I caught the High Kings in Cincinnati the winter before Martin Furey departed the band, and I have to confess that I tuned out once he left because - while I love them all - he was my favorite. Hearing this take on Caledonia by their newest member Paul has brought me back. I wish I hadn’t stopped paying attention. While I’d still love to hear Martin’s take on this song, Paul’s vocal on this is magical, and I can’t stop listening to it. I’m going to have to go back and see what they’ve been up to in my absence.

I don't know if you can see the changes that have been over me These past few days I've been afraid that I might drift away been telling old stories, singing songs that make me think about where I come from that's the reasons why I seem so far away today let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time Caledonia, you're calling me and now I'm going home I never shall become a stranger, it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had I have moved and kept on moving, provеd the points that I needed proving Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way I have kissed the girls and left them crying, stolen dreams, yes there's no denying I have travelled hard, sometimes with conscience flying somewhere in the wind Let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time Caledonia, you're calling me and now I'm going home I never shall become a stranger, it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had I am sitting here before the fire, an empty room, a forest choir The flames that couldn't get any higher, they've withered, now they've gone But I'm steady thinking, my way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow, I will disappear Let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time Caledonia, you're calling me and now I'm going home I never shall become a stranger, it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever Let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time Caledonia, you're calling me and now I'm going home I never shall become a stranger, it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

I was recently in a play about a romance set in Scotland. I actually was able to travel to Scotland to perform it at the Edinburgh fringe festival. I didn't find this song till after the show, but it sums up the feelings so well.

Whenever I see or hear of one of the old traditional pubs of Dublin founded in the mid 1800s I don’t think of the time I went there. Instead I wonder if my great grandfather, born in Dublin and educated at Trinity ever had a pint there. This guy had a legend worthy life including sailing around the Horn to India and fighting in the Union Navy at Mobile Bay, finally becoming a Texan, but it all started in Dublin!

I just seen them live last night and absolutely feel in love with this song, I'd never heard him doing a solo. Now I will have to find all the songs he's singing. They all have great voices but his fits this song perfectly, absolutely breathtaking and reminds me of my hometown and my homesickness i have had to deal with.

Don't take me wrong, I love the High Kings but this cover just doesn't sound right. I think it is a little too fast. And no it has nothing to do with Irish singing a Scottish song because the Dolores Keane cover is great.
