Filmmakers Reveal Myths Behind Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder That Prevent Treatment and Diagnosis
The film explores the impact that this disorder has on hearts and minds of UK sufferers.
The documentary tackles some of the myths surrounding FASD, including ‘Its ok to have 1 or 2 drinks in pregnancy’, ‘You can tell if someone has FASD because of the way they look’ and ‘People with FASD just behave badly’. In fact, in the UK, chief medical officers have said, since 2016, that there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink in pregnancy with some research showing that just one drink of alcohol can affect fetal behaviour in the womb. Often associated with distinctive facial features, less than 10% of people living with FASD will actually have different facial features and rather than their behaviour being something that they can simply overcome, FASD instead makes cognitive processing, emotional regulation and impulse control harder for people living with the issue.
While there is some awareness of FASD across the media and wider society, a clear understanding and straightforward path to diagnosis is still some way off in the UK, which is held to be 20 years behind Canada and the US in dealing with FASD. This documentary features interviews with professionals, parents and individuals living with FASD.
The documentary strips back the layers of misunderstandings about drinking during pregnancy and, rather than dictate terms to pregnant women, the film sets out the truths behind the disorder and highlights that FASD can occur with one drink.

I truly hope this video gets the exposure and views that it deserves. The ignorance of conditions like this and autism is widespread and that needs to change.

EXCELLENT MOVIE I wonder, how many people that went to BOTH, Keneth Gordon and Fraser Academy, actually have FASD!?!? WOW! Powerful and well done documentary! I actually was crying by the end. For the record, CANADA does NOT have warnings on bottles! After having watched this, I went and checked my friend's Jack Daniel's bottle. There is NO warning about FASD. It says, "Please Drink Responsibly" That doesn't say, you will cause permanent brain and body damage to a fetus! This made me cry! I was bawling by the end of this! Thankyou, for making this AMAZING DOCUMENTARY! Released, September 9th, 2021 ~ FASD Day

That young girl with FASD who said she had been in psych units 4 times this past year, and that CAMHS failed her - I feel for her so much. Her situation is so much more common than most ppl realise, and imo the child mental health and adult mental health service on the NHS fails the majority of its patients. Its underfunded and undertrained staff is a dangerous combo that is fatal to patients in many cases. I hope that more people see how messed up the NHS mental health systems are.

As a Canadian I find it really hard to believe that someone didn't know alcohol in pregnancy was bad in 2001.

The U.K. is not very good at spreading awareness around FASD. I’ve witnessed wealthy pregnant women drinking ‘one glass’ of Prosecco at work events or celebrations in the last 5 years. I’ve also had discussions with friends who aren’t aware that the “one glass of wine is ok” rule is just a myth that was never based on solid research. I’m not surprised that a doctor in the U.K. has said an occasional drink is fine because I know that the health minister in the U.K. took a long time to decide on an abstinence during pregnancy recommendation. Luckily my mum was very health conscious even in the 90s and didn’t drink with my brother as he was planned. I was a happy ‘accident’ so as soon as she found out she stopped having wine with dinner. The best updated guidelines in the U.K. are now on the NHS website but not many people use it. I also use Harvard’s medical blog and other university websites to keep up to date on health advice as otherwise the information your GP is giving you could be outdated. U.K. GPs are best for diagnosis and testing, not preventative health advice.

Most reasonable people don't "do" religion - what with it being Bronze Age man-made monesense.
