“When you think about the fact that less than 11 percent of us can actually speak (Vagahau Niue), it’s terrifying, it really is.” Subscribe to Re: bit.ly/subscribe-re
The Fineone Hakupu community house has proudly sat at the top of Ariki St, Grey Lynn, for over 50 years, a pillar of the Central Auckland Niuean population. The house serves as space for generations of Hakupu members to meet, sing, celebrate and practise their culture.
In this episode of STILL HERE we met Leki Jackson-Bourke (28, Niuean, Samoan, Tongan), a multidisciplinary creative and teacher at Marcellin College fighting alongside his family and community to revitalise the endangered Niuean language and culture.
“When we come to this house [Ariki Street], it’s like the whispers of our ancestors are in the walls,” says Leki.
STILL HERE is a love letter to our inner-city Auckland Pasifika community. Since the 1950s, the Pasifika community has cultivated a unique Central Auckland identity that many of the community’s youth proudly embrace; both as an act of resistance from ongoing gentrification and as an unapologetic reminder that they and their families are Still Here.

Fakaaue lahi ma Leki. Awesome to see our Ariki House still being used to serve the Hakupu families - putting it to such good use. Also so cool to see our Aunty Simoe one of the only or few foundation Matuas still there. Wow is that nearly 50 plus? years since they have been there. Awesome. Thank you to the Hakupu new generation putting it to good use. Fakaaue lahi. Fakaaue ke he Atua.🙏🙏🙏

love stories like this! thank you Re:News 🙋🏻‍♀️🙏🏼 cultural belonging and the retaining and revitalising of our cultural identities & languages as Pacific peoples in NZ is so important! i esp liked how Leki acknowledges that we as Pacific people are not claiming (or rather, should not claim) that we are the tangata whenua of this land but we are ever so grateful to have spaces within this beautiful land where we can embrace our cultures ☺️ malo lahi Aotearoa!

The similarity in language is a result of the Tu'i Tonga's influence.

the aspect ratio is a bit odd
@francois9747
@francois9747 3 ай бұрын
It's the 1:1 Aspect ratio. Gives off the vibe of an old camera film, makes the energy of the motion picture chillaxed and channels the focus of the viewer to a central subject by not showing more of the background due to the square shaped format.

I try very hard to teach my kids how to speak the language but then i gave up. Only nana can speak niuean to them and they speak back. When NANA died, everything change. I was busy working . I left in the dark, and came home in the dark. The mother doesnt help. She doesnt speak niuean well. Everything nana taught them went up in smoke. They only speak english and completely lost their vagahau niue.

Totally understand but it’s never too late to learn. Jump on the Vagahau Niue apps - Ponataki and the other is Fakaako e Vagahau Niue. Both have helped me :)
