In today's video, we will be discussing the history of anthropology. The road to modern anthropology is not a pretty one. Through colonialism, racism, ethnocentrism, evolutionism, and more, we see many missteps in the history of this field. Watch as I uncover the trials and tribulations of anthropology as well as how it has grown into the field it is today.
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am a recent UCLA Anthropology graduate on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

Finally the video I’ve been waiting for months! I hope this evolves into a series as 9 minutes is obviously not enough to do justice to more then a century of history

Thanks so much, Alivia. I didn't expect you to start with Herodotus, but it makes sense. His observations and reports on Persians, Egyptians, Scythians were important beginnings. One could also include traveler's accounts, like Marco Polo, et al., and those of the European "Age of Exploration", and some Christian missionaries who were not simply bent on eradication of heathen ways, but were careful observers and recorders of tribal cultures. I've been reading Charles King's book, "Gods of the Upper Air.", an account of the development of anthropology in America which includes fascinating accounts of Boas, Mead, Benedict, Zora Neale Hurston, etc., and their radical ideas on cultural relativity, race, sex and gender, against the then popular racist ideas of eugenics.

i love love love anthropology but i think there’s a big tendency to exotify cultures both through anthropology and more specifically. Id like to hear more about racism and exotification in anthropological fields because unfortunately i still think it pretty prevalent, also about how to avoid it.

I haven't watched the whole video but I feel as though a lot of fields in Academia are hyper focused on diversity inclusivity and equity and it's affecting the quality of education nowadays and trust me I'm all about being sensitive about traumas and shit and understanding the effect colonialism has had on society but ever since going to university I've been really disheartened buy the way anthropology is taught and that goes my other classes as well and not just because of the DEI policies. But over all academia is weird asf and would like to know how you feel about the state of education and competition in university. Obviously this is too much for the comments section butt I would love to talk more about anthro and Academia when you get a chance

I think that evolutionism as you call it is still very prevalent today. Most people still think history is walking towards a direction and we’ll one day reach the “end of history”. 9/11 2016 and more recently the Ukraine War seemed to have shaken this idea but many people still see Islamic terrorism Trump’s election brexit and Putin’s imperialism as obstacles to progress that will one day be removed in the eternal march to “the end of history” rather then their own historical events which can and have altered the course of history
