Awesome Vid, thanks for the shout out! Your examples were fantastic. This will help new players a great deal! The only clarification I'd like to add is for your "Protector of Lorien" + "Doom, Doom, Doom" example around 19:50. The concept was spot on and existing as a hypothetical it does illustrate the point well. However, abilities that use "until the end of the phase" actually can't technically exist at all "at" the end of the phase. They wouldn't even be able to be triggered since they can't change the game state and are "N/A" so to speak. So this is why we can't use Protector in the situation of Doom, Doom, Doom or the end of the phase locate test during "The Dead Marshes" 1B. The concept is spot on but the examples I prefer to use are spirit Frodo and spirit Dain. This is because it's actually possible for these abilities to exist in the "at the end of the phase" limbo between phases. They don't use the word "until" but still have limits charged to the next phase if used in limbo. Once you are "at" an "until" lasting effect can't even exist until a new phase starts.

It really is so much deeper than I expected when I started learning, and even before I started making the videos - so many corner cases and card interactions to consider, it's mind-boggling! I had to pull from the FAQ and designer posts on the forums to get a full picture, and even then I wasn't able to cover everything in the Rules Reference because of how incredibly detailed and specific the language is in there.

This is the best LOTR LCG tutorial series! Some of the rules I think I will play wrong intentionally, as it makes the game a bit easier. Like lasting trechery effects (resolve "when revealed" and forget about the card ;), "at" and "in" phase ("at" always last thing to play in the phase, not outside) etc. ;) but I'll see how it goes. I know it is the last part but I would love to see some other LOTR content. Thank you for the amazing job!

Thank you again for taking time to make these! I think I learned more from this one than the other ones. There was so much that I had no idea about or didn't think of! I didn't catch that effects with "then" have to have everything before that completed in order to perform the effect. Or that actions that attack an enemy don't count towards your one attack against an enemy. That does make Haldir more interesting. And wow encounter "until" card effects affect everything played after that?! Well I have been doing that wrong then. I thought those whiffs were too generous. And "until" effects expiring before "at" effects begin I didn't know. And the timings for post-questing I didn't know, and that changes things. The once per game limit being a player limit is interesting and I never would have guessed that! And the timing for ability resolutions I didn't know either. And "when" effects happening before "after" effects when they activate during the same time I didn't know. It's good to know the couple situations where you need to shuffle the encounter deck during the questing phase before it empties. So if a card were to instruct you to look at the top specific number of cards and you didn't have that many left, you would shuffle the discard pile back into the encounter deck and then resolve the effect? The whole ability charge thing I didn't know either and makes certain cards more annoying. I didn't notice that Quick Strike works against enemies that are immune to player card effects! I didn't think of using tactic hero Legolas and Blade of Gondolin in that situation to add the last quest counter and then 2 on the next quest! Some of these odd situations are very funny, and I'm glad when people point these out! I've never thought of the Gandalf and Erebor Guard! That is a very funny one and is good to know! I have wondered about the situation where you play Host of Galadhrim with Galadhrim Weaver in your discard pile, so thank you especially for that one! I play sylvian elves more than anything else. There were a few other little things that I didn't know, but there were more things I didn't know than did I think, so it's a very good thing I saw this! The more of these videos in this series I watched, the more things I find that I have been doing wrong or didn't know and the more I realize that the game is even more complex than I thought. I thought Mtg was complex, and this game was comparable to it at first, but at this point I'd say this game is more complex. But wow it's a very good thing I saw this early on just about a year and a half after I got my core set before playing too much of this game because it would be even more painful finding out that I have been doing so many things wrong for a long time and not having a true victory on the scenarios! Thank you! Also, I went to check out the White Tower Watchman, and I have seen one of his videos before in the past! It was the one on active location quest card progress. I think I found it when looking up for answers for a situation that came up during a quest one time. I don't remember when or which one it was.

Glad you learned some new things, I certainly did in making this series :). To answer your question: "So if a card were to instruct you to look at the top specific number of cards and you didn't have that many left, you would shuffle the discard pile back into the encounter deck and then resolve the effect?" I believe the answer is yes, you'd need to reset the encounter deck so you can finish resolving the staging of the card. Cheers!

Great - Great - Coverage for everyone but I think especially for intermediates trying to better understand advanced issues like me. I have been going over this video multiple times in digesting all of the meat. I only wish that you left the example cards on the screen a few seconds longer so they could be thoroughly absorbed and helped in that digestion. But then again that is why we have the pause button :) While still in the study mode I have something to add and a card question (Adding words to your immediate attack segment) When drawing an immediate attack in the quest phase the enemy drawn is not yet in staging but is in a transition state therefore none of the player card effects on enemies in staging can be applied. (The Card Question) Breaking Of The Fellowship - Location - Slopes Of Amon Hen, Forest Hills - "A player at this staging area engages 1 enemy in any staging area to travel here". (Question) - if there are no enemies anywhere can I still travel there? There isn't a prefix or additional words that state the player has to have an enemy available before traveling here thus my question. Same Location But Now Referencing Quest 1b that states "Enemies get +2 defense and cannot be engaged. Skip the encounter phase" (Question) - if there IS an enemy or enemies in staging, can I still travel to Forest Hills and not engage the enemy as this quest phase requires? Thank you for all of the difficult work that I'm sure was involved in making this complex and much appreciated video.
@TheGameLocker
@TheGameLocker 6 ай бұрын
So glad you found it helpful! For that Slopes of Amon Hen location, that’s a travel cost (denoted by the “Travel:” prefix). If you can’t pay that cost, you can’t travel there. So if you’re at stage 1B that location would sit in the staging area until you advance and can pay that travel cost. That constant ability that prevents enemies from being engaged is always active and can’t be overruled by attempting to pay a travel cost. Hope that helps!

This is a great 3 part series that showcases the game and its rules. I have been looking to get into a really challenging deck building solo game and did some research after watching your videos. My major concern is that experienced players have come up with decks that are able to win all quests on nightmare difficulty in 1 attempt. I have also seen sacrificial decks in multiplayer that trivialize the challenge and essentially break the game. I checked to see if the revised core edition would tone down the power level of specific cards that enabled decks to break the game, but it seems this isn't the case. Can you confirm that this is true and the game has been "beaten"?
@TheGameLocker
@TheGameLocker 6 ай бұрын
Hi there! In my opinion, the existence of some overpowered cards or broken combos are really only a concern for competitive card games. Since this is a cooperative card game, the goal is just to have fun! And the game is HARD, so you’re gonna need all the help you can get. There are lots of ways to approach this game. Some players approach this game with a primary love for the theme, and a desire to build really thematic, story-driven decks. Others approach this game from a purely technical, mechanics-driven perspective with a goal to build the strongest decks possible. But no matter your approach, nobody plays this game with just one kind of deck. That’s boring. There are SO many cards in this game that after 10 years of development there is a limitless variety of decks you can try to build. Building a “one deck to rule them all” might be a fun challenge for some, but it’s not really what this game is about. Yes, I’ve seen those decks, but I don’t play with them. That doesn’t sound fun to me personally to just play one deck. And if that is truly a concern for you still, I have some recommendations for you: 1) do not look at decks other people build - challenge yourself to build strong decks and discover the strong combos yourself. The discovery half the fun! 2) if you come across a deck or a combo that you feel is making the game too easy, challenge yourself by restricting your deckbuilding; don’t use a certain card or combo if you feel it trivializes the game for you! There are not many solo-able deck construction games, but this is definitely one of the best. Oh and note that the revised/repackaged expansions coming out do not change/rebalance any of the cards. It’s not a 2nd edition, it’s just a repackaging of the old content to make it easier (and cheaper) to buy. Cheers!

I really enjoyed your videos. I ignored it's initial release after being annoyed by its nickel and dime release of Descent 2. I fell so in love with that game, I grabbed what I could get. Got most of the campaign addons etc, but nobody to play with... 'oh, well not a fan of apps with boardgames, but let's try it out'. First play actually was pretty exciting since so many things happened in the app which you don't see much in a usual boardgames ... . Anyhoo tl:dr; I finally got to the boss ... with everything in miniatures distinguished even between regular or elite ... facing the Big Baddy -> it's just a pathetic piece of carton.. and the first enemy I had no mini for. .... That was pretty much the reason why I either went all-in in most stuff (or felt like I'd miss stuff for NOT, even though the plastic doesn't seem to be that useful and also the reason I _REALLY_ started to hate DLC.

After exhausting all other attempts at an answer I'm "forced" to come back to the guru :) I hope you don't mind. By the way my wife just told me tonight that I've gotten more than my money's worth out of this game now two years going. That's still an understatement to be sure! My question has to do with the word "AT" in the Two Towers Urak-Hai and Grishnakh. The card says "Forced At the end of the quest phase, deal 1 damage to the attached Captive". If so, then a 2 hit point captive hero would be eliminated after the quest phase in the very next round. Reading from the Visions of The Palantir he indicates two rounds before this captive is killed (Merry was my choice) but I'm thinking he'll be gone after the quest phase in the next round. I guess that one can potentially heal the hero in this and in every additional round as an alternative until gathering the strength to dispatch Grishnakh. I'd also be interested to hear how you have dealt with this Orc who can be worse then Ugluk since at least you can plan for the latter. Generally I think my question can be stated as to whether the word "at" occurs just before or just after the end of a phase.
@TheGameLocker
@TheGameLocker 2 ай бұрын
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - was having trouble finding your comment for some odd reason! I believe "at" the end of a phase is really the last thing that happens before moving onto the next phase. So a 2 hit point captive would last 2 quest phases.
@cjs6070
@cjs6070 2 ай бұрын
@@TheGameLocker ah, I think what you've stated is that "at" occurs after the "quest resolution" step is over. I've been playing the quest since I wrote and Grishnakh came up during one of the plays. Much to my surprise I was able to dispatch him in the very round that he appeared - just lucky that I had the right cards to do so. Thank you for getting back to me on this.

Question for clarification: removing progress from the quest targets quests but not locations, but what about player side quests?
@TheGameLocker
@TheGameLocker 6 ай бұрын
Side quests are considered quest cards, but some effects that target quests are worded differently. Some cards target the "main quest", which never touch side quests. The two I mentioned in the video (Misty Mountain Goblins and Despair) target the "current quest". For side quests you can choose it to be the "current quest" at the beginning of the quest phase, but when the quest phase ends it is no longer considered the current quest. So Misty Mountain Goblins would never hit a side quest since a side quest would never be 'current' in the combat phase, but Despair would if it's the current quest. Hope that helps!

Thx for the great video! I have a question: when i attack an enemy with a character that has the dwarrowdelf axe equiped, at which step in my attack does the 1 point damage resolve? Before damage calculation (=after declaring the attack) or after the damage calculation?
@TheGameLocker
@TheGameLocker 5 ай бұрын
It's debated. Based on what I can see online, I believe it happens after resolving the attack, after the damage calculation. There are other card effects in this game that read "after the attached character is declared as an attacker", which happen before calculating damage. Granted, this is an older card, but that's my take.
