Musicians, patrons, an architect, and a wide variety of North Philadelphia neighbors tell the story of the famed but closed Uptown Theater. An effort has been organized to revive this show place that played a critical role in the Rhythm and Blues cultural revolution of the 1950's and 60's. This film includes the last interview with famed impresario and radio personality Georgie Woods.
The Uptown Theater opened in 1928 for the Stanley Warner chain. From 1951 to 1978, the theater hosted big-name R&B and Motown acts. Leading the renovation is the Uptown Entertainment and Development Corporation (UEDC), a Community Development Corporation that was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization.
