For those looking to buy one of these, I would make sure the kaowool seam lines up at the bottom of the forge as it was at the beginning of this video. This way if you develop any cracks in the satanite at the seam, the outer shell of the forge will still be protected by the fire brick. I ordered one myself, it is being delivered today. Thanks for the video.
@Loterbol
@Loterbol 2 жыл бұрын
FYI, I know this is old but the pre-cut hole for the burner tube doesn't allow for that kaowool configuration. I tried but you'd have a big hole in the wrong spot.
@johnathon007

@@Loterbol if you rotate it correctly it will line up just like it was shipped. Just imagine it rotating 180 degrees at the hole instead of simply turning in in the forge to line it up.

I recommend using more refractory on the floor, or make a sacrificial floor with more refractory, and ditching the hard brick. The chamber will heat faster, refractory dependent, and more evenly. The benefit of the hard brick is its durability and thermal density. The forge will use less gas once the brick stores all the heat it can handle.

what I learned from grumpy old men about building an ultra efficient forge: use 2" thick rigidized ceramic wool (very dangerous to handle always use a mask) then 1" high end refractory and finish with a ceramic coating. if you forge a lot it will save you lots of gas costs over time. material will heat up faster, temps will get higher, etc. they say you want 2" of open space around your billet (or whatever you're forging). you don't want too much open air space in the forge.

This isn’t a video about how to make the “best” or safest and most efficient forge. This video is to demo this exact forge, and help people assemble this particular inexpensive forge kit with the materials it provides. It’s under $100, of course it won’t be optimal in construction or efficiency, who would expect it to be? But it is functional and a great novice budget option.

if you don't mind I have a few questions. 1: can you melt metals in this, such as aluminum so you could do casting. 2: how much propane did this take, and how long did the piece of metal take to turn red hot. (just an estimate) 3 : If you used this after ward did it last or did it deteriorate after a short time. if you could answer these questions that would be very helpful thanks.

At the price this forge was selling for when this video came out it would have been hard to buy anything other than a decent burner for the same price, you might have been able to buy 4 or 5 decent firebricks if you didn't want a burner. If you don't limit yourself to gas forges a peice of pipe and a hole in the ground can be used to get steel fairly hot..

A dozen fire bricks and you don't have to mess with all that crap just stack the bricks leaving an open end and some place to put your torch and you are in business

question, what is the little thing with the yellow lever handle on top called? my forge did not come with one, is it something you need to buy separately? I can't get my forge to start and I'm assuming that it needs that :( any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated

Take the whole thing into Home Depot or lowes and go to the gas fittings in the plumbing section and find a cut out valve that fits

How do you fix the cracks on the cement do i take everything out and get new refractory cement and ceramic wool?
@navcop031
@navcop031 2 жыл бұрын
Nah. Just get some of the refractory mix and fill them in. Cracks are gonna happen. Just keep filling until it starts crumbling. And then it’s time to replace.

Instructions (paraphrased): _Wipe refractory paste off outside of forge._ Leaves it unwiped. Smh.

To get one of these in Australia it cost about $130.00 + SHIPPING $89.00 so it is not worth it here you can buy a bigger better one cheaper then this one I was going to get one until I looked in to it and it made me very disappointed because I wanted one 🥺 but I can't afford it any way as I'm not working because I had a work injury before this plannedamick so now I don't have a job sucks to be me

Actually just figured it out! Had to have the regulator valve all the way open (red) and then slowly crack it from the ball valve. Hope that helps someone else!

@@tylerharrington6899 Nice! Glad you figure it out. Don’t be scared to open the valve all the way. As long as you’re in a well ventilated area, propane is relatively safe. So CRANK IT. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
