The global conveyer belt is part of the large-scale ocean circulation that is driven by differences in the density of the waters. It plays a key role in keeping the climate at balance and Europe warm. Global warming may change it forever with unforeseeable consequences.

Interesting story about that- in 1992, a cargo ship spilled 28,800 rubber duckies into the Pacific Ocean. Most traveled via currents in the Arctic and ended up washing ashore in places like Maine and Ireland around 10-15 years later. I'd guess there are still some of those original duckies bobbing about...

That was super useful! Just one thing: 2:26 the salt content doesn't rise by water evaporating (it's way to cold for that) but by water turning into ice which increase the concentration of salt in the water. It also increase in density turning into colder water as explained at the beginning of the video.

I would love to watch a remake of this video! longer and covering all the interactions with each current, what theyre called, what causes them, what happens when two meet, etcetc instead of just the gulf stream, even if it has to be cut into multiple parts, its very interesting and there isnt that much information about it, even less laid out in laymans terms, thanks!

Anyone growing up in Europe is taught, formally or informally that the Gulfstream has a massive affect on our lives. Even when you are a very small child. Usually when all the jellyfish start rocking up on shore or hurricanes that never come your way all of a sudden like to glance past. Europe would be nowhere near as green and fertile and moderate compared to other parts of the normal northern hemisphere

So, warming planet leads to ice melt. Ice melt leads to lower salt levels in the polar oceans. Lower salt levels leads to a much weaker current that brings warm water/air. Weaker current leads to lower temperatures. Lower temperatures leads to ice build up. Ice build up leads to higher salt levels. Higher salt levels leads to stronger currents. Stronger currents lead to higher temperatures. Higher temperatures leads to more ice melt. And so on.

My dad's a retired physics PhD with the UC system in California. He had a mainline into all forms of research going on for decades and he would share some of that knowledge with me. I remember back in the mid 80's he discussed the possible failure of the great heat pump and the causes/ramifications of that. That theory is STILL the same after 30 years. When humans finally destroy the environment, it's important to understand that we had ALL the time in the world to change and we didn't. Take that to the grave.

That movie sped up the process. In reality, it would only take a hundred years before a new ice age commenced if people don't stop heating up the atmosphere.

That movie was panned for its scientific inaccuracies. First it would happen over some decades instead of a week and secondly it wouldn't be as cold as they showed it and not in the entire northern hemisphere, but rather Scotland, Ireland, Iceland and most of Norway.

I love this video! Already knew a lot about the Gulf Stream, but this is a great visual aid and explanation/teaching tool. It really illustrates why the Gulf Stream is so important for our climate, in the Northern Hemisphere. The fact it is connected to the Arctic seawater and currents, as well as now, the melting of Greenland's glaciers, which will inject freshwater into it, diminishing the salt content, is very concerning for our climate future. Because then, as the video explains, the natural heat pump that has kept Europe warm since the last Ice Age, may shut down. C02 in the atmosphere, from burning fossil fuels, is driving the glaciers to melt (as most people know by now), in both the Arctic and Antarctica. Can't overstate how important our oceans are to maintaining a livable, healthy climate for all living things here on our planet Earth.

The Gulf _Stream_ is part of a larger _circulation_ system, the AMOC. Clearly stated at the beginning, and easy enough to understand. It is also part of the North Atlantic Gyre, which rotates clockwise in the North Atlantic.
