Representation is important. Storyteller and screenwriter, Daniellé Dash (@danielledash) takes us through the history of Black British representation on British TV, both in-front-of and behind the camera. We start in 1956, where groundbreaking docudrama, Man From the Sun, featured the first black actors to be featured regularly on the UK small screen, and go right up to the shows and black creators changing the game today.

Irony is there were more black shows in Britain in primetime in the 1990s than now. Since 2000 black led shows disappeared from mainstream British TV. The TV license Tax went up and but no discount for black people due to the lack of black content. Taxation without representation. Some people say this happened when British channels starting outsourcing programme content to independent TV production companies who didn't see having diverse characters as a priority, black people and black shows disappeared from British TV overnight, leading to a wave of black British actors heading to Hollywood for work because they couldn't get jobs in the UK. But you could get white comedians in blackface being 'ironically' racist on mainstream TV in the 2000s

Some of the best comedy writers in the US worked on Good Times, so when it was remade in the UK as The Fosters, that was probably the funniest show on UK television. I'm surprised it didn't last longer.

Lenny Henry,Joseph Marcell and many other Black Brits are loved over more in the States. I wish they would have broadcast their old shows over here at the same time as American television schedule. Widows the original series would have been well received by the American audiences because doing that time MIami Vice and other shows with black people were starting becoming popular and the norm. Please Britain , bring those shows to the US and Canada

It's like when get out was released with a black British lead and ppl like Samuel l Jackson made insensitive comment that we don't understand or get racsim in our country. He used the worst example of this by saying it was never illegal to marry a white, ignoring the stigma, abuse and the fact they ppl white who married blacks got ostriciszed from their communities. This country may have been better in the treatment of ppl like us but we its still not taught in our schools. Back in secondary I only ever learnt about the slave trade and American racism, whilst ignoring the prejudice that both me and my brother got in a school with 2000 students 5 of which were black

EastEnders, to their credit, had recurring back families since their inception in 1985. Corrie, on the other hand, was so backwards, they had one black character per decade, if that even. Shirley Armitage all of 10 episodes in the 80s, light skinned Fiona Middleton in the 90s and that's it.

It's tapped that in the US although it's more blatantly racist as far as TV opportunities for Black People it's in abundance although there are the few token gatekeepers that always gets and gives certain roles but in Britain opportunities for Black People are rare. But racism has been overt. Never the less and always the moor it's great to see Black People especially in Britain tell their stories and create opportunities...facts or facts?

there is no such thing as "black British history", it's just as ridiculous as saying "white bantu history". the indigenous British people are a white europoid people. this need for black people to co-opt someone else's history and nation in order to assuage their own racial inferiority complex is beyond insulting and tiresome.
