Absolutely terrific watch Roger, filled with the usual high level of detail and insight, especially in relation to the stage play. The Heiress is a wonderful film led by performances of the highest order. This has inspired a much needed rewatch. Thank you :)

Thanks so much, Chris. This was my first re-watch in decades and it was one of this years surprises for me in that its emotional power was still intact. The performances were amazing. Hope you enjoy your re-visit.

This is a film I've only seen once, but I absolutely loved it. Everyone does a great job of acting, and the energy between de Havilland and Clift is amazing. It's so nice to see Miriam Hopkins in her first film since working with archrival Bette Davis in Old Acquaintance six years earlier. I don't own the Criterion version, but I'm tempted!

Hopkins was inspired casting. I didn’t know she hadn’t made a movie in 6 years. She also appears in a later Wyler film, Carrie, with Olivier and Jennifer Jones that I had considered for this mini-series. I didn’t mention how beautiful the print is on this Criterion release. It deserved those Oscars. Aaron Copland who didn’t compose many movies was one of the winners.

Greetings Roger! Many thanks for the insightful and in-depth review of a film that I have long admired and unlike many of the other films you've examined, I do have this in my collection and I have viewed it a number of times. In my estimation, Olivia de Havilland's performance ranks as one of the best ever by an actress in the history of the cinema. The sheer arc of her character sets the stage for this astonishing performance. You correctly pay homage to Richardson's significant contributions and to Wyler's habit of getting nuanced performances. What also surprised me the first time I watched the film was Clift's performance. I was not entirely sure he was a fortune hunter until the final stages of the story. Just brilliant acting! My own most recent viewing experience was the remarkable 2019 film, For Sama, directed by Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts. Nominated for a Best Feature Documentary Academy Award, the narrative is that which is very rare - a woman with child in a war zone. In particular, the film is set in Aleppo, Syria, from 2012-2016 when the city was under intense siege from forces loyal to the dictator Asaad and the Russians, who relentlessly bomb the city, causing huge casualties. The title itself suggests the format of the film in which the Mother is making a film document so that her young daughter will have a record of her from the daily carnage that is experienced. The Mother is a supporter of the revolutionaries and her Father is a surgeon. The Russians, like the Israelis in Gaza, targeted hospitals for bombing raids. There is one unforgettable scene after another. My most recent film acquisition is 2015's Joy, featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper. Thank you again for sharing your great analysis and have a terrific remainder of the weekend!

Hi Chris. I am currently reading a terrific biography of William Wyler by Jan Herman and am looking forward to the section on The Heiress and the other two Wyler films I discussed in this mini-series. Olivia de Havilland wanted him and only him to direct her in this role because she knew she would be challenged and give the best performance that she was capable of. I have not seen either of the movies you mention. Your description of the documentary is compelling. Thanks for the great comments as always and take care.

*Yes, "The Heiress," based on Henry James's "Washington Square," was an excellent movie--but William Wyler's best film is also my candidate for the best Hollywood movie of all time: "The Best Years of Our Lives.*

I agree with The Best Years of Our Life as a beautiful, memorable movie. Wyler has many great movies on his filmography to choose from. Thanks for commenting.

I haven’t seen The Heiress in such a long spell…i do seem to remember how effective Ralph Richardson was in the movie…unfortunately, according to Partricia Bosworth’s biography, perfectionist Clift and director Wyler barely spoke to one another off camera !

That is interesting that Wyler and Clft didn’t get along. Actors generally liked him despite the multiple takes. I’m starting Jan Herman’s biography of Wyler today so I will see what they have to say about his relationship with Clift. Thanks for commenting.
