This is how Christians feel about the false accusation, arrest and execution of Jesus Christ. I'm not sure if King intended the parallel. The references to God, heaven and even hell so many times throughout the film might just be to reflect the Bible-belt location of the film. Then again, maybe not. Thanks for sharing your reaction. The "Don't put me in the dark, I'm afraid of the dark" moment at the end always gets me most too.

The heaviest part for me is when Tom Hanks says "may God have mercy on your soul" at John's execution, and you know he's saying it for himself.

We lost Michael Clarke Duncan so early. That guy was amazing, even his comedic roles, like Talladega nights and Slammin' Salmon were amazing. Whether it was comedy or drama, the guy showed up, or at least held his own against, some of the biggest names in acting. I guess we're lucky to have the films of his, we have.

Stephen King is such an amazing writer. People just know him from his horror stories, but this and shawshank are some of the best work he ever wrote.
@sfodd1979
@sfodd1979 2 жыл бұрын
They're both still kind of horror, just non-conventional. Shawshank deals with being locked up for a murder you didn't commit, and is pretty heavy on the non-consensual sex. This deals with being forced to live a very long life with soul-crushing regret. Both are pretty horrific concepts, some would say much worse than ghosts, demons, or what have you. Not that I'm hating on any of Stephen King's works, but these storyiies still have his horror elements.

Not that I thought it would ever actually happen, but his characters are so relatable that even a high school student understood a father who's wife was probably dead, had monsters outside, and people turning into monsters inside. You have to remember that a urinary tract infection had no cure in the 1930s (So even going to the doctor probably wouldn't help much). The first antibiotic, penicillin, was only discovered in 1928 and wasn't used on a patient in the U.S. until 1942.

When the Green Mile was first published, it came out as a series of 6 books in 1996. I happened to be in the US when I discovered them, collected them all and read them during my trip. I've still got them. What is great about this film is that it is so true to the written story (hence the length) and also all of the characterisations were brilliant. The actors seemed to fit their descriptions almost to a tee.

For you, and those who've never read the book.. The movie doesn't say what Del or the others did to land them on death row. From the web for ease: Eduard Delacroix was a death-row inmate incarcerated at Cold Mountain Penitentiary for raping and killing a young girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children. ---- I believe this was left out so that Percy becomes the primary "villain" and to keep Del a sympathetic character. That, or maybe a message of "it doesn't matter what he did, he didn't deserve how he was executed.

You might hear of Michael Clarke Duncan; he portrays John Coffey. We have to thank Bruce Willis for suggesting Big Mike for the role of John Coffey. Because Big Mike had worked with Bruce on another movie year before The Green Mile called Armageddon. Big Mike was a gentle giant like his character, John Coffey according to his closest friends. Sadly, Big Mike died in 2012. Speaking of Tom Hanks, he spoken eulogy for his friend, Big Mike.

Antibiotics weren't a thing until 1942, and that was the first time it was used in a hospital. You waited out infections. You hoped and prayed you got better. It took time to become popular. Going to the doctor wouldn't have helped. Back then, getting an infection was very dangerous. It killed more people on the battlefield than bullets. Getting wounded got you killed later quite a bit. He was big, but he wasn't that tall. He was walking on milk crates. I thought he was wearing platform shoes, but the actor who played Brutal said in an interview that he was only one inch shorter.

I've seen dozens of people reacting to this movie and I always look forward to the part where John Coffey reveals his powers for the first time by expelling the bugs from his mouth. Everyone pretty much does what you did, by either showing or saying "WTF??!!" Really great movie and one of the best adaptations of a book to a movie I have ever seen. The same director also did two other Stephen King adaptations that are worth watching for sure: The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist.... Stephen King has confirmed that John Coffee's initials, JC, are indeed a reference to Jesus Christ since John is a healer who is persecuted in this world. Trivia: If we take the average lifespan of a mouse (two years) and figure that Mr. Jingles has lived about 32 times that (64 years), then using that math Paul will live beyond the year 4000.

About the books. The movie follows the story pretty well. We learn what Dell did, and it was as bad as what Bill did. The back story about the murder of the girls is deeper. Bill was an itinerant worker. He left the job about a month before the murders. Paul spends a lot of time learning the details of the story. There is some evidence that John didn’t commit the murders but the county sheriff isn’t going to allow it to come to light.
@Vero2yu

Actually they never say what ''Dell'' did. As bad as what he did? Not likely, he surely did not do what he did and probably not deliberate, secondly why did the black guy seemingly like him if he was ''as bad'' as the psycho paedophile?

The book is one of my favorites and the movie is extremely faithful to the book. The primary thing left out of the movie are story lines in the old folks home where it goes back and forth between past and present day. One of the workers at the home is very much like Percy and has it in for Paul so there is drama there. I think the line about nurse Godzilla is just a tip of the hat to what is left out.

And then one day he was gone, my manager had him taken to the Banfield vet inside the store and had him euthanized. I cried like and was very upset, so it was very ironic how things played out. Warning to readers: Spoilers in this comment! I know this may be an unpopular opinion but I think the actor who played Percy (I can't recall his name at the moment) should have won an Oscar for his performance. I don't know that I've ever hated another character in any story or film so much. Your reaction was intelligent and charming and I loved it. Not too many folks guess that it was Wild Bill that really killed the little girls as quickly as you did. Also at one point you mentioned something about how "Percy's character actually has some real depth to him." You're right. It took me years to realize that fact (even after reading the books) just how simple as well as a complex character he is all at the same time. I hated him too much to see it, which tells me that I still have some growing up to do myself. Percy at his core is simply a spoiled little boy in an adult's body. He is like a boy who enjoyed burning ants with a magnifying glass that grew up to still enjoy doing the same thing. He could easily have been a serial killer but he was a death row gaurd instead. He was still such a child as an adult that he never learned to walk in the center of the mile instead of close to the cells, even after Wild Bill grabbed him the first time and made him wet himself. He had no business doing this job. And this actor portrayed all those things perfectly...so perfectly, in fact, that I feel as though it harmed his career. To this day, no one can see that man's face without seeing Percy Wetmore. A shame but a truth. The scene where Paul walks up and shakes John's hand at the end hits me in the heart every time. Great reaction. You are so adorable with your laughter and tears too. Well done!

Not to take anything away from Michal Clark Duncan, he was a big guy, the production of the movie made him look bigger. He was always filmed up at. He wore wrist bands to make the veins in his arms stick out, something to make his arms look bigger. Items on the set were made small like beds he would have to curl up in. Doorways were shortened so he had to duck his head to go through them.

It roughly parallels the story of Jesus Christ. How John healed people, was persecuted and eventually put to death. There are a lot of parallels one can interpret, from the apostles to the thieves executed along with Jesus, to Pontius Pilate. Even the initials "J.C."

One part that always gets me is when Del says, when they are about to bring him to the electric chair, "I sure wish I coulda met you guys somewheres else." You mentioned that they don't tell us the audience what Del did to be on death row. That's one of the things they left out from the book: He raped and killed an underage girl and then burned her body. Then, that fire got out of control and caught a nearby building on fire killing 6 more. They most likely left that out so it would be easier to be sympathetic to him.

Oh, yeah, I've read the book. There was a lot more story of Paul's life in the nursing home, and more explaination as to how he lost his wife, Jan. Actually, it was originally published in six parts, an episodic much in the style of 19th century serials, such as those by Charles Dickens.

The greatest crime surrounding this movie involved the academy awards. While Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey), was nominated as best supporting actor, he didn't win. The oscar went to Michael Caine that year. No one remembers Michael Caine's character or the movie he won it for that year. But anyone who's ever seen The Green Mile can NEVER forget John Coffey!

: I spent 30 years of my life without watching this movie and I watched it like only a month ago. I love how we can draw a parallel between John's power and what it's like being an introverted empath and basically feeling everything other people are feeling, sharing their burden and their emotions and then feeling absolutely exhausted

Del (Delacroix) was of Cajun ancestry. That's why he uses a lot of French words. The "flies" you see coming out of John's mouth, every time he heals someone, is a manifestation of the evil that plagues the world. John sucks the evil out, and releases it as flies that disappear into the ether. Thus, that particular evil is not able to re-infestate any other individual.

poor John Coffey, I knew right from the start that he was innocent of the accusation against him. No way would such a sweet and caring person commit such a horrible atrocious crime like that. Paul's literally the luckiest character since he has a real long life to live, most audiences wish to have the same

You're right that the longer movie allowed them to stay close to the original book. In fact, there is only 1 important detail not in the movies that is in the books, & it has to do with the identity & backstory of John. The movie gives you the 2 more subtle out of 3 clues in the book, & if the reader puts them together before the very end then it's a huge foreshadowing of the book's end. Clue 1: How John keeps calling all the guards "boss". Though not a 100% guarantee, during Depression era U.S. it's very unlikely for a black man in his 30s or 40s to call anyone but a superior at work that. Instead everywhere he went other than his job he would habitually use "sir" adressing all white men, in order to be sure to not rile any racists around him into thinking he doesn't "know his place". Clue 2: The discussion with John's lawyer, when he says that before & during John's trial that they could find no records of him anywhere despite a thorough search. While not surprising that John couldn't read or write anything other than his name, the fact that he can't remember his birthdate, what town he was born in, any relative that could be contacted, a place or person that might have info on where he/his family were from, etc. is weird. Typically 4-5 year olds are more than capable of memorizing a few key details like their own birthday & such. This indicates that by the time John was old enough to be taught more than his name, he had been separated from anyone that cared to teach him. Again, not 100% proof, but odd because even if he had been orphaned there would have been someone overseeing his housing. Someone that would've had some kind of custody paperwork, even if he went to work as early as the age of 6-7. Clue 3: In the movie you see when John is brought to this prison he is not in prison garb & had no shoes. In fact later in the flashback you see the clothes are the same ones he was arrested in, just with the blood washed out. Him not fitting in any prison provided garb leads to clue 3. On the Green Mile's wash day, instead of just switching him clean underwear & clothes for his dirty ones, John has to strip to his underwear & wait for his clothes to be washed & dried & returned right away. This is when everyone sees his back, which is covered in multiple layers of whipping scars. Of course logic says there is no way a black kid/teen would just hang around a place to get more than 1 whipping like that. Money or not, he'd run away & live on the streets if need be while trying to find a job to feed himself. Unless he COULDN'T run away, because he was restrained or threatened with more severe violence like a gun. Put all the clues together, & it sounds like John is clearly a former slave, except he couldn't be right? The lawyer & everyone else never put these facts together beause he's way too young to have been a slave. Just look at him! Nah, it's the 1930s & he can't be over 45 years old. Not gray, no wrinkles to speak of, so muscular! Is this a plot hole? Did the author mix up when slavery was abolished? EXCEPT at the end of the book, you are presented with a mouse & a man that are still alive so, so many years after exposure to just a bit of John's powers. No, you weren't crazy for thinking he was a slave for at least a good portion of his early life. No wonder he was so tired of seeing & feeling human cruelty, to the point that he willingly let himself be executed for heinous crimes he didn't commit. 😭😭 [Minor details left out of the movie for time are the specifics of the crimes that the 1st two executed prisoners were convicted of. Both had murdered for different reasons, 1 intentionally & 1 accidentally, but both truly were sorry instead of just being sorry they were caught because deep down they were good people.]

As a veterinarian I can tell you the differences between mice and rats are as numerous as the difference between dogs and cats. Mice are not fun pets, but rats make great pets. Mice are aggressive, rats are not. Mice can't really be taught many tasks, rats can be taught to do stuff that dogs can do. If you can't tell, I love rats, they make great pets and have great personalities
