I work for a Big Tech company and can 100% agree with these points. I'm fortunate enough that the company I work for aligns with my actual interests and goals, but I am still stuck in the wrong department, and I feel kind of empty. I don't plan on leaving, but I'm working on getting the skills I need to make an internal move to the teams that are doing the work I'm interested in. Great video, I appreciate the honesty and self-reflection!

Thank you for this. I recently decided to join a bank as an engineer and somebody asked me why it’s not worth it and I should have aimed for a tech company! I hadn’t until that second thought it was a bad decision 🥺

I think the craze for the Big Tech is just for the big fat paycheck. If you are going to do the same four letter WORK everywhere, people would rather do that for deeper pockets. I am not personally FAANG frenzy but the paycheck does make a huge difference in our lifestyle.

Great video! In our area, too much importance is given to Big Tech Companies. There are good challenges in many companies, regardless of their size.

I really appreciate what he's saying. And he's correct about the advantage of not having to wait weeks to push updates into production and being able to accomplish more in a quicker time frame at a smaller company then a bigger company. Which makes it nice in that sense. However I think the big question at the end of the day that we all want answered is the question about SALARY. Smaller companies don't have the resources to pay you as much as Google or Amazon pays their Devs. So it comes down to the fact that we're all there to do a job for 8-10 hours a day; if it were ME, I'd want to be paid as much as possible for the hours I work. Just me though. That outweighs everything. And you'll find that at any FAANG company. So I appreciate what he's saying but again, a ton of people would kill to have his job at Google. If he doesn't want it, I'll take it! 😂

Your videos always help me verify my weird philosophies! Like I wanted to start preparing for tech giant companies but I've paused that goal. My goal is to be a full-stack developer right now. I just want to have enough power to build MVPs for myself. Sounds crazy? Sounds right? Let me know what any of you reading this think of it!

As someone who is just getting into tech, i am really overwhelmed by the options like front end , backend , ui ux , ai ml , cloud , devops , PM etc . Its impossible to go and try all of these . Do you have any solution Kevin ? How did you decide your specialization ?
@KevinNaughtonJr

yes it can def be overwhelming. my advice would be to follow what you're interested in! if you don't know what you're interested in, try a couple and see what does piques your interest. remember you can always change your mind good luck! :)

Do you now think that you should have chosen Uber instead of Google? Choosing Uber would have given you more impactful work and less of the processes that you mentioned about? ( asking because I too have to decide between Uber and Google :P)

I think I was hyped into wanting to work for a big company but then I thought about my dream and focus and working at a big company just makes even more sense for me , I want to know what its like being in a big scale production and big scale innovation because i want to start a huge company of that scale myself, and fastest way imo is to be on the shoulders of giants. But I can clearly see thats not everyone's focus or goals to do so. Many people just want a great job and happy balance which makes sense to want but I think the misinformation and false hype from word of mouth made people association the branding that FAANG companies is like the 'american dream' if you get the job which isn't always true, anyways I like all your advice and perspectives! I look forward to your future videos and I will keep continuing to pursue google to see for myself! wish me luck yall 😬

Whats your suggestion to someone just getting into coding and is overwhelmed by all this Ai news also is web dev worth pursuing? whats the best field to focus on in your opinion? Sorry for the long question
@KevinNaughtonJr
@KevinNaughtonJr Жыл бұрын
find what topic/part of software engineering interests you and start building. literally just google things that you're interested in ("how to build a website with python"). most people fail in my opinion because they get paralysis. there's no "best" place to start, just start. i think web dev is worth pursuing if it interests you. the "best" field imo is again the one you enjoy the most/find the most interesting

Working in big tech is a stepping stone. It shows employers at a smaller company that you rose to the challenge and are of the top 1% achievers. For anyone that says they regret working in big tech: no you don’t. What you did is now launching your career in way of small company recruiters endlessly hitting your DMs. Endless opportunity and miles ahead of any other developer that has only worked at a smaller(less well known) company. Recognize this earned privilege because you don’t see others that are STRUGGLING to find jobs.
