I love the detail when Warren says "You didn't count on the two of us" he points at Manicks and himself, both of them wearing the south and the north uniforms working together for the first time.

Given how nice Minnie is to everyone in the flashback, I don't think Warren was telling the truth. I think he's racist against Latinos and just wanted to kill bad guy Bob/Marco first.

that guitar was an antique and one of a kind, worth tons of money. it was loaned to the production. Jennifer knew this. it was supposed to be switched out before it was smashed. Kurt did not know this. her reaction to the smashing of the guitar was a true reaction to the expenaive antique being destroyed. it was left in the film. once you know the story, you see how her reaction didn't really fit the scene.

Martin guitar from the 1880s, 150 years old. It was a $40,000 guitar, and a piece on loan from the Martin museum. In reality it was priceless.

this is one of the best Tarantino movies, the performances, the dialogue, the directing, the cinematography, the music, just brilliant, you get your typical Tarantino craziness in it too but its not the focal point, amazing piece of work :)

Seeing this in theaters on Christmas in 70mm was the best experience I ever had. Prebooked and assigned seats that were uber comfortable, hot coffee and pastries brought straight to you and the movie shown in two parts with a break in between so you could stretch and discuss the movie with others. We also got some goody bag with cards bout the characters and an autographed poster. It was really awesome

People do usually consider this as a spiritual sequel to The Thing apparently, and some Hateful Eight immediately after it. So, you're not alone with that.

The music from the thing at 34:48 was used in this movie as well one part of the soundtrack is heard during the slow mo scene with Sam Jackson trying to shoot daisy. This music is also used when they find the space ship in the thing.

this movie grew on me over time. The Netflix episodic extended version put it over the top for me. I think that's the version that people need to see. it's so good.

Jennifer Jason Leigh's reaction when he smashed the guitar was genuine. That was about 150 years old, they were supposed to switch it out with a replica for him to smash. Tragic.

I always loved how through small talk Domergue gives information to her gang and Jody once she's in the haberdashery. Then when they cut to the gang first showing up you see all the little details mentioned at the start.

22:19 "That was a change." I noticed that too when watching it. It was like way out of character for her to care about the guitar... but... in real life that was a priceless vintage Martin from the 1800s and Kurt Russell just didn't realize it, so she was actually visibly shaken out of character for that reason. And now Martin will never donate another guitar for a movie to use.

Tarantino insisted on filming this with the old fashion 70MM film stock camera not digital which Hollywood had been using for years. His love of old movies also lead him to use veteran film Composer Ennio Morricone who won his only film score Oscar win in his long career. He was given an Honorary Lifetime Oscar also.

The movie was HIGHLY inspired by John Carpenter's The Thing. Even the score was by Ennio Morricone who scored that film and they used some of The Thing's actual score while they were vomiting from being poisoned and also trying to cut a deal with Samuel L Jackson.

In this score Morricone shows his gorgeous love and admiration for Igor Stravinsky. There are beautiful and well constructed melodic referrences like the beginning of the Psalms Symphony fugue and berceuse from Firebird. I'm so happy he won the Oscar with this music because Tarantino let him free to let his classical background from accademic studies to explode.

Fun fact guys, the music was originally made for the movie The Thing but they were scrapped and Tarantino asked Ennio Morricone if he could use that unused soundtrack for this movie. Also Kurt Russell also was in The Thing and the plot is similar with people being suspicious of one another in a secluded place filled with snow. Tarantino said The Thing was an inspiration for this movie. Another fun fact this was supposed to be a Django sequel with Django just stumbling into this whole scenario but he took him off the script because he didn't want the audience to resonate with a character or have a "good guy" in the movie, your supposed to hate all of them they're all horrible people lol

Enjoyed you guys reaction. Daisy was portrayed by actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. For her role as Daisy she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She's been in many movies over the years. If you saw 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High she played a teenager who got pregnant in High school. Her career took off after that.

Excellent, this is a great movie. Don't forget about "Once Upon A Time in the West" which is the best of the Sergio Leone westerns IMO and is preserved in the Library of Congress. Tarantino loved and was definitely influenced by the Leone westerns. Thank you.

I drove three hours to a theater that was set up specifically for a special 70mm showing. For those that don't know, prior to digital projection, movies recorded on film were shown in theaters in either 35mm or 70mm format. 70mm was basically the IMAX of it's day. The screen was a little wider but not as high. Tarantino made this movie in 70mm, because it was his favorite format when he was younger. The film textures, color and grain was simply gorgeous on the screen.

Samuel L. Jackson's character probably knew about the basement, but just didn't figure on Jody hiding down there. He didn't leave any evidence he had been in the building with the others.

So many people (including myself) didn't catch this the first time around but Django's saddle is on top of the bodies Warren has piled on his horse! Some people think Warren killed Django and others (myself included) thought that Django's riding days were over and he gifted it to him!

A small detail I liked about the movie: Everyone is going just by Daisy's name as its written, its not until they hear her pronounce it correctly, that they know who she is and why these guys would want to free her.

Love this movie! Probably Tarantino's most underrated film. Love the tension, mystery and playlike structure of the movie. The 70mm roadshow version I saw in the theater when it came out was one of the most fun moviegoing experiences ever.

Saw this in 70mm with a film meetup group at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, Ca. Full house, huge screen, everything AWESOME. Watching this with you guys was even better! Great critique/discussion after and ya'll hit all the notes and points. I watch a lot of reactors but seem to be settling in to which types of movies I like to watch with who. You guys are my goto for movies like this; expansive and more involving flicks to be discussed over drinks afterwards. Mentioned earlier that I used to see movies like this with a meetup group but ya'll pretty much took over that role. You're also both of the nicest people I've ever seen doing this. Looking forward to the next one! Peace out and stay cool!

I can remember the first time watching this with my wife, the crew gets to Minnie's and my wife says: "So they brave the storm in a Cracker Barrel?" 😆 Out of all the performances, Walton Goggins surprised me. Only knew him from The Shield and random TV show appearances.

I saw this as a matinee at the The Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on December 24, 2015. I brought my kids so they would be scarred for life and it worked. It was wonderful.

Daisy Domergue`s last name I believe was inspired by Faith Domergue. She was popular actress in Sci-Fi films in the 50`s. Tarantino is a pop-culture encyclopedia. This is My favorite Tarantino film. It`s a masterpiece of writing & acting.

Tarantino wanted that huge and wide screen (Panavision) look to the film, like the great Western filmakers such as John Houston used. He found the huge cameras they used in storage and had them restored and film made to fit them so he could shoot in the same style.

I saw the roadshow version in theaters. It was basically a music overture lasting a few minutes before the movie starts, and a 15 minute interlude halfway through the movie like the old long epic movies from the 50s/60s so that the audience could get up and stretch or go to the bathroom before the movie continued.

Nominated for 3 Oscars Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Jason Leigh Best Cinematography Best Original Score. It won the latter, ad Ennio Morricome was the oldest composer to win at 86. He passed away last year at 93.

I’ll just add one more thing. Bruce Dern. That guy adds so much to any movie. Even when a movie just doesn’t do it for you, you know that the part Bruce plays going to be good. He has stage presence. He is always a little bit off. Great character actor.

I like that one write up called this "The Bad And The Ugly" - not as a criticism on the quality of the movie but as commentary on the characters and as a reference to the classic Eastwood/Leone western "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly."

@21:35 fun fact, pulling focus is 1 specific persons job in during filming (1 per camera). The cam op holds/controls the camera, the AC (1st AC, 2nd AC, etc) pulls the focus. They do it with a little device a little larger than an iphone with a little wheel for each lense, that adjusts the focus based on mms.

Hey you two! Even though this isn't one of my favorite Tarantino films, I still enjoyed it quite a bit, and, of course, enjoyed your commentary as well. Also, the acting was entertaining as ever, with a lot of our Tarantino regulars re-emerging. I know that you two recognized Zoe, Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, etcetera, and I'm pretty sure you caught Tim Roth (Pumpkin from Pulp Fiction/ Mr. Orange from Resevoir Dogs/ Four Rooms/ and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) in this one. As for Jennifer Jason Leigh, she's been in quite a few BIG movies over the years, though the one that you probably recognized her from was Road To Perdition which you two viewed about a month ago. (Yeah, she was Annie Sullivan, Tom Hank's Wife who didn't last long ;^) But anyway, she is a virtual chameleon in her various roles, which you'll notice whenever you watch Fast Times At Ridgemont High and others. Just For The Record: She's also in my third favorite Coen Brother's movie: The Hudsucker Proxy. My Top Two Coen Bros movies being: O' Brother Where Art Thou (which really should have won Best Picture), and Fargo, of course. Thanks for all the great reactions. . . Keep up the great work. Mateo

Seeing JJL break character when Kurt smashed the guitar is such a bloody strange moment. When I first watched the movie I had no idea that the guitar was a museum piece. I have a hard time believing that a guitar like that would have been on loan when replicas had been made for just this scene. However, I wasn't there, so I don't know.

Also the old man says earlier in the film " My son came up here for his fortune" so it actually proves that his son rly did try to kill warren for the bounty money and warren rly killed him but who knows if he did what he said he did to kill him . I think its pretty safe to say he was telling the truth. Also the dialogue in the beginning of the film was great.

For those of us who came up in the 80's we will always remember Jennifer Jason Leigh as a fresh faced girl next door beauty/cutie, good to see her again and in such a different kind of role knocking it out of the park, look her up in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

I first viewed this film about eight years ago. All I remember of it was that it involved several characters, who were all suspicious of each other and that in the end almost all of them were dead. But that is usually the MO of Tarantino, everyone dies! This reminds me of a similar film that was released in 1965, 'Ten Little Indians!'

Kurt Russell really actually destroyed a priceless 145-year-old Martin acoustic guitar. He thought it was a prop look alike for the scene where he snatches it and smashes it and actually destroyed the real one. When Daisy started yelling "NO NO NO" when he snatched it that was her true reaction to him smashing the priceless one.

I think the extended version is a masterpiece. There’s something incredible about the main 8 characters and how Tarantino has said they are like the guest stars in old Western television shows. I love Kurt Russell. I love this channel.

I didn't appreciate this movie as much till I saw it with Tarantino. He was laughing out loud throughout, indicating that it's an outright comedy. Really fun movie!

@@josephirizarry5195 Unfortunately no, man! It was in LA. We also watched Death Proof, Kill Bill 2, and Once Upon together. He attended the Django screening too, but I missed that one. We chatted a couple times in the lobby. He's a friendly dude. I always wanted to see a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse. I've heard such cool things about that place! Sounds like an absolute blast!

This movie is really good, but I have the same complaint for it as I do Django and, to a lesser extent, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I wish that QT had not blended in as much gross-out exploitation to it. It has a lot of parts that are shock value just to be schlocky, and I think that holds it back. I think QT has gone a bit downhill in this regard since Inglourious Basterds. The schlockiness made sense in Kill Bill, but in his more recent work I think it has taken away from the rest. In all other respects, it is a masterpiece. It builds tension incredibly well.

If you've seen any spaghetti westers you'll realize that this is right on the money with the blood and guts galore. This is an amazing spaghetti western and the only real western to come after Unforgiven.

@@hangemhigh113 not really. Leone's films, for example, aren't like this at all, and neither is the original Django. They are violent, but not over the top with gore. This also definitely is not a spaghetti western even though it pays homage to them- it's not filmed in Europe, and the dialogue is all in original English rather than Italian.

The Major's story starts shortly after his argument with the Hangman of the Lincoln Letter and his use of lies for survival. I always interpreted this as a pointed demonstration of how he can use lies to achieve his ends. He effectively gets away with murdering the General by provoking him into pulling a gun first, making it a legal act of self-defense. Plus, he's thoroughly pragmatic, not bothering taking bounties alive for a higher reward because it makes the job harder, so slowly torturing his enemy seems like a lot of wasted time and effort. I really think he fabricated his story purely to kill the General, and expected the Hangman to get the message that lies are part of his arsenal and he uses whatever he needs to.
