LYRICS
I was a Highwoman
And a mother from my youth
For my children I did what I had to do
My family left Honduras when they killed the Sandinistas
We followed a coyote through the dust of Mexico
Every one of them except for me survived
And I am still alive
I was a healer
I was gifted as a girl
I laid hands upon the world
Someone saw me sleeping naked in the noon sun
I heard "witchcraft" in the whispers and I knew my time had come
The bastards hung me at the Salem gallows hill
But I am living still
I was a freedom rider
When we thought the South had won
Virginia in the spring of '61
I sat down on the Greyhound that was bound for Mississippi
My mother asked me if that ride was worth my life
And when the shots rang out I never heard the sound
But I am still around
And I'll take that ride again
And again
And again
And again
And again
I was a preacher
My heart broke for all the world
But teaching was unrighteous for a girl
In the summer I was baptized in the mighty Colorado
In the winter I heard the hounds and I knew I had been found
And in my Savior's name, I laid my weapons down
But I am still around
We are The Highwomen
Singing stories still untold
We carry the sons you can only hold
We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations
It may return to us as tiny drops of rain
But we will still remain
And we'll come back again and again and again
And again and again
We'll come back again and again and again
And again and again

I cry every freaking time I hear this song. The verse with the Freedom Riders KILLS me...we've come a long ways but still have a so far to go. Someday we will learn to love good people, just for being good people...I hope we learn this before it's too late. Respect and peace to you all

When I hear this song I think of every woman who nurtured me, gave me strength when I had none and refused to give up on me when I had no faith in myself. This song embodies the strength, courage and power of the woman of the world. I think of my mother who taught remedial kids how to express themselves- a true warrior for the rights of women. I think of my sisters, my wife and my female friends without whom I would quite possibly be an empty shell. Very few songs have touched me like this one. Peace and Love to The Highwomen. Never turn away.

I think of the song and group this was based on, and how none of the woman would be anything without the men that built this country, and how neither the man or woman would be anything without the other. Peace and love to the Highwaymen and RIP Waylon and J.R.!

Amanda is such a class act. A gifted musician and an incredible lyricist. A few years back I was able to give her a small ratty bundle of flowers at a Jason Isbell concert in Reading, PA around Valentine’s Day. She graciously took them and briefly talked with me from the stage. She could not have been nicer. We appreciate and support all her activism. She and Jason have brought so much joy into our lives especially since hearing her and Jason sing songs that resonate so much with our family. My daughter suffers from anxiety and depression and a lot of what they write about touches and soothes our souls in dealing with our daughter. We love Amanda and Jason like family and everyone should see them and the boys in concert at least once. There is always hope in the world as long as we have Amanda and Jason in it. God keep you always. I really enjoyed Jason’s interview with George Saunders a few years back and I believe Jason is wrong about one thing. I believe he does have a book to be written. I believe the story of his life, the stories of the road, the story of his demons need to be put to paper. I hope I live long enough for 2 things. First that Jason will sign my Reunions album so I can complete my collection and second, that I can read Jason’s memoirs. Miss seeing you Amanda. The Jason concerts have been awesome but we miss seeing that violin stand when we roll in. Have a great 2022

I'm glad to find a kindrid spirit that feels the same way I do about Amanda and Jason. OMg so cool you got to talk to her at a concert!! I love Amanda and Jason so much. I feel like i know them through their songs, hope to get to meet them one day at a concert. Love THe Highwomen and this song is great. I thought the original was great, but this is rewritten for the modern age. I'm taking up fiddle because of Amanda's beautiful playing. I love her albums, her singing and lyrics, they just touch my soul. I alsolove Jason songs especially Anxiety and Running With OUr Eyes Closed.

@@doloreserin The show photographer took a picture of Amanda shaking my hand and talking to me at the edge of the stage after a Jason show outside of NYC. Unfortunately my pumpkin head looks so huge I hate myself. She is genuinely an amazing person We were helped by some Irish insiders to the concert door for Jason’s show in Dublin. It was our anniversary and we chose Dublin to specifically spend the day with Jason. Finally Jason exited the door and a group of about 12 of us corralled him. He took photos and signed for everyone. Finally at our turn he took a picture with both my wife and I and signed the set list I got. I was talking a mile and minute and told him we came on our anniversary. Jason never says much and he heard my rambling without saying anything. After he finished with us and was signing another he looked up at me and said “happy anniversary “. Something we will always treasure. Sadly like 2 dumb asses, we think Jason actually walked to his hotel (will never happen now) and he was staying at our hotel. Had we stayed until he was finished we could have walked back together. It was only a 5-10 minute walk BUT it would have been awesome. We’ve been married 34 years and I think if my wife ever left me it would be for Jason. Honestly he’s so amazing I would have to approve. These days it’s nearly impossible to meet him. 2 idiots in NYC stalked him to sell signed albums on eBay so I think that has ruined it for the average fan. I hope you meet him someday as well. He was so kind and genuine. Truly nice and respectful. I wish we knew people who knew people because we would love to tell him how much he is woven into our lives. We just bought ridiculously priced front row seats for the upcoming show in LA for my wife’s birthday. I’m dealing with some major health issues and not sure about the future. I definitely can’t do a standing venue. My wife loves him so much and I don’t want to disappoint her so I’m trying to hit the seated venues so she gets her Jason fill. It would be cool to attend a show with you. There are several people we met at shows who we attend shows with. Stay in touch if you’d like. I can give you updates about experiences. So glad you are a fan of the both of them

This song almost made me drive off the road first time I heard it. It made be sink deep into all kinds of thought, none of which was about driving or the road. Some kind of muscle memory or subconcious started to take the turn slowly. It snapped me out of it and startled me, and I overcorrected. Went back and forth for a split moment before I could get my bearings. Had I not taken that turn 1000 times before, I'd end up in the ditch. Nothing violent, nothing dangerous. Lonely road. Might even been able to reverse right back up again. Never had an accident in my life. I always thought it would be some tight-butt summer-girl that would make me forget to break, but nope. It was a god damn history lesson. Delivered in a way that I had no defense. I was mesmerized.

I wish that Marin had a verse she could sing when someone guests, like this. Perhaps, “ I was a teacher, teaching kids to read and write. Sharing love and light. Late one morning, a gunman burst into the classroom, I tried to save them, doing everything I could. They say I died, saving three with my body, but I’m not gone for good.”

This performance brings tears to my eyes, and I don't cry easily. Listened to The Highwayman before this, with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. That is a great, beautiful song, but this version gave me a much stronger emotional reaction. My favorite line is "In my saviors name, I layed my weapons down." I'm not even religious.

While practicing songs with chords here, relearning where all my fingers go for chords 50 years after I stopped playing guitar. Life, children, work ,children, work, grandchildren, health. All this things seemed more important than playing my guitar. While looking for more songs I came across these very talented women. I think I'm inspired even more. This is a beautiful version of the song sang by the Highway Man. I like this more than the original. Now, for the next item on my bucket list. Piano, another instrument that got put by the wayside while living life. So many things I want to concur before time takes it's toll.

I have loved the Highwaymen‘s version for years, but this one always give me shivers, goosebumps and even tears. What a band of highly gifted and talented women presenting a very different female perspective. I am so grateful to my daughter who introduced the Highwomen to her boomer father. After viewing all the other versions here on YT over and over again and, of course, to the album version I really think this one is the best. Unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the pond hoping for a European Tour, although it doesn‘t look very likely to happen.

I love this song so much, as well as the original. Brandi Carlile is obviously a musical genius. I’m assuming she put this together. What’s interesting to me is that the majority of people singing, playing, and listening to this song are Christians who don’t believe in reincarnation. But that’s what this song is about. I definitely believe in reincarnation, so it has a lot of meaning for me. Thank you, Brandi, for introducing this song to a new generation. The lyrics are even more emotional than the original. 🩷 P.S. Amanda Shires is also credited as a writer. Beautiful work, women. 💚

This version has no business being so good and powerful. It gives me chills and I hold my tears. Four stories of strugle and bravery told with elegance and gentleness of true women, and without harshness of modern feminism.

Every artist who has recorded a song with the same name as their band, that is invariably their best song - discuss! Definitely true with this lot. Bad Company, Black Sabbath, I could go on. Anyway, this is great 👍

I am pretty sure that is Jason Isbell in the background playing guitar fills on a Strat. If I am a right, it just makes my heart swell to se this amazingly talented man to stand back while his wife takes her turn in the spotlight.

It absolutely is. I saw Jason with Amanda and the 400 unit at Red Rocks in 2019, just before the pandemic. Best show I have ever seen. Check out a version of her 'Wasted and Rollin' with him on guitar.

I saw Brandi in Wichita Ks. She opened for Jonny Lang. Never heard of her, but, after hearing her, I KNEW it wouldn't be the last time I'd see or hear from her again. What a talent. Amanda....Bless her heart.
