Charlene was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1991 and her journey since then has given her insight into the challenges experienced by people with mental health conditions within and outside of the mental health sector. This inspired her to advocate for mental health and human rights. In 2018 she established the Global Mental Health Peer Network. And has published widely on issues related to mental health and human rights, stigma and the needs of people with mental illness in low-and middle-income countries.
