Currently deployed here in Al Rayyan municipality, of Al Udeid, Air Base Qatar- 379EMXS WHEEL AND TIRE / TRANSIENT ALERT CREW CHIEF I'M 2A551D (C-17 CREW CHIEF) by trade but support the civilians here. Love the area and locals as well as food. I would not mind living here at all really. The sad thing about this base here is that they don't teach the history or show appreciation for the efforts and victories achieved in this strategic location.... When I arrived here i asked about the K, no one knew what the hell it was for. I looked and looked but no one ever seemed to know the full story. Thank you for sharing and posting this I wish they played this in the dining facility on their TVs it would help with the ignorance i see. It would help with people talking so much crap all the time on this base.

In WWII, the 379th wasn't the first B-17 group to enter service, but it racked up the most distinctions as the narrator states. However, she missed an important one: the 379th logged more combat mission over Europe than any other heavy bomber group (there were forty or so).

Nice to know that the unit is still going - I do wish a lot more people who study history actually knew about the 379th & some of it's more famous B.17's such as "Swamp Fire" & also Charlie Brown & Franz Stiegler incident regarding "Ye Old Pub" & lastly about the legendary "Ol' Gappy" who flew 157 missions, making HER the Top scoring B.17 of WW.2 Such a crying shame she survived all the way to early 1947 in the heat of the Arizona sun, thankfully just in time to be seen by a "Life" magazine photographer who had the precsence of mind to photograph her, in all her glory (minus engines) before she was stupidly scrapped & melted down (essentialy) into aluminium ingots (she should've been saved) It's because of 'Her' that I took such an interest in the 379th Also ironic, as my Son & his girl went to buy a house at the neighbouring village !! (& we live nowhere nearby !)

Any information on my grandfather's plane, Scotch and soda? Or scotch n soda. Edward R B urke second lieutenant, pilot. 525th bomb squadron. His navigator Leonard tew was unfortunately killed next to him by flak But my grandfather still managed to land the plane with the rest of the crew. He had a few crazy stories like that to say the least, wish I picked his brain more. I did quite a bit though. I have two different tail numbers, the records might be mixed up. I would have to go back into the personal documents my family has to find out exactly which tail number but I have two, one of which is likely his correct one.

@@robstaaass = Remember I'm an 'outsider' as such, but, clearly an 8th A.F "fan" since the late 1960's Are you either Dan Stasiukiewicz, related, or know him (?) - Either way, some interesting news** I've seen a sharp image-photo' of your Grandad AND two images of his actual Boeing B.17-G Don't wanna put words in your mouth (laughs) so I'll let YOU tell me the '17's serial number (please) You Yanks (understandably) call it a 'Tail number' (BTW, so do I) - but it's "serial number" officially I've got 'the low down' on it & it's eventual fate & once you pass over those two 'serial numbers' you have, we'll see if they tally up (match) **Of course I'm assuming you already know this AND (perchance?) have already seen those 3 images ???? If not, then obviously you'll be very pleased - (I know I would be, too) Always keen to help anyone interested in the 8th Air Force , fairly local to me... If it's the correct one, then I've also got it's "Fuselage Sqdn Codes" too - (which is amazing !!) The details I have are for a B.17-G in N.M.F - We'll presume this is THE one Len Tew WAS killed in Get back to me "if" ya like, via here. Can you PLEASE give me the TWO serial numbers (tail numbers) you have please (?) = Cheers !! Thanks.

I also feel honored and fortunate to have people like you who truly understand and respect such things to this day, as the mighty 8th. It's awesome
