The ‘rifle’ used by aircrews was usually a lever action Winchester 44-40. The rapid fire action was considered ok as there would be no firing from prone.

Anyone remember British TV series ‘Wings’? You’ll see lever actions rifles and Enfield or Webley top-break revolvers in the air-to-air gunnery role. About as personal as air combat gets I suppose.

Several large aircraft designs of this period discarded enclosed cockpits because the pilot's didn't want them, fearing they'd be a hindrance to vision. They only became a standard design feature when airspeed increased to a significant level to affect men in the open. The Vickers Vimy (the Handley page rival) had the same type of cockpit for this reason.

They didn't "fear" they wouldn't be able to see out of them well, they literally couldn't see out of them well. Improvements to windscreens to fix this issue didn't come until later.

Also, the first ones weren't put on because of wind speed, but because of frostbite issues at higher altitudes that more modern bombers were capable of flying at. At 35K feet, its -60 degrees before factoring in windchill.

The Zeppelins main problem was that they were having to fly into the wind on the way to the target as the winds over England were predominantly westerlies, i.e. coming from the west. And they had to do this while carrying a full bombload and still with much of its fuel all of which hampered them in trying to reach London. This often meant that the airships had to either divert to secondary targets or return home. This was less problematic for German bombers which meant they were more successful at reaching their targets. Many of the lessons learnt from these raids would be put into practise during WW2, especially the Battle of Britain. As an example the Royal Observer Corps which was set up in 1925 and played a very important part in the Battle of Britain in spotting and keeping track of the German raiders was based on observer groups used during WW1.

The British gave the only HP O/100 in the Middle East to the Australian Flying Corps, the organization that post WWI provided the basis for the Royal Australian Air Force. If my memory serves, the Brits sent experts over to Germany after World War I to figure out what affects the strategic bombing had had, and found out that more casualties were caused by anti-aircraft shrapnel falling to the ground than by bombs.

Very good video - informative and enjoyable (German won in the east and took more from Russia than they had hoped Feb 1918 They then sent troops to the Western front - with mixed results, good then bad. The sudden collapse of Germany came as a huge shock 4 Nov a revolution in Berlin removed the Kaiser. That was after Ludendorf had had a nervous breakdown, asked for an armistice, then changed his mind : that was a catalysts which ignited discontent)

Footage call: What I THINK is a Handley Page Type O (or maybe a German Gotha bomber) is shown in Batman: The Animated Series S03E10 "Harleyquinade". Joker uses it to try fly away after setting a nuke to - you guessed it! - blow up Gotham. Harley objects on account the bomb would blow up her pet hyenas along with everyone else. She helps Batman stop him, but not before Joker makes an admirable attempt to blow the nuke up by making several attack runs with normal bombs and MG fire from the Handley's observer gun-ring.
