The dovetail slide lever barrel release models are older. Just picked up a Supermatic with the slide lever, ported bull barrel, slide lock and adjustable sights. After doing some research, I learned it was made in 1951, the original year of production. Made in New Haven, the original factory. Love it! Shooting it for the first time today. This video was very helpful in understanding what I was buying.

Thanks for all the info Michael. Really helps me understand the High Standard more. I just found a nickel/stainless Sport King at an antique shop for $580. and jumped on it. Looks brand new, black grips with the serial letter as G1138. and believe it was produced around 1974 or 75. This is my 2nd High Standard in my collection and really enjoy them. Thank you again for all your insight !! Greg

Thanks for the info Michael! I have a sport king that I inherited. Very clean, doesn't look like it was ever fired more than a couple mags worth. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the mag for it, so I picked one up at a gun show recently for $50(original). Can't wait to take it out!

Just received one of these from my sister in law who doesn't remember where she got it. It was in a generic gun case with no documentation. Thanks for explaining the differences. The gun has been very neglected. She ran about 400 rounds of ammo through it in a 10 year period and didn't clean it once. The barrel was stuck to the frame because of that. Took a bit of gun oil, time, and a few light taps from a rubber mallet to finally free it up. The back slide was really sticky until I oiled it, now it's fine. Definitely for right hand shooters the way the grip is shaped though.

I inherited my father's HD Military and also have a Model GD that I bought from a guy that I deer hunted with. The HD was used by my father as a Bullseye gun in the 60s and he won dozens of trophies and medals with it. I still like to take them out to the range just for the fun of it as my competitive shooting is open class IPSC, so it's fun to sometimes just go out and go slow and have fun plus they make great guns to start new shooters.

Michael Bell Quick question, I notice national magazine and triple K on the web, and I assume the magazines out of the new Texas based high standard would work. What do you find works best?
@MichaelBellmbell5569 жыл бұрын
Miss ShadowWalker When I bought guns I always looked for ones offered with more than one magazine. All of my magazines are vintage. There are subtle differences between some of the models. I think as long as you tell them which model you have then they should work. If you do buy some after market mags please let us know how they work. What model and what features does your High Standard pistol have?

This is a very informative video. I take it that you love the High Standard pistols, which is very understandable. I, however have a much earlier model H.S. HD Military grade with a long barrel that was supposedly used for training the troops in just about every member whether it was the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or whatever. They were used extensively for training for accuracy and handling. It is an awesome pisto; with a very heavy barrel and still shoots excellently. Maybe you could do a video on earlier models, that would be awesome.

It is obvious you take great pride in your High Standard pistols and they look to be in beautiful condition. I have a Sport King, which was manufactured in the early 70's. A friend gave it to me, as he no longer wanted it. His son had left it in the woods for several weeks. I did would I could with steel wool and WD40, and it actually shoots quite well. It doesn't look too great, though. Nice video

+Rory Gallagherfan Thanks! I would not worry about the surface rust as long as it functions well. If you keep it clean and lubed it will serve you well. They are comfortable guns to shoot, and easy to clean. That was a nice gift to receive. I just received a Winchester model 190 rifle as a gift. It was stored in a sealed case and had considerable surface rust but as I inspected it internally, it appeared to have been shot very little if at all.. I have done as you did just cleaned and lubed it. Have not got to shoot it yet but expect it will shoot well. It's nice when you receive an unexpected gift that is fun to use. Better than a tie!!

The only Hi Standard pistols I could find are at my local gun place. They have been there since the 1940,s and are still going strong thankfully. They had a Supermatic Citation and Supermatic Citation ll. I got the first one because it is in like new condition with 4 magazines. It is a beautiful gun and a real great one to shoot. It’s right there with my S&W Performance Center 41, Buckmark Hunter, Woodsman Target, and Target Champion for trigger quality and accuracy. I may go get the Supermatic Citation ll soon if it just continues to sit there. However they will need to lower the price a bit because of it’s condition. I have an original Sport King and a Browning Nomad, neither of which have slide stops nor stay open after the last shot. On KZfaq I saw someone using plastic drywall anchors from Amazon as snap caps. These can be loaded in the Sport King and Nomad as well as any other .22 LR auto magazines and cycle just fine. At the range I load the snap cap as the first round in the mag, then fill the rest with live ammunition. No round counting. No dry fires. Cheap solution! Thanks!

Very helpful video. Do you ever have issues with the mags falling out, or dovetailing with the original mag? If so, which does it the least? What ammo do you find fits these best? I have experienced modern ammo not fitting as well in vintage guns.

I have not had mags fall out. I try to keep the original mag with the specific gun. Mags do not interchange as well as you think they should. Federal bulk has a small slightly "pointy" projectile and works well for me in these pistols.

Unfortunately, he was unable to really care for it towards the end and it has some minor surface rust. I was trying to determine how to swap barrels when I found this video. Unfortunately the barrel release is stuck but at least I now know how it is supposed to work. I am guessing some penetrating oil, some time and some persuasion will be necessary to remove and really clean the gun up. Hopefully she will be ready to rock in a few weeks.

I had a HS Trophy Matic during the late 70s. On sand bag rest the gun would shoot groups almost one hole at 25 yards and believe it or not I used Federal High velocity ammo. Federal doesn't make the same ammo as they did back then. Mine was made in Hamden, CN. When High Standard went BK, they moved to Texas and later I purchased one made there. It was a piece of junk by jams and accuracy and at 25 yards my Ruger MK2 would out shoot it.

Hi Michael! Great video! I have my grandfather's High Standard Sport King, and a few questions... 1. Do you know of anywhere I can get left-handed grips? The thumb rest on the the left side of the gun makes it hard for a lefty! 2. How can I I find the year that mine was produced? 3.Do you know where I can find extra magazines? 4. Mine seems to be a competition model, has a very long barrel (without actually measuring maybe 7 1/4"). Do you know where I can find a different barrel to have threaded for a suppressor? I'm pretty sure you actually answered all my questions in your video, but I am super hard of hearing... Thank you for everything!

Thanks Daniel. 1) You may be able to get grips that are smooth on both sides, getting rid of the thumb rest. Look at GunBroker. 2) Google using the serial # and model to research the "date of manufacture" 3) Magazines may be found on GunBroker. Make sure they are for your specific model. Triple K also makes some. If you buy yhem from Brownell's and they don't fit, you can return them. 4) The barrel depends on if it has the stud . Numrich has the stud type of barrels. Otherwise you can keep searching on GunBroker for someone to put one up for bid. Thanks for watching!

very informative video. love it. I inherit a High standard Victor from my dad and from some document stuck in his old gun case, it was bought in the USA around 1970s. (I'm in Thailand, BTW). it still shoot great except some brand of ammo feed high and stuck. seems like when the slide was not recoiled (like after dryfire or after a dud), it need a lot of force to pull the slide. is this normal? appreciate any suggestion. about 7 years ago, bought a barrel weight for victor from a website but it won't fit. screw slot seems to misalign or the weight was intended for the newer reproduction.
@MichaelBellmbell5565 жыл бұрын
Do not dryfire these pistols. As far as the ammo, pick the brand that works the best for your pistol and just use that. Make sure you clean and lube the gun well before firing and see if it still sticks after a dud, but again, do not dryfire.

Hey Micheal I'm back: Regarding the Hi-STD 22Lr Supermatic and Field King New Heartford 51/52 models with delayed blow back feature and interchangeable barrels; CCI Blazer STD velocity 1050 fps 40 grain ammo works great in them. DO NOT use Hi-Velocity 36 grain ammo as it will cause malfunctions and pound the pistol to death. ;o)

Any idea where to look for extra mags? Need a couple for an SK-100. ALSO, almost everything I'm seeing online is suggesting you NOT fire high power rounds in these things. I think I would stick with .22 L , not LR or mini mag type ammo.

Great video. It did answer many questions. The category of these pistols is confusing to the beginner. I have my eye on one it’s been in my local gun shop for at least a year. Now I have additional info. So thank you. I remember I glanced at it a few weeks ago and it had a ported barrel so I’m guessing it’s one of the higher end versions. However if I recall correctly it did say sport king on it. I’ll have to check it out again my next visit. The only features I’m interested in are removable barrels and slide hold open. In California we can’t have suppressors so that’s a none issue in my case. I’m guessing the higher end ones have all the same features as the mid range guns plus additional accessories. Heavy barrels with weights or longer Barrels etc.. is that correct?
@MichaelBellmbell5562 жыл бұрын
I believe that is correct.

I looked at the pistol I mentioned yesterday it’s a field king Heavy barrel with oval slot ports two one on each side, in a V configuration looking down the barrel on either side of the front sight. It has bolt release, and a slide off type barrel not the post/ stud type. 6 3/4 in. barrel and adjustable rear sight. It’s in very good to excellent condition. Is the field king a step up from the sport king type ??? This one I’m looking at has the features I want.

Any ideas? should I squirt some clp in there it's like not moving whatsoever. Gin is in good shape it appears to be functional not mind condition but close to it. thanks for any help.

Use any penetrating oil and let it sit for a day or so. Then use a plastic hammer, hold the pistol in your hand with the button facing up and hit only the button with the plastic hammer. This will break it free. It may still be very hard to push it in all the way to release the barrel but it will work. Once you get the barrel off, disassemble, clean and oil everything. Then go shoot it and repeat. If you use it, it will get easier to break down. I have been there on a few of my high standards. :o)
@AnupongT5 жыл бұрын
I saw in some other VDO that they recommend tapping the barrel release button, and the frame around it, lightly with rubber or plastic hammer. then push the barrel release button on a hard surface, like edge of a table, while holding the barrel. that's how I do it to release mine after some time of storage. if the barrel was recently release, the button would be easier to push.

I've got one with the lever, but barrel weights are in the way (so I can't tell) and I've tried pull out and up. Does not move. Sure I can do a cleaning rod or snake if I had to. Seems to be all original as sturdy as heck, but going to need cleaning at some point. Guess either rubber mallet or short dowel and light hammer. But remove weights first, I think, to see what its config is before I go mucking it up.

One thing you don't get into is the Delayed Blow Back extended breach and recessed bolt feature of the 51/ 52 Hi-STD Supermatic and Field King models. Field King not to be confused with the the Sport King although they did overlap when the factory moved from New Heartford. These 51/52 Hi-STD Browning designed delayed blow back semi-auto target 22Lr pistols died because they were too expensive to produce. They offered higher muzzle velocity and cleaner operation. Needless to say the American Marine Core won the 1958 Olympics in this category using the 51/52 Browning designed Supermatic 22Lr pistol. The Hi-STD 51/52 Supermatic and Field King were undoubtedly the BEST Browning designed 22Lr Target Pistol ever made better then the famous FN Browning productions .

The "Supermatic" was only made between mid 1951 and 52 along the later model the "Field King" to about mid 1953 - Both had the recessed bolt for the delayed blow back feature - These are the only true Supermatics with exchangeable delayed blow back barrels. At 10:10 that's a 1953 "Field King" with the delayed blow back feature - Could have been mislabeled as a "Sport King" when the plant was cutting manufacturing costs. To cut costs, Hi-STD introduced the Sport King - Citation...etc models without the delayed Blow Back feature and added the Supermatic idiom for advertising.
