Lmao to be fair, for many at the time, Revenge of the Sith was indeed the final one because of this one being the bridge.

a 4 hour movie? now who would release such a monstrosity and expect it to be any good!

The more that I find out about the prequel trilogy, the more that I notice the massive pacing issues that detract from the entire experience. Episode 1 had a whole lot of worthless nothing happen, which was later ignored or reintroduced later. Episode 2 did little better, and focused on one of the most stilted and passionless romances in movie history. And then Episode 3 is so packed to the gills with story beats that nothing had room to breathe, plot threads dangled all over the place, half the planned content was cut for time, what's left was rushed, and it's still the best of the three by a country mile. It's no wonder that the Grace cut starts out with the Darth Maul fight.

And all those unexplored plot threads allowed others to fill the universe with even more details than even a movie could have in the form of the Clone Wars cartoon, among others.

When the movie first came out, I honestly didn't notice a lot of those cut subplots or character development, cuz I had already gotten a good fill of that from various expanded universe content, like that Tartakovsky cartoon that litterally led into the start of the film.

I remember he and his team discussing that and how they felt honored that they would get to show Palpatine's fake kidnapping as well as showing how Grevious got his breathing problem. Although how much of that is canon thanks to differences and trouble placing it into the Lucasfilm created Clone Wars show is up for debate.

My biggest complaint about what was cut was the reveal of the origin of the clone army as well as who wiped the kamino system from the Jedi records. You’d think maybe Jedi Master Diaz wouldn’t have wiped the record of the system if he wanted his order of clones to be found. Maybe Dooku did it, but that’s just conjecture. Lucas even MENTIONED that plot thread would get resolved in Ep3 in the original Ep2 DVD audio commentary, and it never was.

all the prequels writing had weaknesses in setting up and paying off stuff properly

I always assumed that Syfo-Dias had planned to allow things to unfold at a specific time but was killed before he could follow through. He had to hide the clones early on lest someone with a conscious find out and work to have it stopped. Following his death, Duku and Palpatine were also served by the army being discovered at the brink of war so if Obi-Wan hadn't discovered them himself it would have shortly been revealed in some way. The sith couldn't afford for the army to not be found, if things had advanced further without an army at hand for the Jwdi and Republic to enlist the lively outcome of things would have been the separatists and Republic suing for peace in relatively short order. And peace with possible intermittent flair ups would have been established. The films never needed a big reveal concerning who did exactly what and when.

I've never believed Syfo-Dias was originally intended to be a real person. In the shooting draft, Syfo-Dias was Sido-Dias. Sidious. I think Palpatine was playing the Kaminoans like he was playing everybody else. When you think you're playing poker, Sheev is playing chess. Of course. Sido-Dias was changed to Syfo-Dias who was changed to a real Jedi. Which I like less. What I don't like is that once this secret clone army commissioned by a mysterious someone gets deployed, (and as a Jedi there's no way Syfo-Dias could afford to buy a clone army, if the Kaminoans worked cheap everybody would do business with them. Someone extremely important bankrolled it) nobody asks any questions and everyone is just cool with it. Even the guy who discovered the secret army in the first place. I understand it though, any investigation of the paper trail would lead directly to Sheev Palpatine and remember, the army was commissioned years before the Separatist crisis, so Palpy would have some splainin' to do. Buuuut the clone army brought us favorites like Rex and Fives. It's still a plot hole though.

The sad part about these payoffs is that the reason most of them weren't paid off sufficiently is because they didn't really matter. "Someone did it" therefore the ending happens, therefore the original trilogy happens, and none of it built on anything or revealed anything new about any of the movies whether it was explained or not.

I think a Clone Wars episode explains your question.

Does anyone remember the original Lego Star Wars game? Atleast I got my hands on it before I saw the Revenge of the Sith, I didn't get to episode III in it till after I saw the movie but wouldn't that be a way to expirience the final installment of this series: By playing the lego version of it. I don't know someone had to be able to do it and then go to forums to spoil it all and no-one would believe that person till they eventually saw the movie. Or not because they dropped out after the Episode II

On FINDING THE TRUE PATH, if there was a time for me to be excited as a Star Wars and EU fan, it was the release period between Episode 2 & 3. I get the distinct feeling that as Episode 3 was being developed, the EU creators were given free reign to put in whatever the heck they wanted to fill out the gap. During this time we got tons of comics, Clone Wars novels, YA books, games, and of course the 2D Clone Wars cartoon. With this gap finally being filled and the wars and battles that promised by Obi-Wan’s line in Episode 4, it got me massively hyped for Episode 3.

I don't think Lucas was as active with that version, while he was more active with the later one.
