James Owen As much as I love this movie I don’t love this scene. How is casual racism intellectual?
@jamesowen5702

@@Jay-jn6ul Well, it's the subtext in the culture clash that Boyle is playing around with. Wendel exudes all the training and professionalism expected of an FBI agent but you just know he must face prejudice from time to time because he's black (and has probably hard to work harder to overcome it), Boyle is a fat copper from a parochial part of Ireland and many would preconceive him as a useless yokel - perhaps especially, say, a high-flying FBI agent chasing international drug smugglers. Effectively in each others company both are outsiders because they're not traditional white men suits. Wendel's character and professionalism see him take the politically correct approach of ignoring these facts, while Boyle goes the other way and tosses them around in casual conversation (btw notice he only jokes around with inconsequential prejudices about black people and never questions Wendel's abilities as law enforcement due the his race). So these two different men have two polar opposite ways of dealing with and dismantling the superficial judgements people can make about them, and in the meanhile they discover a shared determination to bust the bad guys, in essence finding a commonality in each other that's more important than anything society might suppose makes them so different. That's why Boyle can make sly racial digs like this, and Wendel can smile fondly at the end of the film thinking about him, he knows he doesn't mean it but knows too why he says it. They're both outsiders sharing the experience of being in a dumb world that doesn't often understand them. Grounds for quite a good friendship. It's what makes the writing and acting in this film so brilliant, such sardonic wit and lyrical irony are rarely found in most comedies.

It's also a callback. In the scene where the two first meet Cheadle's first impression is Gleeson asking "I thought only black lads were drug dealers", a similarly absurd question. He's referencing it here in a "do you really think I'm stupid enough to genuinely think such absurd things" kind of way.

The guy's just messing with Don Cheadle's character. He's playing into the stereotype that rural Irish are ignorant and genuinely curious about other races. So they hear some racist stereotype and believe it because they have no other frame of reference. In Brendan Gleeson's character's case, he knows better but deliberately setting off an American (where race is a really prominent issue) is funny so he'll say whatever he can to make Don Cheadle's character think that he's really dumb when he 's actually pretty smart. Another aspect of both Irish and British humour is that we love to take the piss out of each other and never shy away from saying the most outrageous shit to our friends. A good example in my case is that I am Half-Irish and grew up in England and my mates would never stop making car bomb jokes. The thing with out sense of humour is that we will be polite to people we don't know or don't like. So that fact that Brendan's character is openly making a racist joke towards Don Cheadle's character shows that Brendan Gleeson's character actually really likes him and considers him a friend.

@@joshuabruce9599it doesn't necessarily mean he thinks he's a friend. In Ireland people will also act this way passive aggressively in order to get a rise out of someone. It's a game you play to mess with their head, or to deflate their ego if you think they're full of themselves.
