Great work! Cambodia is one of the countries that I have yet to study in depth. This video definitely increased my interest in Cambodian history.

As a Burmese, I have respect for Cambodia as a whole, because of Khmer Empire, yet sad to see their current state and how China is using them for its imperialism. I understand why Cambodians don't like Vietnam and Thailand, but let's be fair, they need to stop believing that China will do anything in favour of Cambodians. China itself backed Pol Pot, have they learned from it?

Chao Fa Ngum was not a warlord. He was a prince who later founded Kingdom of Lan Xang by uniting many different Tai ethnic groups in what is now Laos and part of Northern and Eastern Thailand.

FUNAN: The First Kingdom in Cambodian History #Funan (Khmer: Nokor Phnom, នគរភ្នំ, lit. "Mountain Kingdom") was the name given by Chinese cartographers, geographers and writers to an ancient Indianised state-or, rather a loose network of states (Mandala)-located in mainland Southeast Asia centered on the Mekong Delta that existed from the first to sixth century CE. The name is found in Chinese historical texts describing the kingdom, and the most extensive descriptions are largely based on the report of two Chinese diplomats, Kang Tai and Zhu Ying, representing the Wu Kingdom who sojourned in Funan in the mid-3rd century AD. Funan is known in the modern languages of the region as វ្នំ Vnom (Old Khmer) or នគរភ្នំ Nokor Phnom (Khmer, however, the name Funan is not found in any texts of local origin from the period, and it is not known what name the people of Funan gave to their polity. Some scholars argued that ancient Chinese scholars transcribed the word Funan from a word related to the Khmer word bnaṃ or vnaṃ (modern: phnoṃ, meaning "mountain"), others however thought that Funan may not be a transcription at all- rather it meant what it says in Chinese. Like the very name of the kingdom, the ethno-linguistic nature of the people is the subject of much discussion among specialists. The leading hypotheses are that the Funanese were mostly Mon-Khmer, or that they were mostly Austronesian, or that they constituted a multi-ethnic society. The available evidence is inconclusive on this issue. Michael Vickery has said that, even though identification of the language of Funan is not possible, the evidence strongly suggests that the population was Khmer. The results of archaeology at Oc Eo have demonstrated "no true discontinuity between Oc Eo and pre-Angkorian levels", indicating Khmer linguistic dominance in the area under Funan control. Based on the testimony of the Chinese historians, the polity Funan is believed to have been established in the 1st century CE in the Mekong Delta, but archaeological research has shown that extensive human settlement in the region may have gone back as far as the 4th century BCE. Though regarded by Chinese authors as a single unified polity, some modern scholars suspect that Funan may have been a collection of city-states that sometimes were at war with one another and at other times constituted a political unity. From archaeological evidence, which includes Roman, Chinese, and Indian goods excavated at the ancient mercantile centre of Óc Eo (from the Khmer អូរកែវ Ou Kaeo, meaning "glass canal") in southern Vietnam, it is known that Funan must have been a powerful trading state. Excavations at Angkor Borei in southern Cambodia have likewise delivered evidence of an important settlement. Since Óc Eo was linked to a port on the coast and to Angkor Borei by a system of canals, it is possible that all of these locations together constituted the heartland of Funan. In the mid 6th century, Funan was in decline then was attacked & subdued by its former vassal, the norther Khmer polity of Chenla lead by King Bhavavarman I (thought to be the grandson of the king of Funan) and his close relative Chitrasena (royal title: Mahendravarman). Rudravarman was the last king of Funan, as mentioned by the Chinese annals. By early 7th century or during the reign of Isanavarman I of Chenla, Funan was completely disappeared from the Chinese records. "Cambodia" is never known in Khmer language its just English word derive from French call . We call our self Kampuchea or Khmer .

Funan was a united kingdom from different tribes alongside the coastline of mainland southeast asia. The majority population of Funan possibly were from two groups of people they were Austronesian people and Austroasiatic people. Because today modern Cambodian who live the southern Cambodia where the Funan located shared very similar to Austronesian people DNA. Those might been the people of Champa.

The only one of the Four brothers (Champa, Mon, Java) who left or survived from the new kingdoms. If we come to Southeast Asia to study its root or civilizations you must be pass these 4 brothers. Any I am a Cham descent a part of Austronesian.

From what I see, Most of Khmer empire fall into Thai’s and Lao’s. Viet people save millions of Cambodian from Khmer Rouge. Why should we hate each other? If we become friends, we can grow stronger together.

I think the fall of Khmer Empire was the fault of the Cambodians themselves. They had more land, but fewer people. And then, they lavishly wasted money building temples rather than ever looking at improving infrastructures. This led to their demise and ultimately Cambodia's tragedy. If anyone blaming me that I read Thai or Vietnamese propaganda, then please, I'm from Poland - but I know Khmer Empire is always a joke.
