Tang Ping is a Chinese slang neologism that describes a personal rejection of societal pressures to overwork and over-achieve. Tang Ping means choosing to "lie down flat and get over the beatings" via a low-desire, more indifferent attitude towards life.
Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche reminds us that achieving Tang Ping is not an easy task. To achieve Tang Ping, one must possess savviness and strategic thinking. The modern education system, our values, and our self-consciousness all present obstacles to practicing Tang Ping. Rinpoche introduced Asrama, the four stages of life in ancient Indian culture, which could represent the highest form of Tang Ping.

❤❤❤The four stages of life according to traditional Indian wisdom (often rooted in Hindu philosophy) are called the "Ashramas." They are: ❤Brahmacharya (Student Phase): This stage begins in childhood and lasts until about 25 years old. During this period, the individual dedicates themselves to acquiring knowledge, developing character, and understanding their duty. ❤Grihastha (Householder Phase): This stage generally spans from young adulthood through middle age (about ages 25-50). The individual establishes a family, pursues a career, and contributes to the community. ❤Vanaprastha (Hermit or Forest Dweller Phase): This is the stage where one begins to withdraw from the material world, usually after becoming a grandparent or once one's duties as a householder have lessened. People in this stage often turn their thoughts to deeper spiritual matters. ❤Sannyasa (Renunciation or Ascetic Phase): In this final stage, an individual renounces all material desires and concerns to focus wholly on the spiritual, often leading a life of contemplation and meditation.
