This week’s sale of Austrian collector Heidi Horten’s jewelry collection at Christie’s is expected to shatter auction records - likely eclipsing the sale of Elizabeth Taylor’s collection a decade ago. But recent revelations on the origins of the Horten fortune have clouded the groundbreaking sale. Heidi’s husband, German entrepreneur Helmut Horten, was a direct beneficiary of the Nazi policy of Aryanization - the forced sale of Jewish-owned businesses to new Aryan owners at fire sale prices. While the jewelry to be sold in the auction was not looted, there is a direct connection between Nazi policies & how the Horten family built its wealth. The New York Times’ recent article refers to an affidavit alleging that Helmut Horten threatened a Jewish business owner with deportation to concentration camps if he resisted Horten’s takeover. The proceeds of the sale are to be used for an art museum & a medical research foundation, both founded by Heidi Horten.
