Here is “the netsuke book”, (see video for this to make sense!) in which celebrated potter Edmund de Waal traces the path of these small carved Japanese objects through his family, while imparting a gripping history of 20th-century Europe.
I try to unpick what the netsuke mean to each member of the family in turn, and read out the astonishing moment of their hiding with Anna.
