I was 16 in that golden year of OSDM 1991 just gobbling up everything that hit the shelves. Sweden had something special going on for sure. All hail the buzzsaw!

I think there's one very important band (Or person). Dan Swanö/Edge Of Sanity, he's a forefather to most progressive death from sweden, Opeth, Katatonia etc etc. He's also one of the most important producers in terms of heavy music.

Slaughter of the Soul made me fall in love with death metal. Can’t say enough good things about the Jester Race and Whoracle. Maybe cover Edge of Sanity and Dan Swano and his impact on the Swedish scene soon?

Thank you for this video!! A million years ago, I came across a copy of a CD entitled "Metal Militia - A tribute to Metallica", it is an understatement to say the final two songs changed my musical taste forever: Eye Of The Beholder (In Flames) & My Friend Of Misery (Dark Tranquility). Dark Tranquillity has been ever since my absolute favorite band, I will be seeing them live for like the 10th time when they play in Guadalajara, Mx, next April 14th. Personally, it would be 2 - Jester Race / 1 - Gallery, but I fully agree. We can trace back all the great current Death Melodeath, Technical Death, Progressive Death, etc etc bands back to what At The Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity did in the early 90s.

Give the album "Handful of Nothing" by Ebony Tears an honest listen. If there was a Gothenburg style album to rival the bleak intensity of Slaughter of the Soul, that would be it

This was an excellent breakdown of the Swedish death metal scene. You provide a lot of context that most Americans like myself probably didn’t have growing up across the pond so to speak. My ONLY criticism is that you didn’t mention Arch Enemy, a band so incredibly influential for me along with In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Their first three albums with Johan Liiva were amazing, Chris Amott’s brilliant solos… I could go on. Great video though!

Slaughter of the Soul (AtG) and Whoracle (In Flames) were by far the most influential albums from the gothenburg scene for me, The Chainheart machine (Soilwork) was also a huge album for me. I think that the gothenburg scene was the best evolutionary step in metal music by far.

The lack of mention of Edge of Sanity, or Dan Swanö at all, despite being arguably the biggest influence on the Swedish scene is crazy
@disembodiedspirits

Edge of Sanity was nowhere NEAR the biggest influence on the Swedish scene. They got some traction a few years later, especially Dan as a producer, but by then the scene was already well established.

I found them. Enjoyable and informative. I've only been online for about two years, and I'm starting to take youtube for granted already, the amazing amount of cool music and history on here has revolutionized being a heavy metal fan. Kind of Ironic whereas it's not as exciting as the heyday ( maybe it is and it's just subjective to the age of the fan?) But I'm real impressed with the oldschool legacy cats and the genuinely good material still being produced and released.

A question about it...don't you think that the band discharge..was a proto death metal band before venom that influenced the swedish scene? I mean discharge influenced crust punk , d-beat and hardcore in general but they also influenced thrash , grindcore and black..( extreme metal in general)don't you think also death metal?
@theheaviestshow
@theheaviestshow Жыл бұрын
Great idea!!! Discharge was definitely huge for the Swedish scene, but the Americans in general were less influenced by the European punk scene and more influenced by what was happening in their own sphere. I could be wrong, but I think that's what my research has led me to believe.
