I learned this stuff from old timers who are mostly gone now and wanted to fossilize it somewhere.

This YT algorithm really knows too much man. I’m from eastern Carolina (Beaufort, NC) and didn’t know this history behind the demise of CP&L as it was before my time, but my grandfather used to refer to paying his bills as “giving all his money away to CP&L” and I never knew what it meant. Oddly enough nuclear power plants are fascinating lowkey. Good video.

Thanks glad you liked it and I'm not shocked he would say that. In the final era CP&L wasn't getting great publicity. I remember a buddy of mine who ran the boilers out at the tire plant in Wilson used to tell me the guys out there still blamed Shearon Harris for their power bills. I've heard the CP&L rate increases of that era blamed for the eastern part of the state no being more industrialized. And another thing I didn't mention, in the late 80s, CP&L went to court for the ability to charge the ratepayers for the abandoned units 2-4 (about $300 million) and got it. That was the largest decision of its kind, at least at the time.

I worked at Sheraton Harris from 82 to 84. I worked in containment. (Reactor Building) and I also worked in the Safety department. We were told that the unbuilt 3 reactors were not built because Those other 3 belonged to other power companies that you didn't mention. They were from other states. Vepco being one and South Carolina couldn't get the financial funds. And yes there was stuff found to be buried in the concrete. But it was busted out and repoured. But that is nowhere near the worst thing. One morning on my way into brass ally I stopped to get my brass. You have to have that round 1" piece of brass on you to check out tools to get your paycheck amongst other things. When I went through undercover cops were arresting employees as they came out of brass ally. It was in the News&Observer and on the news. When it first opened one of the NRC guys told me that it was only going to be licensed to operate on 4% capacity. I could go on and on with stories.

I’m thinking about buying property 8 miles from this plant. Do you think it’s safe to live around there? Great video BTW.

Yeah it's a safe plant I wouldn't be worried about being near it. It's a good area.

I work at a PWR in Illinois and I’m looking into moving to one of the Duke plants, I’m between McGuire and Harris. Any recommendations?

I worked at both McGuire and Harris. Did a few years at each. Really liked working at McGuire.

Charlotte and Raleigh are both nice. Both are desirable and have seen a lot of growth and property value rise. Raleigh is smaller and is more or less a state funded program. Charlotte was historically the more industrial of the two. Charlotte has nicer landscape being near the mountains. I liked Charlotte better, I was never wild about Raleigh. Both plants are easily commutable to nice suburbs. Harris is 15 mins to Cary which is a relatively nice suburb of raleigh. The country people who work at Harris live in Sanford. McGuire is in huntersville, which itself is a very nice suburb of Charlotte on lake Norman. I really liked living in Huntersville. Or if you want to be out in the country you can live in Lincolnton.
