There is a lot of debate about supplements. Some health professionals claim they are essential to make up for the fact that most of us aren’t eating enough fruit and veg. Others say that supplement pills do nothing and you’re wasting your money. So what’s the truth?
Kimberley Wilson, a psychologist with a master's degree in nutrition, looks at how multivitamins affect our brain, body and behaviour - and why it really matters who is taking them.

Vitamin supplements reduce prison violence by an entire third?! That is so shocking I would need to see the study myself. So many studies have a tiny sample size or a selection bias

It might be also that the prisoners who volunteered for the study already feel "observed". This alters their behavior. Another reason might be that the prisoners who are involved might have experienced the effect of being involved in the experiment as being important, noticeable, cared which decreased violent behavior. These feelings shouldn't be so much widespread among inmates in my opinion.

@@doganbirol13 I don't think it actually matters. We were told in the video that there was a placebo group as well, therefore, if what you said is true, both the groups would be less violent.

The big problem many nations are facing right now- is deteriorating of soil which results in less nutritious crops. Although many are eating enough vegetables and fruits but still are deficient Secondly because of pesticides and fertilisers in farming, chunk of our population is facing hormonal problems

Yes soil and poor quality fertilisers, pesticides, genetic modification and the fact fruits and vegetables contain about 10 percent of vitamins than they did 40 years ago.

Meat is the main human diet. Pasture Raised & wild caught meat is the best option & doesn't have pesticides & are loaded with iron, B's vitamins & real protein.

As a type 2 diabetic my system needs supplementation, as the disease depletes the body of many vitamins and minerals. Supplements have helped me to stop the progress of this degenerative condition to the point where it can be managed without any meds. PS I have also implemented a low carb lifestyle and practice intermittent fasting. In my case that has been hugely beneficial.

Keto and intermittent fasting if done correctly will actually reverse your insulin resistance and cure type 2 diabetes permanently. You need to completely remove all carbohydrates from your diet, don't cheat, don't think "just a little bit won't hurt" if done properly it will work 100% Carbohydrates are toxic to human beings We should never eat anything that grows beneath the ground, sugar is toxic and causes 95% of all illness

Take berberine. Instead of. Type 2 can be reversed and put into remission with diet. Everyone thinks healthy food is green or wholegrain. Carbs are bad . Carbs are sugar.

Type 2 diabetes is not a disease and can be cured 100% ,dont let your doctor or pharmaceutical industry tell you different ,99% of all vitamins and minerals are synthetic and made by pharmaceutical companies

@@SatumainenOlento Agree. There are some studies of the effects of IF and a low carb lifestyle on health and esp. blood sugar control. All encouraging. Specific data on the actual reversal of T2D seem to be lacking though... (Big Pharma etc). Still, nothing much to be gained from myself and others who no longer need meds. So why not go all the way and find out if there's a cure there for one of the world's most widespread diseases that kills so many directly or indirectly? It would make life better by taking away so much fear, misery and grief. One can always hope, though I am not holding my breath. If those studies haven't happened yet, then there must be reasons for it that supercede human happiness in the health industry. And yes, it is an industry so guess where its interests lie? But hopefully I will be proven wrong. Meanwhile, it's each for oneself in the day to day struggle. My best to all. Never give up and brave the ups and downs. It's a bumpy ride at best but who ever said life would be a cruise (for anyone)?

Sources are CRITICAL for reporting research, especially for nutrition, as it is one of the studies the most influenced by bias and uneven conditions.

I found it to be a bit irritating. I thought that the BBC were sticklers for proper use of language. It's probably unfair, but if there are enough silly spelling mistakes you begin to distrust the basic journalism. I know not all journalists can spell but the editor should be competent in this respect.

Seeing a decrease in accuracy and proof-reading is very concerning, especially from a trusted and respected broadcaster such as the BBC There is absolutely nothing wrong in aiming to help and assist such an important uploader in making sure the content is accurate Would *_you_* rather see them make frequent mistakes, typos and present inaccurate information?

Interesting! The implications for reducing crime snd violence in society is huge. The study of vitamins in prisons suggests that by providing children and adolescents with the proper food and vitamins , prison populations would decrease and save many from a life in prison while saving taxpayer dollars across the board. Wow! Of course the US will never use this information for society’s benefit, it would take money out of a lot of already heavily lined pockets.

4:13 This links to the anti-acne drug, Roaccutane, or Accutane, which is essentially is a very high does of vitamin A (not identical but both become the same chemical when processed by the digestive system). This has side effects such as serious birth defects (pregnancy is severely warned against for women taking the drug - to the point of advising that more than one contraceptive being used simultaneously), temporary liver damage (alcohol is strictly forbidden while you are on the drug), and depression including suicide.

@D R Wow, that has not happened to me, though I am pretty salt an pepper being 51y.o. I hadn't thought about joint pain, I certainly am prone to that. I had a six-month course of roaccutane 35 years ago.

When I was 19, I blindly trusted doctors and wholeheartedly agreed when a dermatologist suggested Accutane. My skin wasn't even that bad, and the Accutane didn't really even help that much. I can't remember how long I was on it, but no more than six months. I can't believe I willingly took something with so many potentially awful side-effects. In my early thirties, I learned more about holistic health and stopped wearing make-up on my skin, really cleaned-up my diet, and for a few months took a liver supplement that a naturopath had suggested. The results were astounding - my skin glowed. People I knew would actually come up to me and touch my face. It was crazy! I find it sad that such dangerous medications are pushed on the public, when perhaps all that might be needed is a better diet, healthier habits, and an occasional supplement.

When we keep on hearing about the mass shootings in USA, the war in Ukraine, the multi-national famine it is exacerbating and the chronic misery of the average person living in poverty world wide, I know I am very very lucky to have such small problems.

People pay ridiculous prices for their vitamins just because they are advertised by whatever celebrity/so called professional. Basic multi-vitamin/mineral pill that has 100% of daily recommended amounts here in northern europe costs like few euro cents per day if you just buy a non branded version.

All vitamin supplements are available online from reputable suppliers and are extremely reasonably priced. That's why big pharma isn't interested in selling them as the porofit is negligible compared to the vast profits from pharmaceuticals, all with lists of dangerous side effects.

So the essential question is, what is a nutrient-deficient diet? There is no discussion here of the reduction in micronutrient density in fruit and vegetables, due to selective breeding for traits such as appearance, and shelf life in particular, which produces food less likely to rot - i.e. less likely to support a population of microbes. If a microbe doesn't want to eat your food, it probably isn't going to sustain you very well either. Another thing not discussed is the preparation of fruit and veg. Water soluble vitamins - the Bs and C - are dissolved into the water by cooking even for a short time. So if you throw the water away, you are also throwing away the vitamins. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble, and are more likely to remain after cooking. Finally, the preservatives (i.e. anti-microbial chemicals) that is put on our fresh produce must be devastating to our gut micro biome, therefore giving us poor nutrient absorption. All of these factors influence the nutrient-deficiency of the modern diet. I am a 50 year old white man, therefore ridiculously privileged, upper middle class. I have a rich diet with lots of fruit and veg (most of the time - I have my vices), some of which I grow myself, and all of good quality due to my nation's excellence at agriculture and horticulture. But if I stop taking my daily 500mg vitamin C supplement in particular, within a week chronic skin problems like eczema and athlete's foot flare up on my body, and eventually even yeast infection, and get worse until I start taking the supplement again. This is despite the fact I grow a lot of my fruit myself, (and as a horticultural professional they are well-fed trees with a wide range of nutrients) and usually eat it raw. I also will get a cold, which does not usually happen to me, despite being a teacher. Other than fruit I have a low-carb diet as well, and most of it based on complex carbs. So I have a good to very good diet. I feel that to avoid the need for micronutrient supplements my diet would have to be exceptional - which is the essence of my point - most people, even in wealthy nations and sectors of society DO have a nutrient-deficiency, which is not easy to fix by altering diet alone.

I have eczema, I will try to take more vitamin c. I never thought to supplement on it specifically because they say that you already reach 100% if you eat fruits and vegetables (which I do). Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you very much for this vital information. I took omega 3 while pregnant with my son and he came out looking relaxed, very healthy n peaceful baby boy in 2007. Unlike the babies who did not take omega 3 ! Then I gave a baby I had prematurely at 37 weeks Omega 3 after she was born and she grew healthy very quickly and put on weight. Now am 48 years and I resumed taking multivitamin supplements after I had gone on a dry fasting and my body lacked enough vitamins, my teeth n bones were making sounds.

To my understanding you can supplement, but the form and quality of the supplement you take is very important and good quality that your body can absorb it, whether you're taking vitamins and minerals selectively or not. Some vitamin supplements are a waste of money, especially some of the ones sold in drug stores.

Take them for three months..then stop for a month. If you don’t notice a difference in metabolism, mood, and skin, you’re on the perfect diet- should also write a book about it. But you probably will, as I did. Just know your deficiencies. One thing to note, not all brands and ingredients are equal.

Moderation is the key. The amount of dosage,, and # pills per day. Last but least for how long? Instead taking daily, try every other day might help as well. Buy vitamins from a certified company.

Nonsense. D3 needs to be taken daily, and once the level in serum has reached an efficient level of approx 150nmols/L 5,000 IUs daily is enough to keep the level where it needs to be. D deficiency is why so many get flu every year in 'the flu season', I haven't had flu or a 'common' cold for twenty years. I didn't suffer anything from Covid or the vaccines.

2:25 an example of over-simplification to the point of nonsense. ALL parts of all living things are made of nutrients. "Nutrients" is just a technical term for food. Protein, carbohydrates and fat (and I argue - plant fibre) are macronutrients, vitamins and minerals are micronutrients.

the 1 needed to pay intentions when buying/chosing OTC supplements is the back label mentioned --> ingredients. some added maltodextrine 🤦, titanium dioxide 🤦, hydrogenated oils 🤦, artificial colors 🤦 (need to check some number of it), talc/magnesium silicate 😱, carrageenan 😱🤯 & etc..

Some supplements can not be replaced by meals. Like Nad+ supplement. I feel incredible heath benefit from it and I can not eat a ton of broccoli for it.

Yeah the typos are quite embarrassing for the BBC but the data is very ''one sided'' - as in, _some_ data do suggest what's said in the video, but without links to the sources... It isn't a great way to share information. Nutrition Science is very particular as there are TONS of factors to take into account and the studies related to nutrition are often filled with bias

This program starts by saying that supplements don’t work and then goes on to highlight “the exceptions” as if these situations could be isolated in some way. Furthermore they then pick out the one (well-known and often quoted) study that showed an exacerbation first cancer. Ignoring the many thousands of studies that have shown tremendous benefits of supplementation where specific supplements were targeted for specific issues.

Great video, very balanced. Be careful not to take over 100% a day, especially of the fat soluble vitamins, unless you have a problem absorbing them.

A great diet is the best thing you can do for yourself, however many people are sick including many with good diets .. our soils are depleted of nutrients plus all the pesticides.. hence why we need supplements

Variety of foods generally suffice. If they were picky or only eat limited selection they're at greater risk of vitamin deficiency. Vitamins are used to aid vitamin deficiency rather than improving ___??? I don't even have a clue why people take them for.

Most people in the UK don't get enough Vitamin D. Very few normal foods contain Vitamin D. We mostly rely on our bodies produce it internally. But for that to happen, we need sunlight, which we don't get enough of either. Anyway, it seems not all vitamins are from food!

"reduce the risk of x" doesn't actually mean anything with vitamins, though. These synthetic vitamins are either being absorbed and utilized in the body or they're not.

What synthetic vitamins? They are natural, not synthetic, usually obtained from plants or animal byproducts. Vitamin D for instance is made from lanolin retrieved from washing lambs' wool. Mushrooms are a good food source, they make D in the skin from exposure to sunlight as do humans, but other mammals, with hair blocking the UVB get it from plants oir meat dependiong on their diet. Dogs for instance need fresh uncooked meat, which is why those fed on machine processed kibble usually die young from cancers.

Ah I forgot to add a very important bit - taking vitamins that you don't need or overdosing on VMS (Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements) that you do need can be every bit as bad as having a deficiency. Adults and children tend to overdose on things that taste good (like chewy vitamins) and both men and women overdose on supplements for weight gain, hair retention, complexion, etc. Overdosing turns vitamins into toxins. I was involved in the sale of VMS and other health products. Again the video is superb, good work BBC with my license fee!

Good overall advice, however it would be even better to talk about the wide spread deficiencies and presence of toxic elements. Vitamin D3 + K2 , Zinc, Iodine can be found in food but usually not enough in common western diets. Vitamins are also needed depending on the way of life and habits, if you are black or work at night or obese (or all 3), vitamin D is missing, etc. As some toxins are inevitable, it is also good to help organs do their cleaning job. There are not only the fructose without fiber and ethanol that are toxic, there are also things like glyphosate and PFAS, PFOS, etc. Some Fish like salmon can help fight heavy metals (even when those contain some), also increase gut biodiversity by eating various food, cheese crust, etc. A lot of modern behaviours and things that are sold in supermarket lead to type II diabete, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, etc. The most important is to check blood levels, and do individualised suggestions.

Exactly! Blood test should been taken and people got into OPTIMAL levels (like in pregnancy). I recently got blood results back where I was only low on Iron, B12 and Folic acids (not anemic!). I have been suffering from severe fatigue. I suggested to my doctor that perhaps I could try to correct those levels under his care. 3 months later, my fatigue is much better and some of my long-term symptoms have disappeared!!! The problem is that *I needed to suggest it to my doctor* instead of him noticing it. It's because their training. Or more like the lack of it.

I tried the prescriptions for allergies. I tried the shots for allergies. I think many of these treatments do not work. I took probiotics and it worked for allergies.

Please provide the scientific study on cancer relative to supplement safety. I read many studys and have not found anything you refererenced. Science rules; not your words here.

Getting a big load of any nutrient at once is never beneficial to the body, just eat real food.

Vitamins and supplements are not the same though. Although all vitamins, are technically supplements, not all supplements are vitamins. For example; curcumin is a supplement (in that it's often sold isolated) as a supplement. At this point there's no debate about its efficacy, as its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, as well as selective hypotensive effects have been studied in vivo and in vitro, and while a minor percent of studies found it to be of a low or moderate efficacy, non was could objectively claim it was innert. Vitamins, save perhaps for Vit D. (which really is a hormone but I digress) in supraphysiologic concentrations are always either ineffective or even hazardous, like in the example with the Retinol. The beta-carotene, however, while somewhat less bioavailable is perfectly safe, and save for the carotenemia, no adverse effects were recorded, even in when extremely large amounts were taken for prolonged periods. So we can't generalize by lumping vitamins and supplements together, considering not even all vitamin forms act the same.

I think organic vitamin and mineral supplements are better than conventional ones especially when it comes to calcium. I take Garden of Life organic supplements and they are great and critical for most vegetarians.

Astonished that this report made no mention of the known link between Vitamin D deficiency and outcomes for those who get Covid.. and the distinct possibility of. link between high levels of vitamin D levels and protection against infection... how can this be omitted in a report about the pros and cons of supplements in 2022?

Yes. The max safe level is 4000 IU a day if vit D levels are not checked. Deficient vitamin D levels have to get checked as 4000 IU won't cut it.

A good quality omega three is fantastic. Skin, hair, eyes really works when hou are of a mature age. Vitamin d and A from cod liver oil keeps flu bugs away. And B1, thiamine for me is a must…relaxes muscles, clears up eyesight, Not all vitamins are alike. Quality varies greatly.

I remember reading a meta study that found that roughly 25% percent of studies found vitamins to have marginal health benefit, 25% had no health benefits, and 50% had an increase risk of cancer. That really killed my daily vitamin intake... killed it like cancer.

Those are synthetic vitamins and studies funded by big pharma that benefit from discrediting the supplements industry. Quality supplements with good diet and exercise can make huge difference!

Vitamin supplements ofcourse would reduce violence. When your body has what it needs it increases your mental wellbeing too. It really does effect how the brain functions, For anyone who doesn't believe me you can just try vitamins for yourself or drastically changing your diet, Even thought patterns change.

I agree! Whenever I start to feel myself slipping into a depression, I take some omega 3, Vitamin D, and Vitamin C. In a short period of time, they really improve my mood!

@@ravecsucks6192 - Well, it's pretty good. I started (clean) keto in January, and so I eat no sugar or processed foods. I eat good quality proteins and fats, and about 3-4 cups of veggies a day. (I'm slowly increasing that number.) I've just always felt better with a vitamin C supplement, even though I usually get plenty in my diet.

I do believe they work. My doctor has me on a prescription vitamin D and iron pill. She wrote the prescription so I believe. Supplements really work or vitamin. 🌝

I had vitamin deficiencies all my life despite being very health conscious with my diet, but I have been getting fully healthy blood test restuls only after I became vegan and again mostly with healthy diet. My health approach to food I consume did not change, only meat and dairy and fish removed. The result - my GP was also amazed how vegan diet took away my chronic vitamin deficiencies. So, please stop sharing wrong information about vegans needing more vitamin, mineral supplements, not at all, if they are eating healthy same as any diet, they are better off in result with vegan diet.

I use to get mouth ulcers all the time and then started taking a multivitamin for men and 1000 mgs of vitamin C daily + a more regular vegetable intake of at least 3 - 4 times a week and they stopped. When I forget or stop my routine. You guessed it, they come back with a vengeance. I’ve only recently introduced omega 3 into the mix, not noticing much of a difference. I’m able to get up earlier thus making me go to be earlier/sleep better + my eyes look whiter and brighter I think👍

Based. Eyes tell you a LOT. Watch for buildup of heavy metals though as they tend to be as prevalent as coliforms in various vitamins!

I must say this video exceeded my expectations. The advice and nuances are 100% on the money. Preventative care is the next big thing as opposed to crisis management. We are able to accurately model not just what people need today (i.e. deficiencies) but also what populations and individuals will need in future to prevent chronic illness. Lucrative or benevolent you can decide but big money has gone into it

I would not want to eat those vitamin pills. If I want nutrition, I'd take it from actual food; they may have rare nutrients that can benefit my health far more than the pills ever could.

You actually haven't learned anything ... since nothing she said had any basis in fact, at least that was shared with us. Did you read the details of a study that she highlighted in the description? What you could learn today though from me would be far more valuable than anything you heard in this video ... if you are willing to keep an open mind. And that would be to not believe anything you read or see without it being backed up by some verifiably reliable source. Trust but verify!

I have read that Diabetics can not break down Beta Carotene into vitamin A. The form you get from fish is the form that they can utilize. I would definitely check this out first though before doing anything.

Where did you read that? And what type of diabetes? I am T1 Diabetic for 18 years and never heard that and I consume beta-carotene heavy foods in my regular diet and my vitamin A levels are more than adequate. In fact, studies show that Beta-Carotene prevents metabolic syndrome and T2 diabetes - it is linked with a lower incidence risk of T2 DIabetes - which isn't the same at all as T1 diabetes _(one is metabolic, the other is autoimmune)_

@@ProtoMarcus it's been several years ago. Type 2 Diabetics runs in my family. I was taking vitamin A in the form of beta carotene and was not feeling good, I switched to the A in the form of fish oil and never got sick. I think the article was in a magazine called Prevention magazine, but that is a guess. I certainly don't want to alarm you or anyone else. It's a bit of information that is worthy of doing more research. I only wish I had more substantial knowledge and information for you. That's why I said to investigate more thoroughly before you stop what your doing. One other thing your a type 1 Diabetics the information I found was for type 2. The take away is to always learn. I hope in some small way this was helpful.

If your diet isn’t primarily fruits and vegetables, what exactly are you eating? I eat a plant-based diet, but I also take a multivitamin. I don’t believe in taking heavy doses of vitamins.

Nutrition is only one factor to excellent health. You also need to think about genetics, physical activity level, stress levels, sleep quality and consistency, and plenty other factors. That said, if your nutrition is well balanced, you definitely don't need supplements at all, keep doing what you're doing!

Come back when you're 40, 50 and 60 and lets hear about your health without any supplements. Till late 20's, I too felt invincible. Now in my 50's, I've lost my long thick hair, got too many root canals, losing my muscles, my endurance and my eyesight. This was unthinkable in my 20's.
