Great ideas here. The mark of success for me is when my paintings looks good after squinting my eyes! The thing I love most about watercolor is that I don't HAVE to be detailed, and I can be "done" whenever I want :)

Measure twice, cut once and the Kiss method combined. Highly logical, especially if you wanted to do a detail subject in the foreground with supporting scenery.

These tips are wonderful. Anything on how to keep going through the ugly phase? I rip up too many projects when I get to that point because I can not see to an end result. It may be simplifying the composition will work.

I agree with you 100%. The ugly middle stage is such a challenge. A few things that help me. 1) Don't freak out or get frustrated and do something rash. Stay calm. :-) 2) Take a break and come back later with fresh eyes. 3) Hold it up to a mirror to see if you can see something that can be improved. 4) Be bold and add some dark DARKS in a few key areas. I find this contrast can really help a weak painting.
