The hidden technique that makes Chun Li UNSTOPPABLE

Today we're looking at Chun Li in Street Fighter 3: Third Strike! She is well-known to be a top tier character in this game, but is she as easy to play as it looks? I'll be investigating the hit confirm into super technique that is possible for Chun Li due to a glitch with her recovery frames. Hope you enjoy the challenge!

Lol thanks for the shoutout at the beginning. I had a few pieces of supplementary info, hopefully people find it helpful. The total amount of time for Chun's low mk cancel window is 18f. There's 13f to early cancel (this is the same as Ken low mk xx jinrai, which is pretty hard to confirm reliably). Then there's 3 dead frames, where you cannot cancel at all. Then another 2f at the end to finish out the 18f window. Because it's pretty hard to confirm low mk in the initial 13f window, and you can't cancel in the dead window, every Chun aims to land their super cancel inputs in the last 2f. This is known as "late cancel." It also means that unlike most supers, it's possible for your cancel inputs to be too late AND too early. If you cancel your inputs at the end anywhere but those 2f, no super will come out. You can't link low mk into super. It's typically -1 on hit, and only has 2 active frames, so you'll never have enough frame advantage to link it into super. If you see a super come out late and still hit, they probably just cancelled in the late cancel window. In 3rd Strike the UI elements update 1f faster than the character animations. So it's slightly easier to watch the score, lifebar, or stun to get an extra frame to confirm. But in intense footsies situations you can't always spare the moment to look up at the UI, especially on arcade cabinets where the screen is very large and right in your face. So it's something you can do for sure, but probably only when you're confident your opponent won't be moving (her post SA2 set play for example is a really easy situation where you can watch the lifebar). The ability to hit confirm is not what makes Chun players strong or successful, it's just a prerequisite for playing her. If you can't hit confirm at all, it'll be hard to have success with her vs strong opponents. But just learning to hit confirm will not be enough. Ground game, neutral control, and playing around your opponent's parry are a few of the things that separate strong and middling Chuns from each other. The way you tried on hard mode at the end is similar to how I practice these days when I have time for training mode, because it most closely emulates real world experience. Game audio off, listening to distracting noise in my headphones, turn on random guard/hit/parry and only super on hit, watch the character sprite and not the UI, and practice vs both crouching and standing opponents. Of course you can't emulate tourney nerves, which as we saw at Frosty, hit everyone hard no matter what, and everyone will miss a few things even if they do it well in casuals or training mode. Thanks for the video.

While the crouch medium kick>super combo is very important for chun li I think you're overfixating on it. She has several other ways to confirm into it like from back heavy punch, close heavy kick, standing and crouching light punch etc. She also has one of the best supers to whiff punish with as it's very fast and has lots of invlun to get through fireballs or more active buttons
@NeoBoneGirl
@NeoBoneGirl 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that with 2MK > super, it stops characters from wanting to walk forward for fear of getting hit by the super and taking a ton of damage, which lets Chun Li sit back and get even more meter. It’s possible for her to get it otherwise, and it’s a good super on its own, but this confirm synergizes with basically all of her kit and the system mechanics.
@PSNMyfoot
@PSNMyfoot 2 жыл бұрын
It has no invul at all. And cr.MK xx SA2 mixed with Kara throw is her whole game plan. Those other buttons do cancel into super (cl.HK needs a workaround tho) but they are not for hitconfirming, they are for punishing. Her whole midrange threat is cr.MK vs Kara throw. As for actual confirming, meaty UOH and very meaty st.HK/6HK are the only other options.

Personally, I would say yes Chun Li is very easy to pick up and win especially if you're already familiar with 3s fundamentals. Back when I was playing with my older bro, Chun was banned as a first pick and we decided she could only be selected if one of us was in a losing streak Yun, also a top tier requires more work to really show that he's a top tier due to Genei Jin setups Justin Wong showed a video of him winning a casual match using only one button, mk. That's how easy she is to use.

So to cancel crouching MKick, or anything really, into super, do you qcf MKick but hit it MK early so it hits while crouching, then do it again to cancel? That's how I've learned it recently it's just hard to be consistent with it since I do mess it up/I can't react fast enough to notice the block and go into it. I also see ppl canceling into super from standing back heavy punch but I cannot find a video/anything that helps.

While i don't disagree, this is another FGC term that you should have included in that video explaining esoteric fighting game terms and people using them incorrectly. Like i said i dont disagree in this case it just made me think that i have probably seen yt videos calling pretty much every character at one point or another "broken". So i guess the entire cast is broken? Same with SSF2X. They're all broken. Everytime a character has say an overpowered single move, or a glitch or anything that isn't perfectly neutral balanced, they are "broken". I think the whole term is just way overused and incorrectly used. A good example of an actual broken character i think would be Akuma in ST. But just because claw or Sagat is strong doesn't mean they're broken.

@OrtadragoonX
@OrtadragoonX 2 жыл бұрын
She’s still a strong character. But she’s not an absolute monster without SA2. Without meter she’s low A tier. Her EX moves aren’t that big of a deal because you need save meter for SA2. Her damage output isn’t that good because you don’t want to use EX in combos. I would argue that both Ken and Yun (without Jenei Ken) and even Makoto are stronger characters overall if Chin doesn’t have a bar. Especially Makoto. People really sleep on her too when she doesn’t have meter, but her random hits do a grip of damage. She can work magic without using supers. Chun holds with them primarily thanks to her strong neutral. It’s her key attribute without SA2 and the gameplan is to use her enormous normals (her hit boxes are really stupid, like Back HP hits deceptively far) to keep the opponent and bay and build meter. Once you have SA2, she turns into S+ tier really fast. I’d really call it God Tier. The only other character with that sort of transformation with meter is Yun. Jenei-Ken is heavily oppressive and he builds it in two BnB combos. Back when I was playing 3rd Strike heavily, I always feared Yun players despite maining Chun. Yun is terrifying to play against; it’s nightmarish. I also feared SA1 Makoto players (I’m no where near pro or semi pro level and most of the people I played against weren’t either, but we were at the enthusiast level) because throwing out a random neutral move that was parried meant death. Same with Hugo Gigas players too.
