This was the hardest cave trip that has ever been, or will ever be.

This is a slight re-edit of my original version of this video. The JFK Moon speech very well expresses the challenges and emotions cave explorers feel when exploring new frontiers underground. Cavers often draw correlations between themselves and astronauts.

It's incredible how moving Kennedy's speeches are to this day. We need an intelligent and articulate leader. "...not because it is easy. But because it is hard." May this American spirit rise in all of us.

Haha! Let's just hope we never ditch cave exploration like we did space exploration.

hardly much to explore in space right now with the technology we have, I'm sure in 150-200 years from now its going to be a driving force behind humanity with along asteroid mining and sophisticated AI.

@@DerekBristol .....with, as you well know, an amazing story of exploration. Herb and Jan Conn's book "The Jewel Cave Adventure" is a wonderful read. You would probably really enjoy it, MinisterC, and the coolest part is that the adventure is obviously far from over. Thanks again for another video triumph, Derek.

Would you be willing to list some of the equipment used? Maybe include details on lighting and quantity of batteries used. I always felt like I was exploring the surface of another planet while caving. Great video.

Cool cave video as always! What was the water sample for? Was that the point of the trip?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 4 жыл бұрын
The water sample was a side-project. Setting up the camp was the main objective. The sample is part of an effort to study the microbiology of the series of new lakes that have been discovered in the SW part of Jewel Cave.
@jordanburgess38
@jordanburgess38 4 жыл бұрын
@@DerekBristol that's cool. I'm particularly interested in studying microbiology myself, that's why I was curious. I'm trying to coordinate doing some undergraduate research with Dr. Hazel Barton over the summer. We would take a trip to Lechuguilla cave and stay in for 8 days. Given that very few people are allowed in the cave, I'm trying to make this happen

Since you carry all your equipment in your bags each trip, what does "setting up the camp" actually entail?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 4 жыл бұрын
Jewel Cave has 4 established camps. These are left stocked with tarps, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and stoves. We then only need to carry a sleeping bag liner, clothes, stove fuel and food.

Probably a similar temperature. Jewel Cave is about 49F, but it's dry and the travel is very physical, so we are more comfortable in synthetic t-shirts than we would be in nylon caving suits.

True. You probably have to really love caves to want to take a tour there, because it's like Mammoth and won't blow you away with tons of flowstone, etc, but if you're just a casual cave fan who wants to be visually dazzled, Carlsbad Caverns should be on your list of ultimate underground vacation destinations.
