With a little adaptation of equipment and routine, just about any bike can be used for utility purposes like grocery shopping. Such activities are made much easier with a small cargo e-bike such as the Tern HSD which is capable of easily carrying a full week's groceries ... about double the load in this video!

A great demo of the Shortbed Tray in action & being able to securely carry a 600x400 Eurocrate on the back of the HSD. Very informative in that respect!

These HSD videos are helpful in understanding how the hsd might work for new riders ahead of a purchase. Thank you. Do you need to contribute much effort to climb steep hills in turbo mode?
@lostinlivi
@lostinlivi 2 жыл бұрын
Thank for your comment. There's a limit to how much assistance the motor will give and the assistance is proportional to the effort put in by the rider so thee comes a point where the motor maxes out and any extra effort from the rider gets no more assistance. Because the proportion of assistance increases as you go up the modes, in turbo you run out of assistance with relatively little effort. The bike will still climb the hill, but at quite a slow speed. Think of it like spinning a 'granny gear' to climb a hill on a regular non-assist bike.

Thanks for posting this. We took the plunge and went carless 8 months ago so I've recently bought a Tern HSD 8Si and I have ordered the short bed tray and a Eurocrate for the shopping (no such luck finding one on a beech in London). I have a question if that is OK, where did you get the tarpaulin from, it looks made to measure, maybe you cut it to size yourself?
@lostinlivi

Congratulations on ditching the car! I made the cover from an old IKEA bag and grommets and bungees bought on Amazon to hold it down. I've since replaced it with another, neater, self-made cover made from an unused poncho.

@@lostinlivi Thanks, that's great. I ordered some self sealing snap on grommets and we have plenty of tarpaulin in the shed we can cut to size. When we got on a tour I'm thinking of using a cabin sized wheelie case that should fit on the tray like a glove so I'll make sure the tarpaulin can cover that too. We're loving not having a car, the ULEZ extension instigated it, we sold our car intending to buy another the day after and 8 months on we are still loving life without a car, using our bikes even more and using the two together railcard.

Hello, I recently purchased one of these bikes(same colour). I've ordered a Hanfey mirror from Amazon that screws into the end of the RH handlebar(not yet arrived). I'm not sure if it will be suitable, can you advise what mirror you went with? Is that a gps on your right handlebar? I want to get one but don't know which one i should get. Can you make any suggestions? Thanks very much! P.S. love your Transit camper very jealous!

HI, The mirror is a Busch & Muller 6 cm with a short stem. The do 6 & 8 cm and various stem lengths and come with both a bar-end mount (which does not fit Tern handlebars) and an external bar mount. Tern's handlebar internal diameter is less than standard 'bars so not all bar-end mounts will fit. The GPS on my HSD is a Garmin Edge 130+ and an accessory cadence sensor. It's a base model that I only use to keep a record of my rides. There's a whole range that will do much more and plan routes for you but I prefer paper maps, a weather forecast and a sense of adventure for that 😂.

Interesting real ride for groceries. Three bags are easier to carry on bicycle like this instead of walking (done this). And three bags will fit in on the top, one in front, six in total. Which is somewhat alternative to the car trunk. But buying more food and getting it by the car often results in spoiled food.
@lostinlivi
@lostinlivi 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. That was far from a full load. I always bag stuff paying attention balancing the load, before putting the bags into the panniers or into the crates on the racks. The only time I have ever had spoiled food was some poorly packed peaches bought at a market along with other fruit and veg that essentially squashed them - I'd have packed them separately on top if I'd been buying at a supermarket.

@@lostinlivi I mean, often we buy lot of food because we could load into all in the car, but some of this food is getting spoiled later on. Just forgotten in the refrigerator. I'm watching about cargo bikes, because I'm moving to Europe and trying to find out which wheels size is good. Is 20 inches somewhat limiting on long rides (weekend country side trips).

@@kostyafedot551 I've never had any problem with any size wheel (I ride 16", 20" and 28") on long rides. The HSD's wheels are comfortable on almost any surface, their construction contributes to the strength of the bike and its stability when loaded.

Thank you very much for posting the video. It is a great and informative demo of the Shortbed Tray. I am about to purchase a HSD and I am just coming back from the bike-shop and they said that you may have difficulties accessing and removing the battery if you attach the Shortbed tray lengthwise as you did. They said it is meant to be attached crosswise. Is that true and how do you charge/remove your battery?
@lostinlivi
@lostinlivi 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The shortbed tray was originally designed for the GSD but apart from battery access it also fits the HSD. The tray consists of two parts: the frame and an aluminium plate (the plate serves no purpose if you are using the frame with a crate). I've never used it mounted crosswise and I think the frame prevents removal of the battery. When mounted lengthwise without the plate the battery can be removed freely but if the plate is fitted it obstructs the battery access by about 4-5 mm. The solution is to cut or grind off about 5 mm from the edge of the plate where it overlaps. I use my tray without the plate fitted as the frame alone holds my crate securely. Most of the time I charge the battery on the HSD but I have a second battery that I swap over every couple of months. My only caveat to all that is that my HSD is of course the first generation model. I don't know if changes to the design of the new generation HSD affect battery access.

@@lostinlivi Thank you very much for your swift reply. Very helpful. The plan is to use the tray primarily with a crate, so there will probably also be not much use for the plate for me either. And I saw in your other (also very helpful) review that you were not using the plate at all. But from that video I could not tell whether you're able to remove the battery with the frame attached. Thanks for clarifying. So I will order the tray along with the bike. I will most likely purchase a Gen1 S8i as well, so there should not be a problem with battery access then. Thanks again & greetings from Germany!

Like your video and the bike; does the HSD come with the center stand? I'm considering between a GSD and an HSD. What kind of alock you use?
@lostinlivi

Thanks. The DuoStand is an optional extra ... the HSD is fitted as standard with a single kick-stand. The HSD has an Abus frame lock fitted as standard which I supplement with Kryptonite D-locks, a ground anchor and an alarm. If you haven't already found it, I have a video of using a GSD with a Carlo Cargo trailer attached ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adqdeZhzstSWm6c.html .
