A while back I was tuning my rack tom, and I was trying to get more resonance and tone out of it. However, it continued to sound lifeless no matter how hard I tried to get both heads tuned just right. Sometimes a dead sound is cool, but you always want to have the option of a full, longer tone too. I really wasn’t getting the tom sound I desired, because this just wasn’t cutting it. Then I made an interesting discovery that changed everything.
I’ve always been a fan of setting my tom in a basket stand rather than mounting it off the kick or cymbal stand, because that allows me to more easily place it exactly where I want it. What I realized, though, was that my basket stand was essentially sucking the life out of the drum - not letting it resonate. Honestly, this was understandable since there’s so much contact that a basket stand makes with the drum. Of course it’s going to deaden it a little! But when I decided to switch out stands, things got interesting. Here’s what I learned:
Not all stands are created equal. Though all basket stands might work great for a snare, some work great and some work horribly for a rack tom.
I found that the stand I’d been using was indeed the horrible stand. I switched it out for another one I had lying around, and suddenly the drum sounded awesome. I’ll show you how I landed on the stand I’m using now, and you’ll see what the key component is that you want to look for in a tom-worthy basket stand.
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

Dude you totally nailed it in this video. I too used a similar Sonor stand to the DW for my rack tom (1961 Sonor Tear Drops). Having a 3 ply tom, the stand really killed its amazing tone. Lucky enough i had the original Sonor snare stands from 1961. It is very low mass, with 3 rubber balls ends, very little of the tom is actually grasped. But it holds great! It's been 6 years now since the change, I've gigged with it, recorded numerous tracks, and never put it back in the case. Further, I continued & bought the Gibraltar low mass stands for gigs and recording, a really good stand, strong, not to expensive, and LIGHT! Thanks Stephen for telling the world about this.

I have had EXACTLY the same experience. The exact same style of snare basket you showed/used gave me the same incredible sustain. I wonder if much more compliant rubber on the sturdier stands would enable them to get closer to the flimsy stand. Will try later. ....so I tried sticking dense 1/2" thick foam to the rubber claws on the sturdy stand basket and the sustain and tone was extremely similar to using the flimsy stand.

The difference is night and day! The cheap stand makes the Tom sound so much more fuller and thick. Thanks for this. I’ve been looking for a stand to mount my rack Tom on and didn’t really know there would be much difference in tone. Now I know what to look for 🤘

To my taste, I really hate toms ringing out for long at all, but this is good to know! I like to do similar to what you do on your snare, on my rack tom. I put a mini 4" gong (just acting as a hard object really) on the head which bounces up to allow the full attack but then shortens the sustain.

Puhleese with the tom on a snare stand. "It sounds as if it were suspended in midair"!! I think this was figured out 50 yrs ago by Gauger with Rims. The most ergonomic position for a tom is close to center left of a bass drum. You can pull your hat, the thing we play the most, closer, you can put your ride cymbal, the thing we play 2nd most, to center right.

TNR Products makes Little Booty Shakers; foam pieces that will fit on the arms of any basket stand. Your tom will sing like it does on that last rickety stand you used. Excellent product!

I would suggest that the difference between the stands is not quite what you think. What you're hearing are the vibrations of the drum being reflected back into the drum by the heavier stands. The more mass, the more reflection. If you really want it to ring put three maple blocks between the snare and the stand. You'll be amazed.

Basically: - the DW 3000 series is heavy duty and strong, it will last forever, and it holds the drum tight, but the parts are stiff not allowing the drum to shake, so it muffles and deadens the sound of a tom drum. - the DW 6000 series are more lightweight and it isolates better the drum, allowing it to shake more freely, so the drum resonates better. - the last stand is a very cheap one, and it is all shaky and not very stiff, probably bad for professional use; but because it is very loose, it also lets the drum to resonate a lot. It is important to say that lower tuning (lower frequencies) makes things move more, for example a speaker playing bass tones versus playing treble stuff, so a low tuning tom will probably interact more with the stand.

So much other things involved. Shell roundness, type of heads, tuning, hardware on the shell, hoops, kind of wood, tom mount etc.. Lower tuning no tone no projection en no sustain. Too high tuned the drum will choke. Thanks Stephan 👍
