The Head Of The 9 Day Queen's Father - Sir Henry Grey

Throughout the Tudor period, there were many men and women who lost their heads after being accused of treason. One Queen who lost her head inside of the Tower of London was the 9 Day Queen Lady Jane Grey. Following the death of Henry VIII’s successor Edward VI, Jane was named Queen as the previous King wanted a strong protestant monarch. But Jane would be deposed a number of days later as Mary I managed to oust her. Mary was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII, and was probably the rightful successor and Queen, however she then sought to punish those who had been behind Lady Jane Grey’s accession to the throne. There were a number of executions which were ordered, and one man who lost his head was the father of Jane, Sir Henry Grey the 1st Duke of Suffolk. On the 23rd February 1554 on Tower Hill, an axeman took his head off but this would not be the end for his head which hundreds of years later would be discovered having been smuggled out of the Tower of London.

I was a pupil at Sir John Cass Foundation School, Aldgate. St Botolphs was the school’s church. In the 1950s, my class was shown the head you refer to. School children later were disappointed to not see it as it was buried. Kids like a good gruesome. However, seeing the head made history really Real to my class mates and I

The most unfortunate Mary l, seemed to have an extremely lonely life. While she was forced to sign a document saying she was illegitimate, and not being able to have her mother in her life; among other indignaties she suffered. Her father, Henry Vlll had six wives, and she couldn't have one husband while she was still young. That would make anyone hateful. She had everything, and nothing at the sametime.

Tower Hill is not in the Tower of London but across the moat next to what is now the Tower Hill Tube station. The reason the female Tudors/spouses were executed inside the Tower was to preserve some semblance of decorum for the women. Men apparently didn't need decorum so their deaths could be a public spectacle. This means that getting the probable Duke of Suffolk's head to Holy Trinity Minories was really simple as it was only a few hundred yards away from the execution site.

Henry VIII had the succession legalized through Parliament as Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth. Edward saying he wanted Jane to succeed in his will, was not sufficient to made it official or legal. Although he issued letters patent and intended to change the Act of Succession, he died before he did so. Therefore, Jane isn't actually counted as a British monarch and the shortest rule of any monarch is considered to be that of Edward V, one of the incorrectly labelled Princes in the Tower. His reign was two months and a few days before Richard III usurped the throne. Mary I's reign dates from the death of Edward VI.

Halleluiah! Someone actually said what I have thought for many a years. Young Edward while deathly ill was tricked into naming his cousin Lady Jane to inherit the crown. A lot of things that a King or Queen did was not all their fault but of those who were advising them. Putting the ideas into the monarchs heads. Like with Mary I. It was her advisors to talked her into burning those who would not return to the old religion. And these advisors were of the Catholic church and from Phillip's court. They cared not for the English people only their master.....Phillip. And after the nightmare that Mary ? had lived through torn away from her mother and bullied by her father and his second wife. She was scared badly and listened to Phillips men. Edward, who was sickly and still a child who had been sheltered all his young life. Knew nothing of the real world only what his Uncle and his advisors told him. Greedy men concerned not with the country but for themselves, their pockets and what power they could obtain.

Mary was adament about returning her realm back to the Catholic faith, so it's doubtful that her council had to do much convincing to get her to sign off on the executions. She could have stopped it but she chose not to which tells me that she wasn't too bothered by it.
@muttstersmart
@muttstersmart Жыл бұрын
@@chadmiller2224 Mary didn’t wish to burn the Protestants. She was bothered. Yes, she forced everyone to attend Mass, but she didn’t order the burnings because she wanted them dead. She started burning Protestants after she had her Phantom (or Molar) pregnancy. Back then, people were heavily religious and Mary’s advisors believed the supposed Pregnancy failing was due to Mary tolerating Protestants. This is why it happened.

As fervent as Mary was about Catholicism, Edward was even more so about Protestantism, regardless of the problems it committed in his realm. Not to mention, both Edward and Jane shared their fervor and intellectual passions for the New Religion, not only their beliefs but beliefs as only fervent teenagers can express them. Jane "fan girlled" famous scholars and intellectuals on the Continent who in turn, recognised her powerful intellect. She was educated by John Aylmer and Heinrich Bullinger and conversed with the famous scholars like Roger Ascham, also taught Elizabeth and who later became Secretary to Mary and later Elizabeth. Ascham taught writing, thought, writing style , Greek and the use of vernacular languages. A well-known public intellectual and scholar of the New Religion and Teachings like Ascham, his circle would easily have contributed to Edward's high opinion of Jane as a potential ruler of England.

Henry VIII's will and his promiscuity, along with his penchant for getting rid of wives did cause a bit of a problem after his death. His sister Margaret's line ,giving us James V and then ultimately his grandson James VI.,was heavily favoured both by Henry's will and the desire of the people to have a male King,so I think you're right in surmising that Jane Grey's father was a huge catalyst in pushing her onto the throne. BTW his title is pronounced Mar-quizzzz/ss . And the unfortunate girl was a sad pawn in a vicious game. As the state of the head discussed in Victorian times doesn't match the description of his death,there will always be a possibility that they are not one and the same. But,thank you for an interesting, as always,video. Very best wishes to you&yours.

James VI was the grandson of James V,. James V was only survived by 1 legitimate child.- Mary, Queen of Scots. Henry's will in fact disinherited the family of his sister Margaret even though James VI did become James I of England and Ireland on the death of Elizabeth

@@pedanticradiator1491 Your absolutely right about him being grandson,my dyslexia causes me many problems. I've read far too many versions of the changes around the succession after Henry's death,so am not going to argue voraciously, nor do I really care. Best wishes to you&yours.

@@TheWhore2culture no Henry had fallen out with Margaret and had fought against the Scots so he cancelled out her descendants from his will. It was Henry not Edward who restored Elizabeth and Mary to the succession and stated that after them if they had no children it would go to the family of his younger sister Mary (grandmother of Jane Grey). I'm sorry to argue it with you but I have been studying Royal and political history for over 30 years and I like to get things right.

From my understanding she was merciful at the beginning of her reign. As more rebellions happened, she got less merciful and of course there were the burnings of protestants, hence her nickname. Kind of a shame for her really because as pointed out above, Henry VIII had many more people executed (70,000 beheadings alone if I recall correctly).

I’m not sure if Henry VIII is thought by anyone to be either psychologically or emotionally stable and there is far more just the terrible and pointless deaths of many Catholics to prove that. Which is probably why he doesn’t have anything attached to his name and title to denote that. Just saying Henry VIII brings up images of a wife killing, monastery destroying despot who did whatever he felt necessary to increase his power and couldn’t care less who he trampled on to achieve his goal. I also think that Bloody Mary was probably thought up after the death of Queen Mary to aid in making the Protestants put to death during her short reign, be seen as martyrs. It has probably stuck in part to differentiate her from both Mary Queen of Scots and from the other Queen Mary’s that came after, as they were either consorts, so have no number or joint monarchs, so the number system isn’t really used for the Queen Mary’s and people will mostly take the quickest and easiest route to do so.
