I really enjoyed going to this store as a kid. I was too young by the time they went out of business to truly appreciate it in the moment, but it was always so fun to wander around the Christmas isles and look at all the pretty decorations :). Thanks for further helping articulate the memory of this historic store.

Ames will be opening a few stores in a few states this spring 2023. Very surprised and glad. Competition is good

Ironically, mammoth mart had a similar kickoff, using the former "mammoth mills" building along with the sign. They carried a product line even more tacky than ames, which probably contributed to their demise. Lechmere was another that tried to get too big too fast. They were never a price leader, but had a really wide selection of brands.

Better than Bright Sun Films' video. I loved how you clarified WHY Ames went out of business.

@@PostMortar It was a healthy helping of it I'm sure. This is definitely something that's inspiring me at this point. The way you structure your videos is also an underrated aspect of your craft. You're KZfaq's best kept secret!

The turning point was 1991. That was the year the first Walmart entered New England, specifically Seabrook, NH. Sam Walton had a gentleman's agreement with the founder of Ann and Hope to never enter his territory. After he died, Walmart entered the Northeast and life was never the same. One by one, regional retailers Ames, Bradlee's, Lechmere, Building 19, and Caldor went under.

Agreed. Very sad. Part of Rob Walton’s unsavory leadership of Walmart, along with the big push to cheap Chinese made goods. Sam would be very disappointed.

A company with a theft problem buying Zayre is fitting. Being kids at the the time, my sibling and I enjoyed going to Zayre because we never had to buy any toys. Somebody else had always already opened at least one of everything and we could just play with the toys right there, for free. We never took anything. But loss prevention used to clumsily follow us all around the store, always peering over end shelves or something, watching us like hawks. We never did a thing wrong, but apparently they never saw the people who opened all the packages and cartons and thew the contents all over the place. They were darn sure some honest kids were up to no good, though. That's Zayre in a nutshell: WAY too worried about the wrong things while ignoring their actual problems. Ames was the same. BJs sure carries the old Zayre DNA. Even before my family knew the company was related, at least one of us remarked how it reminded of Zayre in some ways.
