Presentation by musician Ali Akbar Moradi at Stanford University on May 4, 2018. He discusses the history and culture of the tanbour and three different kinds of maqams used with the instrument.
Moradi is an acclaimed Iranian musician. He is a master tanbour (Persian lute) player and expert in the history and form of the instrument. He began playing the tanbour at the age of seven and learned not only the music but the Kurdish maqam repertoire. He has won awards, recorded several albums, and performed in Europe, the United States, and Canada with singers like Shahram Nazeri and at the Royal Festival Hall in London. In addition to teaching the tanbour in Tehran and his hometown of Kermanshah, Ali Akbar is a dedicated scholar of the tanbour and continues to develop the legacy of the instrument and the regional Kurdish music. Part of the Stanford Festival of Iranian Arts.

There are two Iranian Tanbur instruments both of which are Persian in origin, one is Tanbur Khorasan and the other is Tanbur Tisfûn. "Tisfun" was the Iranian capital city of the Persian Empire (Iranshahr) and Khorasan is a great and ancient Persian province. The tanbur that the Yarsan Kurds use for their music is the Persian Tisfun tanbur which the Pan-Kurds falsely call the "Kurdish Tanbur" because Yarsan Kurds play it for their folk and religious music. The Tisfun tanbur is a Persian instrument that was later on used by Yazdan Kurds in Kermanshah Province in Iran, but it did not originate there. However, in Iran it's used by all Iranians not just the Yarsan Kurds, although the Yarsan Kurds have made the Tisfun Tanbur their main ethnic instrument.

Lol the Kurds call one single thing Kurdish and the persian nationalist is quick to fly in with some ridiculous bill crap. The Tembur is one hundred percent Kurdish. It’s not only played by Yarsans it’s played by Yezidis and Alevis both Kurdish ethno religious faiths. It is said that the Tembur originated in modern day Ilam thousands of years ago. The regions of Tisfun or Baghdad all the way to Ilam have had Yarsani populations historically. Even tribes in Lorestan. As for Khorasan there are both Kurmanji, Mukriani and Laki Kurds who have held the gates of Turkic invasion. There is no such thing as Persian. You don’t even know what Persian means no once calls themselves Persians in Iran. It is stupid.
