"The Guyver," known as "Mutronics" in Europe and South America, was released in 1991. This movie was directed by Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang, with Brian Yuzna as the producer. It draws loose inspiration from Yoshiki Takaya's Japanese manga series of the same name and was created in collaboration with Shochiku Films. The cast includes Mark Hamill, Vivian Wu, Jack Armstrong, Jimmie Walker, and David Gale.
The film centers on Sean Barker (played by Armstrong), a young man who stumbles upon an extraterrestrial artifact called "The Unit." This device transforms him into a hybrid super soldier known as "The Guyver." Barker soon discovers that a powerful corporation called Chronos is determined to obtain the Guyver unit and is engaged in the genetic engineering of monstrous creatures. The film received a mixed response from both critics and fans. A sequel titled "Guyver: Dark Hero" was released in 1994.

In spite of it's obvious limitations, classic animatronic-based and practical-effects transformations have always been more terrifying to me when compared to full CGI ones. It feels like when preformers can utilize something physical (like a prop, a costume, or an animatronic) within a scene, it can enhance their preformance.

Hard to argue against working with something real and tangible. I 100% agree with you in the fact these kinds of special effects can stand the test of time.

the fact the transformations are so obviously painful to the host is what makes their situations all the more tragic as they have no way to stop what's happening to them.

The whole situation sucked for him, but the worst part is that while all the other Zoanoids are fully alien/animal you can she Max's human eyes and part of his forehead, a little part of his remaining humanity. Even hearing how his voice sounds after his transformation is sad, you just knew it wasn't going to end well.

@@TheGuyverGeek Remember in the Animation of Bio Boosted Armor Guyver, what happened to Sho/Shu's parent, and those innocent villagers? That sh-t was dark as hell. Like the executives at Kronos are real bunch of irredeemable scumbags. I think number 6 of the leaders who was the only one of two women Zoalords, were the only ones that seemed to retain some inkling of "Humanity" they refused to involve small children, & schools, whenever possible. Number 6 in particular was appalled with the methods being utilized against the Guyvers hosts those hosts being "Children" in her eyes. Sadly I believe she's killed by one of the other leaders while trying to shield a couple of children from a beam attack.She dies in Makishima's (Guyver 3) arms something that seriously pisses him off.Apparently she was a younger clone of his mother. Poor guy had to watch his mom die TWICE. That's almost as messed up as when Lucy from Fairy Tail saw her future-self meet her end, situations like these are just plain DARK AF..

Practical effects courtesy of SFX wizard Screaming Mad George (who co-directed this movie and worked with the film's producer, Brian Yuzna, on a *bunch* of horror movies). Anyone who likes the goopy practical effects here would love Society from 1989!

All I can hear is Luke Skywalker getting tortured by The Emperor at 0:24 to 0:34. I can't wait to get this on 4K UHD from Unearthed Films. One problem however is the absurd price the 4K UHD is.
