I'd love to get a bit more of Rita's backstory--she and the other Marthas undoubtedly have their own share of stories to tell about Gilead!

My best guess is that we will see it in season 5. Hopefully. Given that she said in season 1 that her son died in the "second crusades" (Gilead's civil war with the former America), I have a feeling that she willingly accepted Gilead but grew disenchanted with it as time went on. I honestly think she was somewhat high-ranking with her son as an "Angel" (or Guardian) and that her son's death demoted her since she had no male kin to make choices for her. Rita's backstory is a mystery at this point but I hope that they give us a glimpse into it soon.

@@Dank951 I thought it was mentioned by Rita that her son had fought on the American side when she said this, right (refer to 1x08)?

@@Dank951 It's been heavily implied, and possibly even said out loud that Rita's son died fighting against Gilead, not for them.

This scene and the one were Emily hands Nichole to June were the higlights of this episode. I mean all of it was so dark that I rather grab to the few scenes that show at least a very little sight of light.

Rita needs to give up using the Gilead phrases. We don't do that in Canada.

I disagree. If she's always been a devout Christian, it could be part of her identity. Or if not, then she's still adjusting in her own time.

@@FranMSK she was advised to keep using Gileadean phrases around people who are transitioning back into normalcy. A couple episodes ago Rita was staring at her take-out like…what is this??? It’s all about context. Almost like, here’s what it was and is now juxtaposed. Sometimes we find comfort in what we are used to - Trust me we are all going to feel that roller coaster over the course of the next year when WE get back to normal after this pandemic with ditching masks and physical closeness and dealing with people on the opposite sides…we are more divided than ever…
