That is awesome! He’s so knowledgeable and a great resource for jade collectors and cutters! I’m hoping to learn more about Wyoming jade specifically. Some of the material I’ve seen is incredible!

Jade was also mined in the backwoods of BIG SUR. My then boyfriend owned property that had a jade mine on it. I lived in Big Sur as well. The plot thickens as there were many “ scaly wags “, as described by my boyfriend in BIG SUR, up to no good in there efforts to acquire the huge boulders.

I love the Jade cove, its kinda dangerous, but i've pulled up some giant like 15 lb chuncks and lots of fist sized stones. The fog in the cove itself is green when the light bounces off the walls. Wheres that bolder at these days?

When the Monterey Bay mineral heard about jade, it was called Hunter-Liggget jade and was still patrolled by the army until about 1946. Then it was called Plaskett Creek jade, monterey county jade, monterey jade, jade cove jade, and lastly, and stupidly, Big Sur jade.

Carving Big Sur Jade is EXTREMELY tricky. It forms with bumps and lumps. Carve it wrong and the stone will fracture like dropping a stack of papers.

I definitely feel like Big Sur jade is still niche nowadays as I’ve only heard of it several months ago and I can definitely say it’s due to it’s very marbled pattern/lack of uniformity along with varying degree of transparency, similar to Indonesian nephrite and Washington nephrite. But that’s what I also like about it, the variety of Big Sur jade and how it almost always comes in pebbles and small boulders means every piece you acquire has some sort of unique identity and I can collect them without breaking the bank unlike the ones coming from Siberia and China where those have a very high price point and sets the standards for what a quality nephrite should be.

Strongly agree! I really appreciate the uniqueness of each piece of Big Sur Jade. I get a ton of compliments on my earrings, and I always tell people that Justin actually pulled that jade out of the ocean and carved it into earrings - which people find really exciting! I love jewelry with a story.

Just Aquired it and I know the owner collected it when he live their long ago. can’t image how long it took to collect so much but he did.

So Big Sur Jade its not gem quality?
@JewelsoftheTrade
@JewelsoftheTrade 3 ай бұрын
Big Sur Jade is an art medium and material for carving. While it is used in jewelry, it’s not considered “gem-quality” jade according to retail jewelry standards. It’s still a fabulous stone with a unique story and culture!

Big Sur jade is nice, but too many freaks on it. Its now so over priced its ridiculous. Ironically, as jades go, the color and quality of it is mediocre.

Seriously @blazingshackles why do you feel the need to talk smack about the jades people are discussing. You did the same thing about Fresh Water Jades product at the Tucson Kino show. These folks are trying to make money doing what they love, why do anything to discourage people from supporting them. Be respectful of others.

Big Sur is 30 miles away. It is beyond stupid to refer to jade cove jade as Big Sur jade!

Jade Cove is such a tiny, very specific location. More often than not, the sign at the highway has been removed. Consider Big Sur as a general reference point.
