Believe it or not, there are hills just north of the bustling metropolis of Tampa, Florida. The area is very popular with bay area cyclists, and many of the roads are a fixture of the Wednesday and Sunday morning training rides the depart from the San Antonio ballpark field. Yours truly resided once upon a time in Tampa, and used to partake in roadie group rides during the late 1990's and early 2000's.
A lot of changed since then. I quit roadie racing almost 10 years ago, and split from the Tampa Bay area around late 2004. One of the things I never did when I resided there, was to explore the area's dirt and gravelly roads. There isn't a ton of them as with other parts of the world, but what's there is very good and there are plenty of rolling hills. Granted, these aren't big hills or climbs, but enough to break the monotony of always riding a flat road.
In this episode, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew begins a 90ish mile ride out of the small and quaint town of San Antonio, Florida. The ride heads over to Zephyhills, followed by Dade City, then back towards San Antonio via the historic abbey of St. Leo, Florida. Plenty of lovely scenery and beautiful Florida towns in this video.

I enjoy your videos Jom. Keep it going. Back in the late 60's early 70's I attended USF in North Tampa. On Sundays we would drive to Pasco county to buy beer 'cause you couldn't in Hillsborough.

Good video, it was nice to see scenery and a place which is quite different from my own backyard riding. The US is way more spacious than the UK!

Three years late to this video party, but yeah, this region of Florida is uncharacteristically hilly, with frequent stretches of rolling terrain, compared to much of the state. Part of the " Brooksville Ridge " that runs up the state " spine ", from around Zephyrhills in Pasco, on the south, north past, and incl Brooksville in Hernando County, up through the northern limits of Citrus County. More of this, too, up in the panhandle from Tallahassee west thru near Crestview and north to the AL/GA state lines, except even more rugged (" the red hills " region, the locals call it). Ravines, rolling steep terrain characterized in part by clay/sandstone and limestone outcrops, esp at the " Red Rock " bluffs along the Appalachiacola River (80 - 100 ft bluffs above river level) at Torreya State Park. Other locations of similar nature, too, incl the upper reaches of the Big Shoals region of the Suwanee River (" Big Shoals " - the only stretch of class III rapids over any riverine water body in Florida).

Hi there... I did a short run of caps, they are currently out. T-shirts is all I have at this time, as you can tell, I don't push them hard. If you're interested, message me through the website, I have Medium to XL available. Thanks!

JOM great video--can almost feel the heat!. Are you using two Go Pro's--one on handlebars and the other handheld?
@GravelCyclist

Correct, two GoPro's. I have a third one I will use at races on the rear of the bike, if Covid ever goes away... mind you, my high fitness = gone haha. But I am loving riding around enjoying life.

I am guessing a bunch of them are paved. There was construction early in the video. Very sad how developers have ruined Tampa's surroundings.

@@GravelCyclist ya, lots of construction. They put in new roads. And even more people in the area make the roads more crowded.

Hi looking to get into gravel riding but confused as to gearing, would you recommend x1 or x2 chainset is there much of a difference between the obvious double amount of gear choice. I’d mainly be using on towpaths and dirt roads, nothing too steep. Thanks
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 жыл бұрын
2x crankset / chainset every time. I strongly believe a 1x setup is a horrible compromise, especially considering how good today's front derailleurs are.

Are free roaming dogs much of a problem on these types of rides? I have them in Texas and its a problem.

Dogs feature in many of my videos... seen a lot of those critters in FL, GA, SC, NC... I have no problems dealing with them being cheeky, whereas they're a problem for some riders. I understand your viewpoint, particularly if the dog is overly aggressive.
