Finally a company that charges realistic prices for small sleeper trailers. I never understood the point of a $30K teardrop trailer when you could just buy a van or large SUV and outfit it for the same or less money. At 5 to 10K, these make a lot of sense for people who want something small and light.
@James-il3tq
@James-il3tq 4 жыл бұрын
Let's see... Larger vehicle's cost more for fuel, repairs, insurance, more difficult to drive and park, don't fit some garages. Also "outfitting" a larger SUV how? By adding a tent attachment? You're left with a soft top tent and sleeping in your SUV. Much less storage, no protection from harsh elements, animals, theft, bugs, noise. Hot weather you'll be roasting, cold weather you'll be freezing. Trailers also offer noise insulation, more room, power fans for airflow, heaters, power, fridge/freezer, toilet/shower, stove and much more storage. Big differences. Big part of cost for these little campers is the lightweight materials that so typical SUVs these days can tow them. I myself have a 2019 Rav4 for day to day and bought a 2016 Prolite Mini for $12,000 last summer (1050lbs dry) for our weekend trips to mountains. Easy to tow, easy setup and small enough to park in our driveway and still park our SUVs in garage!

@@James-il3tq The thing that I think many people don't always get is what you're looking at. This isn't the first affordable offroading/overlanding teardrop/small camper out there. Not even close. Maybe really good quality, value, customizability? But not the first, not by a longshot. I'm not trying to necessarily justify the prices, but I think people need to take stock of what they're looking for. If you're a very barebones camper type person and you don't want every gadget under the sun for maximum comfort on your trailer, then just don't buy a heavy duty offroader loaded with gadgets and gizmos. Really. If you don't want it or get it chances are you aren't the demographic it's being marketed to. It's like buying a car. If the car is all you care about and you don't need the best trim level with every option under the sun, then spend less money! Fine! But don't go on and on about how you 'don't understand' the product and 'don't get' how that price could be charged for it. Prices are by nature a subjective taste. Every product has someone to sell to. Maybe you really like small vehicles and pushing the boundary of how small you can get and price isn't really an object for you when it comes to camping and going everywhere you want. BRS Offroad, TVAN, Black Series - expensive and small campers sure but loaded with features, quality, and some of the best in lightweight materials that push the boundaries of just how much a small camper can be. Sherpa, Hiker, Bear, Terradrop, these can also all get the job done, and just as well, but that simplicity doesn't always appeal to people who want more of a lifestyle from their camper.

@@theinstitute1324 Good comment. My wife and I travel extensively, pulling a nucamp t@b 400 boon dock lite. This is our second trailer, our first was a smaller 320 CS-S. What we personally found was the smaller rig was nice for a couple of trips, then we had some bad weather and were basically stuck inside. That's when you come to either appreciate what you have, or in our case, realize what we had wasn't meeting our needs. After a year, we knew we needed something light weight, affordable, something that offered enough space inside where we could be comfortable on a rainy day, a separate eating and sleeping area, and a wet bath. For us, the 400 answered all of that. I didn't need a special tow vehicle, it's fairly light weight coming in just under 3000lbs empty. Has a just under queen size bed, a small separate eating area and wet bath. Solar provides power to everything except the A/C, so we are particular when we go boon docking weather wise. As for the above VAN comment; on our last outing a brand new Sportsmobile parked next to us. Once upon a time a Sportsmobile had been our dream RV, but it was just too expensive. Naturally, we got to talking to the owners and of course comparing rigs. Great couple, showed us all the cool stuff about their rig but when my wife asked about a wet bath, the lady (wives were about the same age) said she didn't want one at the time. They have an outdoor shower but no toilet. I think they paid somewhere around 100k for their van. The group then moved over to our 400 and the wives disappeared inside. About 10-mins later they came out and the first thing she said was "they have a shower and toilet and they don't have to make the bed up if they want to sit and eat". She admitted she regretted not getting a wet bath or even a cassette toilet. Laughing she said it made sense until about day 4-when she had to pee and had to go outside in the rain. My suggestion to anything thinking about a small RV or trailer is to rent one and experiment with it. Everything is always great on beautiful sunny days, but think about the process of setting up or breaking camp in the rain, or what you'll do if your stuck inside for a day.

@@James-il3tq You'd be surprised what one can do with a good work van. Hell, most camper vans are just modified work vans. Of course, that requires having a work van. . Ultimately, though, if someone can't afford to buy a dedicated vehicle, they have to go with options they can afford that work with that they've got, right? That's definitely where these small, light trailers come in. A lot of people don't seem to get that for some reason.

VERY nice indeed. For those who think these are all too expensive, consider this. There are people who live in places that don't allow vehicle/trailer construction on site. For storage facilities, you can't work on or build what you're storing- you have to take the trailer and supplies to an off-road place (which means you need hand tools, battery operated tools, generator, etc. There are also people who don't have the skills, time or money to buy all the items necessary to build their own. Buying a basic model to learn from and then upgrade as skills, time, money allow is a great way to go.

A nearly naked cargo trailer of similar size is in the same price category and you have to work on it some to resemble something to camp in. As for the tent, I would relegate that to day use to hang out, eat, and so on. Jmho, ymmv, fwiw, etc.

Many trailers are expensive because you pay for ultra light materials so they're towable, especially if for today's common SUVs that can only tow 1500-3500lbs. You also get a comfortable bed, windows that open with screens, power air vent (which makes ALL the time in summer), furnace (again needed in cold climate), water, sink, fridge/freezer, lights, stove, table, lots of storage, protection from harsh elements, animals, noise, etc. Tenting is fun but especially when young but a small trailers for many is worth the investment 😊 You can save money by buying a heavy trailer but you'll need a truck that can tow heavy so you'll be paying more in gas.

Even the entry-level model can go pretty much anywhere you'd want to go truck camping. Maybe it's the smart way to go, because you're not so invested in it, you're afraid to put a scratch on it. If there's one "accessory" I wish I had during my semi-annual road-trippin' days, one of these teardrops would've been it. I'd've had to get a stronger pickup, I think, given the roads I traveled. But my camps would've been more plush, and if all I wanted was some shut-eye, hopping into bed instead of sleeping in the cab or pitching a tent would've made those trips more enjoyable. Plus I could take more stuff going and/or coming.

i gotta say that tigermoth looks super overpriced for what it is. it's also fairly heavy, 1400lbs is a lot. i've seen some of these small campers get down to 500-600lbs. In fact these Hikers are like 700lbs so far more reasonable to tow especially for that price point..

This is great! These, for the most part, are the right prices for tear drop trailers. You should never spend over 12k for these things. Also check out outbound trailers out of Nebraska. Similar price range

there is a company in FL Called WeeRoll that produces "cargo" trailers that are ready for conversion. you order the shell with the number of windows, size etc, then then insulate and wire it up for you. it's up to you how much or little you want

I just went camping with a 2008 Fleetwood Taos pop-up camper with a 4" lift and 26" tires. It has one queen-sized bed, a full-size bed, a two-burner stove, dining table, furnace, sink, and inverter. It's worth about $5k. It has all the ground clearance of these "off-road" campers and has a ton more room and features for a third of the price. It looks like with these Hiker campers, you get basically a hollow box with some shelves, windows, and a bunch of expensive add-ons that any reasonably capable person could add to a much less expensive trailer. I did the YT search for off-road RV trailers, and I get this page with trailers that are basically nothing more than small cargo trailers with a lift and some windows for three times the price. Hard fail.

@@jeanetteshawredden5643 I found another company out of Indiana that makes the square drop campers and the wait time was 8 months. Another company that makes them is the weeroll. Reasonable priced as well but the wait time is so long. Guess I'll just keep camping out of my outback. I do alot of dispersed camping anyways so not sure a camper would be a good fit for me anyways.

My appeal to these types of trailers is how minimalistic you can set them up with some nice amenities like a sink and a galley. it’s ultimately a hard tent on wheels. and being able to tow with a small car makes them great. if you want a full house on wheels then go buy an RV or bigger trailer. if you want to tent camp then tent camp. but if you want something sort of in between these are great. you also have to question at what point is it actually “camping”? is sitting at a campground with a bunch of other people around you actually camping with electricity hookups, cable tv, etc? not really but going minimalistic can still get you somewhat remote places but not too remote. my personal ideal choice would be a toyota FJ cruiser with a rooftop tent for a quick setup that can get me more remote places. however i have a subaru outback and have limited options

I like that 2nd trailer for behind a jeep. Then roof top tent on top for even more sleeping space. And because the rooftop tent is on the trailer you wouldn't need an awkward exo skeleton rack on your Jeep.

Thanks for the review, difficult to find offroad campers that are not the Rolls Royce ($20k+). Great for single (especially guys) but even couples a nice weekend getaway. Colorado trailer had toy haulers that looked rugged. Always surprised that trailers don't go wider - think they can go 8' - 8.5', thinking 8.5 x 10 is a good space. You mention a/c but what about those winter campers and heaters (electrical/propane/diesel). Love the swivel hitch that you can disconnect.
