Pedro Ramírez Vázquez was an incredibly important figure in Mexican architecture. He designed, among many other things, the Anthropology Museum and the Azteca Stadium, both seen in the video. He also presided the organizing committee of the 1968 Olympics and of the 1970 World Cup. With his direction, Lance Wyman developed such an influential iconography, that its style is still used today in Mexico City and elsewhere in the country when designing icons, emblems and wayfinding.

@@MrLoaded2012 si Barcelona 1992 destaca por el uso de los colores y los trazos del gran pintor catalán Joan Miró..Munich me gusta mucho su logo,su mascota y sobretodo tuvo los estadios con el diseño más moderno y high tech en unos olímpicos hasta esa fecha en los 70's pero por desgracia fueron opacados por las terribles noticias del atentado de los rehenes israelíes!! 👍🤙

@@oscarchacalnerd4108 En efecto, la desgracia de Munich oscureció todo lo demás. El estado es majestuoso y, en cuanto al diseño, los pictogramas y demás de Otl Aicher están entre lo mejor que se ha hecho en la historia de los JJOO.

I was a child that year, but I remember the excitement and how modern the logo looked. I seem to remember that there were little metallic pendants or keychains you could collect with the sports icons on them - I don't remember from where, but I thought they were the coolest. I had a few of them still when I was in my teens, but they're lost his. I never made the connection, but the connections between then and the icon interfaces now is startling.

My grandparents got married on October 2, 1968, we are from Mexico City. To date they talk about the huge revolution the Olympics in Mexico brought in a lot of ways, and how much people loved it. Cheers. 🇲🇽 Edit: Grandpa got a keychain of every sport. A collection we cherish a lot.

Sin duda alguna una de las Olimpiadas más emblemáticas de la historia, por todas sus innovaciones y contexto social-cultural y mediático. Hasta ahora, somos las únicas Olimpiadas cuyo nombre hacen alusión tanto al país, como a la Ciudad Anfitriona. 😍👌🏾🇲🇽 Qué fortuna que nuestra capital se llame igual que nuestro país, jajaja.

It was one of the best Olympics in terms of logo graphic design and iconography, it left us international recognition, leaving the anonymity of being another third world country and projecting ourselves as a tourist, it left a couple of structures used until now for sports although some were more like "white elephants". On the other hand, the social and political repression that was lived, stained the Olympiad in a local sense, since on October 2, 1968 the student movement culminated with a massacre perpetrated at the hands of the government, added to the subsequent increase in the foreign debt. The holding of the Olympiad brought Mexico pros and cons, no doubt about this.

Yo como profesional del diseño gráfico me encanta saber sobre como fue la historia de la identidad que le dieron a los JUegos Olímpicos de México 1968, sin duda alguna, marcaron un antes y un despúes y como mexicano me siento orgulloso de ver como en hay talento y se supo sacar y explotar al punto que hasta lo recuerdan quienes lo vivieron, y los conocermos, valoramos y apreciamos a quienes no nos tocó vivirlo.

Lance Wyman’s designs have really given México City a coherent brand given that he did the Metro’s graphic design and iconography. He did the Metro map for Washington, DC as well in a similar style

Pedro Ramirez y su equipo hicieron por así decirlo sus borradores y bocetos de los diseños de los emblemas de los juegos pero lacen Wyman los depuró el formó parte de su equipo para aprender de ellos.

Quizá las mejores olimpiadas que se han realizado, en lo deportivo, social y detalles como estos son los responsables. Después vino el 70 que igual o mejor. Mucha gente revuelve esto con la tragedia de tratelolco, a sacar el cobre de inmediato con sus tonterías políticas. Para mí fue perfectamente planeado porque ocupaban muertos, no se quien se más culpable, el gobierno o ellos (líderes). Demostrado que estudiar en una universidad "prestigiosa" y tener diplomas no te hace necesariamente un ser pensante.

Is it compulsory to say his (Ramirez Vasquez) full name? I guess his exemplary achievement led to a law that requires anyone to say his name to say both first and last names (or maternal and paternal surnames?) always. haha

Ramirez is not his first name. Thats Pedro. Ramirez is his paternal last name. Vasquez is his maternal last name. That law you are talking about, is the Spanish naming custom. You seem to be complaining, while a major point is tradition being identity... just saying.

As stated above, Ramirez was his first surname and Vázquez was his second surname. His name was Pedro. Many countries by law keep both the first maternal and the first paternal surnames: say, if my mom's name is Andrea Pérez Ramírez and my dad's name Jorge Arredondo Ortiz, and they decide to name me Santiago, then my full name is Santiago Arredondo Pérez. It has nothing to do with his exemplary achievement (though it remains iconic), but rather because Ramirez and Vázquez are common last names, and so saying just one when referring to someone famous could lead to confusion. It also has to do with the fact that both surnames together are signature of his work, as in, it's the way he's known around artistic circles. Saying both is more effectively specific.

To be honest the only thing those games remind me is the Tlatelolco student massacre that the very own president (Gustavo diaz ordaz) organized a few day prior to the games, he did it so nobody could see the true status of mexico, where the working class people and students were exploited and oppressed, any kind of protest agaist it was censored with death or forced dissapearings, but yeah, what a nice typography, i don't dismiss the work of the artist who made it, but its hard to look at when it was used to cover up the blood of hundreds of missing youths

Es importante que se recuerde y se hable; pero para todo hay espacios, hay ocasiones. Nadie puede negar que fue una masacre injusta y autoritaria; pero el objetivo de esta video no es ese, el video nos habla de la labor y esfuerzo que pasaron para darle un nueva identidad a México por medio del diseño gráfico.

@@Rexisaurio Por supuesto. Es más, Ordáz siempre expresó su descontento por los JJOO. Lo que pasó en Tlatelolco hubiera pasado de todas formas porque el Gobierno fue, es y será autoritario haya JJOO o no.

Déjense de burradas, la manipulación de jóvenes en el 68 fué orquestada e instigada desde las más altas esferas del poder en Washington. Desestabilizar a México fué primordial, ya que gozaba de estabilidad social y económica, y lo demostraba ORGANIZANDO UNOS JUEGOS OLÍMPICOS. Los yankees no permitirían que sus vecinos tuvieran crecimiento y desarrollo y en un futuro parara el saqueo sistemático de América. Nota: Con lo anterior no estoy diciendo que fuera buena idea parar la desestabilización como lo hizo el Gobierno de Díaz Ordaz.
