The History of Disney's Cancelled Discovery Bay

At Imagineering they say that good ideas should never die. Whilst projects may be shelved, delayed or ultimately cancelled, strong ideas within these projects may pop up again in unexpected places. No other project could be more of a testament to this philosophy than Discovery Bay, Disney’s most ambitious, highly themed and ultimately never built land that through it’s own strength managed to build itself.

Discovery Bay is often though of as a canceled/forgotten land, but this video made me realize just how far it's influence reached. It was going to just be a Disneyland area, but it went on to be basically realized as the french equivalent of Tomorrowland, influence a iconic pavilion at Epcot, influence the style of a whole entire park over at DisneySea, and influence the concept of S.E.A, which links all the Disney parks together. For a land that was never officially built, it basically set the tone for almost every original concept Disney has done since

makes me sad bc now theres not even a possibility of getting a new land in disney bc star wars land took that spot and its just so out of place to me no other land in the park is based on a film why did they have to do this i miss the originality and cleverness disney had you can tell the new stuff just isnt made by the same imagineers theres no feeling and the quality just feels so different nothing to do about it now but its just a shame :\

Exceptional video. I remember being fascinated by the model of Discovery Bay inside the Disney Gallery that once occupied the current Disney Dream Suite atop Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland in Anaheim. There, they had artist renderings of attractions that included a time travel boat ride taking you to the age of the dinosaurs, in addition to the Dumbo's circus concept, too. Thanks for sharing with us the history of the land that got away.

Kind of sad to me that everything now has to be based on a pre-existing IP. It is what it is I guess but Imagineers used to really work to tell a unique story on some of the attractions.

Sometimes there’s a gem here and there like Mystic Manor ride at Hong Kong Disneyland but mostly it’s just IP’s slapped onto them

I was working at Disneyland when they announced they were planning to build Discovery Bay. I saw all the renderings and was VERY excited about it. I also remember being deeply disappointed when they cancelled it.

Unfortunately the original plot of land is taken now but I think this would make a fantastic overlay of Tomorrowland! The mountain here even reminds me of the Matterhorn, and the Submarine Voyage is already there! Bringing Journey to the Centre of the Earth from DisneySea would be the cherry on top

I love how you tied this in to Galaxy's Edge. Here I was thinking this would be the only video out right now that has nothing to do with it, but nope, you found a way. ( I mean that in a good way. ) I vaguely recall some concept art maps that showed Discovery Bay behind Big Thunder where the BBQ used to be but your info showed it right where Galaxy's Edge is. It puts a little perspective on a current issue. Nicely done.

Build it now. Start with the 20,000 League Ride and the Journey to the Center of the Earth rides from Japan Disney Seas. And maybe Mystic Manor . Tie that in with the Professor Marvel.

Isn't Frontierland in Paris based on the original concept of the mining town collapsing? I've heard that that's why the phantom manor is differently themed. When I went in late 2017 I noticed that the haunted mansion ride wasn't in a New Orleans Square like in U.S Disney parks and I think they used a storyline about an old mining town that caved in and everyone died (similar to what you explained for the original design of combining discovery bay into the park) to justify placing the ride in Frontierland.

Yeah, Frontierland in Disneyland Paris is about the story of "Thunder Mesa Mining" and how Henry Ravenswood struck gold in the Mountains of Big Thunder until an earthquake hit caving in the gold mines causing countless deaths. This storyline is continued in the park through their Big Thunder, Phantom Manor and the land itself. It's a great mix of ideas from the unbuilt Western River Expedition and Discovery Bays backstory. It makes for an incredibly well-themed land for sure! - Luke

Love the channel! It's nice to see that you're getting more popular. Will you be doing any more Aussie park videos? I think a Dreamworld video (either history or a review) would be pretty interesting.

I am a huge Star Wars fan, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the two attractions, but I feel like Discovery Bay would’ve been a better fit for Disneyland. Tony Baxter’s concept had more than just two attractions, and it wasn’t a land based on a SINGULAR IP. I feel that a land that has multiple attractions that are kind of their own IP is a better fit for Disneyland. I understand having a land based on Mickey and friends in Toontown because he’s the mascot of Disney and is getting his own ride put in there, and I understand that Disney is using their Star Wars IP that they purchased in 2012 to compete with Universal’s Harry Potter attractions, but the rest of the lands at Disneyland have very unique attractions. I feel that Disney missed out big on not trying to make Discovery Bay come to fruition. I feel that Disneyland park is lacking of a lot of that original Walt Disney spirit that was present day one. This concept to me had a lot of good character that would’ve kept that spirit. It reminds me a lot of what they’ve done at Tokyo Disneysea, which I wish that imagineering could’ve done some of that kind of stuff here in Anaheim. I grew up as an Orange County local who got to go to Disneyland very frequently, but I feel that the park hasn’t really grown much even with the addition of Galaxy’s Edge. Even being a Star Wars fan, mainly a original trilogy fan, but I feel that Disney should’ve gone with Baxter’s idea when he pitched it. It’s just sad that the Imagination Pavilion in Epcot has been changed to the stupid Imagination Institute and threw out any remnants of Baxter’s original concept!
