The "Hero of Ukraine" is the highest ranking non-military medal in Ukraine and it traces its lineage to the Soviet Union's highest award, the "Hero of the Soviet Union." In this video, I will cover the history behind this legendary medal.
During World War 2, 966 Ukrainians were considered Hero's of the Soviet Union. After the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky decided to revive this Soviet tradition to counter Putin's stated goal of "Denazification."
After World War 2, Soviet cities, such as Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kiev, Sevastopol, and so on, were given a special status of "Hero City."
This status was revived in March of 2022, Ukrainian cities such as Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, and Mykolaiv, are now considered "Hero Cities of Ukraine."

This is my first history video, I hope you all enjoy it. In the future I will make videos covering Russian and German History, and my next video will likely be about the similarities between the Bundeswehr and the Volksarmee! If my channel can grow into something bigger, I will try to purchase more East German footage, so my channel can follow a dual content format where I make history videos and upload historical footage!

"war with each other" В России большинство граждан имеют мнение, что это не "война", а обычная СВО, как в Сирии. Это полностью подтверждается как государственными документами, так и фактическими обстоятельствами. Не сомневайтесь, что ракеты, если уж они всё это время спокойно долетают до западной части Украины, в случае чего, могут так же точно попасть в более стратегически важные точки, но уже государственной машины.

your biggest mistake you seeing it as some brother nations or something, while in reality russians always abused Ukraine and Ukrainians and ongoing events are just continuation of something that was set since the SU collapsed. We had / have our history, our heroes. They don't like it, they want us to be a part of them. This concept is not really understood even in Ukraine, but it is true.

Very informative Video and a new Style of your usual videos, I really wouldn't mind more of these Videos. I have been following your channel quite some time now, since the beginning of the channel I believe. I really enjoyed the different German parades and the BGS Video, I always find it fascinating how countries handle and develop Military Traditions and the differences, like Russia and Ukraine with the USSR or the Bundeswehr and the NVA with their German/Prussian Military heritage.

I will also be making East German history videos, there's a lot of interesting content that's coming! :) And I agree, it's very fascinating how these countries continue these obscure traditions. Ukraine and Russia still have a lot in common despite the political situation.

Yes, I quite surprised as well when I learned that Ukraine was doing this. It was definitely a reaction to Putin's statements, because anything Soviet related in Ukraine is typically dismantled. It's definitely a nice nod to WW2, hopefully the war will end soon and people can come together. I grew up with the Ukrainian diaspora in America, and we all spoke Russian, no one had any issues with each other, but now its the complete opposite unfortunately! :(

@@SuperLinuxoid pro-Ukrainians with neighbour analogy again, which doesn't covers important events such as illegal ousting of Yanukovich in February of 2014 (where officials stated that "he was corrupted!!!", yeah, sure, officials just casually refused to be corrupt, we believe in that /s), Euromaidan in which pro-Yanukovich people were silenced + mass censorships, anti-terrorist operation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, "friendship trains", Azov militants (which have wolfhook and black sun in their emblem, both insignias that used by WW2 Germany) that became national guard after helping with Euromaidan and UN reports of human trafficking in 2014-2016 by UAF. Classic. But "hurrr durrrr our neighbour is bad!!!!". You guys literally kicked your own president against your own constitution because "he refused to just hate ruzzia!!!". You guys tried to do that during Orange revolution, which happened loooong before 2014. Also it's Russia' fault, да?
@k0lliak553

What i'm saying is that this event is one of the most complicated ones in the history of wars for the past 100 years or so. You need to look as far back as ~1994 to fully understand what happened - for example, in this period of time, USA made Ukraine dismantle their own planes, paying them 1-2% of the cost to make them, with the pretext of "Russia could get them sooner or later". Why? Because it happened after Admiral Kuznetsov' crew (which was serving the Ukrainian SSR, but you know what happened in 1991) decided to go to Russian waters. They've did this successfully - and since transferring a plane is much easier than a ship, Ukraine gladly dismantled their own aviation just so "Russia wouldn't have them". I should repeat myself that this was in 1994-2004. All of these events snowballed into what we have now. Is Russia a 100% good guy? No, because we can't have fully black or fully white things. But Ukraine wasn't trying to de-escalate the situation in any way - actually, they've escalated it further. And now saying "yeah ruzzia just decided to attack us out of the blue and their only goal is to wipe our nationality!!!!" is THE definition of propaganda and manipulation; something that you've pointed as "bad and what ruzzia does". Sometimes i regret focusing my life on history. The historician work in todays world is just isn't needed anymore

Wow, what an interesting video! Many forget how culturally-aligned these two countries actually are and what history they have in common. I find these „Hero of the Soviet Union“ and „Hero city“ medals and titles really charming and elegant! The Soviets really knew how to design awards (the Chernobyl medals for liquidators are my favourites!). I also find it wonderful that you played out the ending in full! :) I really hope this war comes to end. It‘s so sad how much blood has been unnecessarily spilled and how many lost all of their belongings. I know Russia hasn‘t really been fond of democracy since Boris Yeltsin (understandable) but I hope that one day Russia will get a leader who will give her people a bite of what a good democracy can be like. Once this war is over, one might hope that these countries might come together and try to reconcile with one another so that Russia can dream of an absolution one day…
