I know this isn't for everyone, but tbh The SpongeBob Musical they made for Broadway feels soooooooo much more like a movie in the spirit of the show. Like if you wanna see something that takes after season 1-3 I really think the musical is a great time. Esp compared to these movies, I don't begrudge anyone for liking them obviously, but I just don't gel with "new spongebob" even at its best

The video game adaptation of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) has a different ending, where SpongeBob isn't manager at all The video game was also released A MONTH before the actual movie (October 2004), so people spoiled the movie (kinda) relentlessly. The different ending was most likely something for Paramount so people won't spoil the actual ending of the film (SpongeBob becomes manager), kinda genius.

Tbh I disagree with your take on Sponge out of water. That movie knows exactly what it is: A bunch of random shit that all ties together somehow. It's *not* intended to be taken seriously. It was created to be completely absurd, and it accomplishes that. The movie isn't objectively bad just because it has no inherent meaning. Most people overhate Sponge out of water just because they don't like absurdism and/or because it isn't the first movie imo.

I like to believe SpongeBob & Patrick are teenagers who act like kids. Fits the first movie’s theme of maturity & how it relates to teenagers. Edit: I personally think Season 4 was the last season of the “Golden Era” of SpongeBob. While it’s clear the season was the show started to have some cracks, it had a lot of good episodes like Have You Seen This Snail? Krusty Towers, and even one of my favorites… Patrick Smartpants.

While the 1st movie was meant to be the finale, most people get It confused as the canonical finale even though it has been disproven several times. People use the argument that the Krusty Krab 2 Isn't In any other episode but It's not like Spongebob was ever a series that cared about continuity all that much.

The fact that the third movie is so bad that it retroactively makes me rethink the second movie more is hilarious. Also, I really miss the creative trailers the original movie had, with the theater, the mermaid ticket taker, the Hunt for Red October, the popcorn-munching whale…the jellyfish…the girls… …the second movie only had the spoof posters and the third one didn’t even bother. Another movie duology that kind of works is the Rugrats movie.

I have hope for the fourth theatrical movie because several key pre-movie crew members are returning, including Derek Drymon as director. Nothing will ever top the first movie but I hope bringing back the old team will help. Drymon was basically the show runner alongside Hillenburg in pre-movie so he should know what he would have wanted.

I like your video. Just a couple of things I'd like to point out : -Post movie spongebob isn't just one big bad era that has its moments. Season 4 and 5 are pretty good. Seasons 6-8 were terrible with a couple of good episodes in them. And the first half of season 9 (that was pretty middle of the road) was before the second movie. And no the animation wasn't expressive at that time. That was after the second movie. -the second movie isn't bad AT all. You might think it tries to be a couple dozen different movies at once but it's all a big adventure about teamwork. Not to mention how funny and witty the humor in it is in comparison to the first movie which the humor in it was a bit infantile and leaned more towards being childish. It's arguably better and funnier than the first movie. The only thing that probably feels out of nowhere is the superhero stuff. They should've foreshadowed that earlier in the movie (it was supposed to be in a deleted scene) Stephen Hillenburg worked on the movie and then returned to the show and the quality of the show improved alot it had a lot of good episodes until his death halfway through season 12.

All 3 movies are great. The next one will likely be great and well.

I feel like Sponge out of water is better in its first half, the 2d part. I never went to see the movie when it released, but when it played on TV after years, I didn't understand that this was the movie with the 3d "Marvel" heroes. They kinda just threw them in the last 20 minutes. Only then I realised that "hey that's the Sponge out of water movie, I saw an ad in the TV about that". So funny story about Sponge Out of Water: Because Nickelodeon plays movies in the evenings, and the only interesting channels on hotel cable channels are kids' channels, I have seen Sponge Out of Water around 5 times, cuz they played it for a week straight while on vacation. Same with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

I don’t hate Sponge on the Run, but I don’t love it either, i could take it or leave it. The gimmick that the movie is sold on kinda feels like an afterthought at best, tacked on to the end so they could put it in trailers. However it’s way better than Sponge on the Run I’ll give you that

While I always thought the first SpongeBob movie was good and wouldn't argue against it still being one of the best Nickelodeon Movies, I've actually found myself to enjoy Sponge Out of Water just a bit above it now for various reasons I can list: - Main thing to get out of the way is that the second movie uses the show's well-established Krabby Patty secret formula as the main MacGuffin for the characters to get back while it was King Neptune's crown for the first one, with the quest to retrieve said crown driving much of the plot of the first movie. There's just one thing though: the King Neptune we see depicted in the movie is clearly not the same guy who appeared previously in the series, which I'm sure must have always been to the confusion of fans even back when the movie first came out (there is a behind-the-scenes explanation for the change but the movie itself doesn't explain it). Truth is it's only because they changed King Neptune to be bald that a lot of the first movie even worked at all, while Sponge Out of Water doesn't have as many obvious inconsistencies with the show to ask fans to look past. - They went to the trouble of introducing a brand new character to be the main villain after the first movie just used Plankton, leading to a more interesting scenario where SpongeBob and Plankton have to put aside their usual differences on the show and work together as a "te-am" to get the formula back. - Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy all get to have larger roles in the second one and be more involved in the story as they join SpongeBob later in the film. It pretty much goes without saying that Krabs' role for most of the first movie was being frozen in ice while Squidward and Sandy later ended up just becoming part of Plankton's mind-controlled army. - SpongeBob and Patrick only got to be up on the surface briefly for the first movie while it was obviously a major part of the second movie. Even with the biggest gimmick and selling point of Sponge Out of Water being that the characters become 3D in the live-action world the majority of the film itself is in actuality the same traditional 2D animation as the first movie and main series, and the general idea of the characters changing into a different medium in live-action is really not that far off from what was seen in episodes like "Pressure" when they were stick puppets. - The fact that Plankton's whole driving scheme in the first movie was listed as Plan Z was one of the strongest implications that the movie is meant to take place at the very end of the series timeline-wise, and I do know that Stephen Hillenburg did intend on ending the series with the first movie originally before Nick wanted it to continue. Sponge Out of Water on the other hand is a SpongeBob movie that feels like it could be watched at any point during the series. - A magical talking cosmic space dolphin named Bubbles who watches over the universe? C'mon, how could you not love a concept like that? One so perfectly absurd and fitting for SpongeBob SquarePants. Overall I do think of Sponge Out of Water as a perfect middle ground out of the SpongeBob movies we currently have, between not feeling as inconsistent with the show compared to the first movie and still being a mostly 2D movie when the movies to follow it like Sponge on the Run just seem to be wanting to go the completely 3D route for the foreseeable future. Now is "Goofy Goober Rock" something that the first movie still has over all the others? Yeah, sure.
