Imagine if one day chess becomes a solved game and they make a puzzle that’s just the starting position.

I want to see Hikaru making arrows on the second puzzle!

I feel like if I had several hours (maybe a day) I could solve that first puzzle just through brute force calculation since there's a relatively limited number of variations given the remaining pieces and situation. That second puzzle, though, is something I don't know if I'd ever be able to solve. Too many possible movies that look like they're winning only to find out they're not because of some hard-to-see response, combined with a very counter-intuitive "computer-like" move to cap it off. Still, the logic is very pretty, just incredibly complex and way above my 1700 ELO paygrade.

Second one felt more like a "position" than a "puzzle", if you know what I mean. As Sam said, it's not the kind of thing you really figure out ahead of time step-by-step. You just keep reacting and trying to find the best move. (I did not find the best move each time, obviously). First one wasn't that bad. Just had to figure out which Queen check was right and why. There weren't that many options.

First-class explanation, Mr. Copeland! This was very instructive--reminding us to look for quiet moves, to consider _all_ legal responses of our opponent, to not be greedy and cash in early while attacking, and to stifle our opponent's counterplay.

9. Qxh8 - Stockfish 12 -at depth 42 evaluates postion to be a mate in 31 moves ! That means is a mate in 40 puzzle

I actually found this mate in 4 after about 10-15 minutes of thinking. But the last position is just a nightmare

The first one was inutuitive and easy but the second one was quite impossible

Lesson in first puzzle reminded me of a simple clear memory of a roommate hollering frustration playing on FICS in the mid 90s. Dan: “I can’t figure out how to keep my tempo and looks like big problems” me: “gotta quiet move?” Dan “thanks!”

By 3:53 you can play rook on f5. Only the pawn will be able to take the rook. After pawn takes, you play queen on g7. King only can move to h5 and than it’s pawn checkmate. Beautiful rooksec.

I found the king to G4 from the start so I think I'm a GM LOL 😂😹

That second one doesn't look like a puzzle - it looks like the analysis of a Fischer or Morphy game lmao. The epitome of "when you see a good move, look for better."

I found Qf7+ (I just saw it before Qf5+), but was too lazy to calculate till the end and just watched the video

Well, exactly as you said it, thought I found forced mate in puzzle 1, pawn move tripped me up

So in the 2nd puzzle, after 1.Nd6+, Black presumably has choices in where he moves his king - either to f8, d8, or (as discussed in the puzzle) e7. Also after 2. Nxe5, it is not clear why black is forced to take KxNd6.

Huge difference between the two puzzles in difficulty

The second puzzle was already impossible and then finding out that the killer move was the silent rook blocking in the counterplay of the queen makes it literally impossible

For the second one I thought the exact way he did recommend not to go for.

5:49 OH yes... I remember this puzzle. I needed one hint but besides that found it quite enjoyable and a breeze

first puzzle is trippy in deed. i spent 5 min looking at it and didn't even notice first check available. that said the ideas after you see that check are fairly simple. its some sort of square blindness

The first puzzle took me 40 mins to solve but after I solved it,it looked quite simple, you just needed to calculate 3-4 candidates and all of them were logical moves.

I literally solved the first one, including the quiet move. Theres no way this is the hardest puzzle. Guys like Hikaru could solve this in 10-20 seconds probably, at most. I am rated 1100 btw which is reallly low. So I am really surprised this was here.

first one :- g4+ Kh6 g5 Kxg5 Qg4# Three moves!!! And if -: g4+ Kg6 Qf5# Two moves!!!

I thought pg4 was the move because if kh6 then qe5 defending mate and also threating mate in one but missed that he had pg6

I found all moves until the quite move at the very end. I thought about moving my king closer... But at the very beginning I missplaced the black rook, it was on E2. And with this the quite move leads to forced checkmate by black. Damn. I still have the second puzzle though, I'll try to solve it later

The second one is just a game position. It's a puzzle in the sense that all chess games are chess puzzles.

First time I've seen the first one I thought it's easy but trying to do it after few days with little bit of memory got lured by all wrongs paths & it's gonna happen to many if faced in puzzle rush.

At 2:27, isn't it over ? If white moves pawn to g5 check, I only see 2 possible moves for black. King g7 and king h5. On king G7, you have rook f7, leaving the enemy king to go to h8 or g8. H8 is mate in 1 due to queen c8. G8 is mate in 2 with queen e6, queen c8. As for h5, you have g4 checkmate in 1

so its an equal position at the end?

Can the second one even be considered a puzzle given the sheer number of possible moves?

1st one should be rated around 2000-3000. It's way too easy

First one is super easy if you assume it's blacks move :)

This was a super simple puzzle. If I didn't miss g6 pawn check I would have eventually find Kg4.

I feel like the first puzzle is too easy to be the "one of the hardest puzzles" (2100)
