are use the same style push Stick as the one you made. I make them six at a time, when you wear it out, you throw it away.

That fact that this second rate push stick is not made with walnut puts it at like 4th or 5th for me

You know what's better than the greatest pushstick of all time? Two regular pushsticks being used responsibly as a pair.

I use dust collection.

My push stick is an 18" purple dildo. Don't knock it until you've tried it - it has everything, vibration dampening, suction cup base for easy storage onto the side of my tool box, bright purple is easy to find so it never gets lost on a workbench covered in tools, etc.

How is your Ridgid saw behaving? Have you had any issues with the blade/trunnion alignment?

I like your push stick what i don't like is the term "ALL TIME", or "ULTIMATE" like that design is perfect for everyone, in every situation, for all time, your push stick is well designed and should work in the most part. Again it's these Ultimate end all be terms that do not fit

I believe people gravely underestimate the speed at which the saw will pull your hand toward the blade in the event of an accident. The common answer is to lengthen the distance between blade and hand, but that just increases instability. Another answer is to use beefier products like the micro-jig. I have no experience with that one but I'd say if the saw grabbed it, it would quickly pull it from your hand and you'd be left in no better situation. To all this, my actual answer. Push sticks built into a system that rides over the fence. This ensures the center point of downward force isn't over the blade and no matter the handle length you're always stable because you're locked in on the fence on two sides.

What is the notch at the toe end for? You demonstrated using the 'sole' and 'heel', but not that toe notch. Might it be so you can have the option of using 2 of these in the manner of the 2-stick Matthias Wandel type, for situations where you might prefer that configuration? Just curious.

i cut mlne out of old aluminum road signs then put walnut handles on them and mine is about the same as your deslgn and some of them i put saw handles on them it a great push stick design you make videos

I tossed that plastic piece of crap. Oh yeah I have the same table saw. I built the style we used in wood shop but I like the open handle design and being higher on the stick as well as the pusher notch on the front.
