Education is profoundly changing the lives of women in the developing world, except when it doesn't. In her impassioned TEDxMonterey talk, documentary filmmaker Amy Benson recounts her transformative experience on assignment for an international NGO to capture the impact of education scholarships for girls in Nepal. Her current documentary film project, The Girl Who Knew Too Much, tells the story of a Nepali girl, Shanta, her family, and the complexities of global development.
Amy Benson left an ultra-rewarding 10-year teaching career, to co-found Nonfiction Media, a production company in Seattle, with her storytelling husband, Scott Squire. She has shot and edited over 25 films telling the stories of nonprofits in the Pacific Northwest, Africa and Asia. She is passionate about telling the stories of girls and women around the world. Amy is currently directing and producing, The Girl Who Knew Too Much, her first feature length documentary film, expected to be released early 2015. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I am truly saddened to hear this but Shanta’s story is also a huge finding which can/should bring real change. Well done on making the decision to talk about Shanta despite the NGO requesting you to talk about other girls instead. This is important because it shows the important of looking at the wider picture (the social determinants of health and more). It seems like that what might have been a contributor to her suicide was the bigger picture of moving from the blue phase to the orange phase of Spiral Dynamics. - so having a mentor from the orange or higher phase might have made a difference.

Not only me that face that problems but most girls around the world too. I am glad that five years ago I made a good discussion that I want to live and make something different about girls lives in Cambodia not to die. I want to share my story to you too but I don't know how?? Do anyone know how to contact with her ( the one who gave a speech).

Shanta saw education and her family as well as something that would change their standard of living not as something that would change and shape her mind thats my say Its so strange why parents do tell their children that they wont be living forever with them so they have to keep educating to get a job with will paid salary so that the members of the society would respect them what a nasty thing to do to child as he/she comes to the world.

Do you need to look deeper into the culture to understand the suicide trends? This is not a Christian culture that abhors death. I looked into the progress of your project with Shanta’s family. I think you are learning about the Nepalese culture, but I do wonder if your own cultural lenses, and super generous heart, aren’t deceiving you a bit.
